Christyn Williams and Olivia Nelson-Ododa to play in Pan-Am Games 3X3

The US in a tight one with Venezuela. The Oregon players making all the plays. Christyn can't make a shot and ONO missed two short jumpers and just accidentally floored a girl with an elbow.

Americans pull away late to win 18-14 as CW makes a two and ONO gets a putback and foul for a 2-point play.

ONO still doing a lot of tangling/jostling with her arms that is going to get her fouled out real quick in college.

Why wait. Just put Ionescu on the Senior National Team. Like stewie.

Glad to see ONO actually take a short jumper. Would have been nice to have made one but at least she took the open shot. CW finally made a shot and at a time when it was needed.

ONO's gotten away with about 10 fouls early in this game against the Dominicans. She's not doing work with her body, probably because she's not strong enough, so she uses her arms and does a ton of pushing and flailing. At least she's competing but that has to be addressed.

Wow, Ionescu just got intentionally elbowed in the head after grabbing the ball from a player in a dead-ball situation. That would've been an easy ejection in almost any other setting.

Game is physical.

CW just hit a two to get US close to 21.

.-.
Best game for CW by far. No surprise it happened in a game that looked more like rugby. CW was pissed. :D

These games look like wrestling matches. Almost any contact goes.

US steamrolls 21-7 with almost three minutes left to play.
How is the competition? Is it not quite as good as the World Tour stops Christyn was participating in? I'm sure this is a better team with Hebard and Ionescu though.

They won this game with defense. The DR stalled at 6 points for what seemed like forever.

For only about 7 minutes of play, there were a heckuva lot of fouls. Olivia will foul out in the 1st quarter if she keeps defending like that. The DR "big" (who was outsized by both Olivia and Hebard) finished with about 8 fouls of her own.

The DR “Big” shoves Hebard hard a few times. One was after the whistle was blown she shoved her against the post hard. Can’t believe she wasn’t ejected.

Here's the thing- it's two UConn sophomores who combined have had basically one game where they've carried the offense (Williams vs. the Domers) compared with two Oregon seniors who have been setting triple-doubles and most-consecutive-FGs-without-a-miss records for the past three seasons

So Ionescu and Hebard have been setting records for three years which means they started setting records when they were sophomores. But Olivia and Christyn are not setting records as sophomores. Well at least not good records. This is what you said. Right?

Well, they're not college sophomores yet, so we've got until April of 2020 to see what kinds of records they might set their sophomore year. And the Williams who singlehandedly laid the smackdown on the Domers in South Bend is capable of great things. My point was just that CW and ONO will inevitably look a bit pedestrian next to two players who have amazing chemistry, 3 years of established work together, and a history of being exceptional at the kind of plays that 3x3 is all about.

ETA: Also, would it kill FIBA to call Hebard by her proper name, Ruthy? "Ruth Hebard" sounds like a long lost Golden Girl.

Ha I liked how the Spanish (as in from Spain) commentator on espn3 called them all by their last name except ONO, whom he unfailingly called "Olivia."

Just to isolate the important schedule info .

As the No. 1 seed, the USA will meet No. 4 Brazil (2-3) in the first women’s semifinal at 10 a.m. EDT on Monday, July 29. All games are streaming live at WatchESPN.com.

The second semifinal at 10:30 a.m. EDT will feature No. 2 Argentina (4-1) versus No. 3 Dominican Republic (3-2). The semifinal winners will meet in the gold medal game at 2 p.m. EDT, and the losers will play for bronze at 1 p.m. EDT.

Also interesting that all the qiotes in the article were CW's. Her last game was her best and hope that trend continues.

US 21 - Brazil 5 in 1st semifinal. Good team effort. Ionescu closes out the game with 3 straight bombs from the arc. Hard to see how anyone beats this team in the finals.

By far the best showing from Olivia. Finished multiple times though contact and also made a 10 footer clean :D:D

Also at least 2 monster blocks and was not as out of position or off balance as in other games.

Both Liv & Christyn played more physical. Bad call on Liv when she set a crushing pick after handing off the ball to Christyn. I also liked Christyn lowering her shoulder to fling aside her defender on a right handed drive and finish at the basket.

Agree on Liv's pick but maybe Christyn should have been called on that. She really loves contact

Interesting Hebard played so few minutes but of the 4, she seemed to be the one that looked the most tired.

It was close, but I agree that Christyn could have been called. Either way, got to love Christyn flattening her defender. She’ll be a load to defend this season whenever she drives the lane.

I wonder if they plan to use Hebard more in the finals in case the DR wins since they were so physical with them before.

DR lost to Argentina. The US has better talent, but Argentina plays really well together. It should be a good final, on WatchESPN at 4:00 pm ET.

Well Argentinia won 21-8. They gave the US the most trouble in the prelims and have the best skilled players among the rest of the field and that 'spark plug' guard. We will need to earn this one.

Will ONO see play this rough this rough during the season? We'll see. I like the fact that she's developing "calluses" during this tournament. They will come in handy as she faces some of the more physical posts during the season. Though she may be slight of frame, Liv does not back down. I like that!!! She'll push, shove and grab with anyone. It's up to the referees to control how intense it gets.

Watching how Ruthy (who is one of the better posts in D-1 WCBB) plays against real game international competition doesn't hurt either. What ONO is seeing and and experiencing during these games can't be duplicated during pickup games or practice on campus.

USA won the Gold Medal over Argentian 21-17. Didn't watch the match. Watching the highlights you would think that Argentina won the Match until you see Christyn's reaction at the end of the highlights.

The reaction from Kara Lawson was amazing. She went bonkers. She was feeling the pressure to win. Props to Argentina. They played with heart and flair.
Just a little too much Sabrina / Ruthy telepathy at the end.
