Coaching openings

How about TCU? Had a completely dreadful year, 6-21 and 2-15.

Yeah, that’s an interesting situation as Raegan Pebley looked like she righted the ship a mere 2 years ago yet here we are. She’s been there 8 years already and Her contract expires next year so depending on the buyout and of course her recruits coming in, the AD has an interesting decision to make- let it ride for a year, buy her out or extend her if he believes in her. To me, might be time to move on….

Delaney-Smith at Harvard is retiring this year. She's been there for 40 years I think.

Wow, kinda unusual to announce it while the hired coach is still finishing his season with another team.

I received an email announcement from MSU athletics. I'm assuming militarydog received the same one.
Just saw it on Twitter too. Wow. They wasted no time getting the news out there. Makes sense though with AAU season about to start up.

So, watching the MAC Final, Coach Leggette-Jack seemed to have a great relationship with her players. Buffalo will have a solid core coming back for next season. I know there's speculation she might apply for the Syracuse opening...but she has done well at Buffalo.

I’ll be interested to see what he does right away. Louisville employs a Hunger Games style of recruiting. They bring in the best talent possible each year and let them fight it out. With the transfer portal and the available slots Mississippi State could look completely different next season. However based on Louisville’s style of play Anastasia Hayes and J Jordan are prototype Louisville lead guards. D Powe is a prototype wing and D Carter is a prototype power forward. All are hard nosed physical players with one on one skills. Louisville couldn’t care less about seniors versus freshmen. The players that help win play.

I just saw the email. Jury will be out on this one. I get the appeal but we shall see.
Dumb, we just lost a real chance to recover from the last stupid hire. I know absolute nothing about Purcell but Coach Novak had the players and fans behind him, I look for lots of transfers again, what does it take for Cohen to be replaced!

I think nailing the correct hire is more important in the long term than keeping a coach for the sake of keeping many of the current players. If players transfer, let the cards fall where they may.

No offense to Coach Novak who did a good job in the situation he dealt with. I don't see anything that in his past and this one season alone that screams he needs to be the HC...

With that said I have zero clue how this new hire will turn out.

In fairness if you know absolutely nothing about Coach Purcell how are you ready to say it was dumb? I also thought Coach Novak did an outstanding job but at the end of the day this is the hire that was made and I want to know more about him before I &form an opinion.

We all knew we were gonna hire NMP Part 2

Curious why the skepticism about Purcell. He was considered a top HC coach prospect by some in the media.

He seems well respected, is considered to be a top recruiter and has helped develop the talent at Louisville. Wouldn't that, along with being from the state be good for MSU?

Mississippi State has hired Louisville associate coach Sam Purcell.

Saw him last week and was thinking to myself that he has been on the sidelines for awhile, and wondered if he had interviewed to get an head coaching position anywhere.

He is from Georgia. Hope he recruits as advertised and brings in a low post coach.

I say it dumb because I thought Novak had won over both the fans and the players. The players indicated they wanted Novak to be their coach, it took Vic years to develop that support, NMK 1 year to destroy that support and Novak less than a year to start to rebuild the support. Purcell starts behind the eight ball, he has to win over a fan base that wanted to keep Novak and players who loved Novak. My concern is given the ease of entering the transfer portal, the players will resent their desires were discarded. I suspect some team will hire Novak and we will lose a number of our key possible returnees to other teams, especially the team that hires Novak. I just do not see hiring outside when your answer seems to be right before your eyes.

Very fair point.

I'm excited to see what Purcell can do. I thought Novak did an admirable job considering the circumstances, but I don't think he did anything to earn the head coaching job. I would feel differently if he had gotten to the tournament, but, in light of him not getting to the tourney, I'd rather go with someone that has recruiting ties in women's basketball and has spent time at the P5 level at a winning program.

IMO, some of our fans have unrealistic expectations about who we could hire. Some really liked Novak, which I understand because he took over a bad situation and made the team fun to watch again. But I ultimately don't think he did enough to earn the head coaching job, and he has no recruiting ties in women's basketball.

I have realistic expectations. I'm just saying I know what we like to do as a school.

Recruiting is much easier if you win and I thought we had a great chance to be top 3 in the SEC if we retained Novak, Myah, Anne, Both Carters, Jordon, the Michigan State transfer, and the rest of the team eligible to return. Now, my fear is wherever Novak goes (TA&M is a team I believe will look hard at Novak) at least two or three of our expected returners will follow. I do not think MSST could attract an elite coach and all I know about Purcell is he is an assistant at Louisville. I believe you reduce risk by hiring from within whenever possible because at least you know what you are getting.

Per the Louisville Coaching Staff/Mississippi State hire, a few points/questions:

- I first saw this headline as "Louisville Asst. Coach..." and thought Stephanie Norman was getting a shot at lead chair. Nope. Louisville posters/fans: does she harbor Head Coaching aspirations? Or is she settling into a Chris Dailey kind of role? Or did have MSU have specific reasons they wanted the associate coach, Sam Purcell?

- As for Purcell, his Louisville bio spends lots of time on player development, particularly with guards. Heck, he could work with an entire family of 'em ;)! His Georgia background is noted and wondered if he had input on any/several of the Cardinals from that region?

- Well, two interim situations in the SEC are now done with MSU and Florida. Next?

Stephanie Norman has, of course, not said anything publicly but the consensus opinion here in Louisville is that she is content where she is. She and Purcell are the two lead recruiters, and she and Purcell share the scouting and game planning duties.

Purcell was the lead recruiter for Georgia native Asia Durr and also recruited Myisha Hines-Allen and Sam Fuehring.
