BYU Post Game Thread

Fairly interesting take by the Sleepers Boys. Greg back on the UConn wagon. He takes some serious digs at the BYU system, it's lack of assist rate and all the iso ball they run. First Uconn player they note, good ol Jayden Ross.

Interesting take on Solo as well saying UConn might be better served not relying on Solo’s scoring so much. Making him fourth option.

Unlike some here, I appreciate Greg's views. He's not Red Auerbach, but the dude knows the college game and watches a ton of it. I'm 100% with him on Solo. I can see Solo's role shrinking a tad once Mullins is back.

I’ve always seen him as that guy on the wing who is ready to take a set shot from a kick-out or put up a fake and attack. Everyone will respect his three point shot.

He's not picking up fouls this way though.

Most of his foul calls are contact on drives that are 50/50 calls. The 5 fouls he had yesterday were,

1st foul was indeed a reach in on a pass

2nd foul was Ross impeding AJ’s driving lane. Wouldn't be a Big East foul but it's probably an OOC foul

3rd foul was him diving on the floor for a loose ball. He ends up with the ball but a BYU player trips over him at the same time. Wouldn't be a Big East foul.

4th foul was the backcourt turnover and reach in. Obvious bad foul

5th foul was the 50/50 call where AJ ran him over.

I'd say only 2 of these were bad reach in fouls. And none of them were while he was playing one on one defense on his man.

Third one is a foul by rule. Unfortunate call but the right one that gets made all the time.

Should we fire the coach then? Really, is that your take? (and that's sarcasm). I mean Hurley had the team ready to play. He handled himself great with the officials last night and was terrific in the postgame. He wasn't a maniac or anything like that. I think this is what happens when you play a quality team early who clearly has the best player on the floor. Dybantsa played like the top pick in the draft 2nd half. UConn was in a ton of foul trouble and as much as you want to get on Hurley for that, do you honestly think he wants guys picking up dumb fouls and doesn't try to coach that out of them? A few of those calls were mysterious (the Stewart foul on the fadeaway did not look like a foul and it seems that Ross fouled out on what would be called a charge against most player other than Dybantsa). I thought BYU was allowed to play a bit more physically than UConn 2nd half, but I don't think that was Hurley's fault at all. I recall this forum's reaction to the UNC win during the 2nd National Championship season with some people killing this team for a close game after the Kansas loss, or the reaction after losing 6-8 during the 1st National Championship season. Hurley "righted the ship" both times. I think we owe him a lot of latitude especially early the season playing without his own 5 star recruit. For my money, he is still the best coach in college basketball, and I am glad he is here.
should we fire the coach? Forgive me, but that is an incredible reach based on what I wrote. I hate to bring up facts: 1. Hurley himself admitted that we stopped attacking. This fact was obvious to anyone who watched the game. 2. Objectively speaking, this is now game #5 where we are fouling at an insane rate. If all we do is foul less this game is not close. We are giving our opponents too many freebies. 3. We all can agree that this game could have been won by 20. Instead we barely hung on. This happened. And it is not okay. and 4. What is the matter with some of you that think so little of coach Hurley that the slightest criticism gets an over reaction? Coach said we played great for 25 minutes. That's wonderful. The game is 40 minutes long. Not good enough if your aspirations are a title in March.

I think he's trying that. Issue right now is that he's shooting 30% from three in the 4 games, and 1-15 in exhibition. 22% across 41 threes taken. In other words, brutal.

We will always overreact to variations in three-point shooting, which is guaranteed to go up and down. For instance, I'm sure people will be totally sane when Karaban inevitably has a shooting slump this year.

He's becoming a much more complete player. 31% from three but he's shooting 67% from two, last season he was 48% from two. He's driving much better and finishing much better at the rim.

He obviously spent a lot of time this summer working on attacking...and its showing. Prob less time on his 3. I'm confident his 3pt shot will find him again. When Mullins comes back, Solo the slasher will be more valuable as AK and BM can also shoot the 3.

.3 on your list doesn’t work for me. I don’t think that we would have beaten this team by 20 regardless of what our game plan was. They are too good. We were better but they aren’t bad. I’m not a big fan of slowing things down that early but oh well. What I would like to see in those situations though would be to stick Reed at the post and get the ball in to him. He is a tough stop.

Who said this team is currently “great”? It’s ridiculous to call them only “decent” after beating a top team, with a top 3 pick, sans one of our best players
You are just in semantics at this point.

youre the one who called them decent. Why don’t you go reread your post #260

I’ll posit it here

You should go back and read your comment to me in post #260. You were the one who used the word decent., not me.

Your comment verbatim: “So any “decent” team missing one of their best players can beat a top 10 team with a top 3 draft pick?
You really didn’t think that post through. You either drank too much tonight or you need a drink.”

Not to jump in the middle here, but he's pretty clearly quoting you calling UConn decent. I included a highlight and a big red arrow to show you calling them decent

No it’s not lame. Who cares that we were up 13 when that starter went down? We only won by 2 points as they came back at the end. So when someone says we’re pretty good, how is that when we blow a big lead and they’re missing 2 starters? We are a decent team, not a great team at this point.
Hey dummy, here you are being the one denigrating a team who beat a top 10 team with a top 3 draft pick while missing one of their best players as being “decent”. This is the first post of yours I responded to. Post 199. And everyone downvoting or laughing at you for saying it.

You made a fool of yourself. Maybe you drank a little more than you could handle. Just take the L and move on. Or just keep making yourself into a bigger and bigger fool; maybe that’s your MO

I’ll admit I was wrong but your insults that I’m a dummy, a fool and drank too much are laughable. My contention to the original poster was that UConn loses a 20 point lead and folks are spinning it saying it’s a nothing to see here burger. I don’t agree with that take. And where did I denigrate the team in my post? Saying they are decent but not great is a fair assessment at this point in the season. I’m not ready to drink the kool aid yet. Let’s see where we’re are after the next 5 games.

It's been a huge jump and no one is talking about it. Last season he would pull a Jalen Adams and favor his strong hand on layups, even at the right side of the rim. This year, he's using both hands and is finishing in traffic. It was one of my biggest criticisms of his last year and it's clear that he's made a huge leap. It's going to make him so much more dangerous as an offensive player. Not at all worried about Solo's three-point shooting.

OR

You can just admit beating the number 7 team in the country is a great win and can’t be spun any other way.

Knowing they have the toughest schedule in the country coming up and betting they’ll lose at some point is disingenuous. I’m sure you can’t wait until they loss a game so you can somehow spin that into a justification for your terrible take.

Rashad was actually better off as a starter than a bench player, at least for the 2004 championship team. Originally, Denham Brown was the starter and Rashad Anderson came off the bench. Sometime later in the middle of the season Calhoun replaced Denham Brown in the starting lineup with Rashand Anderson and that team took off and won the title.

Your original point stands, some guys are better off bringing energy and spark off the bench. Stewart might be better off the bench-he was good in 2024 (i.e Marquette BET game) and on and off in 2025. No matter what role Stewart plays, Husky fans just want to see more consistency.

And in 06, their roles flipped again, and Rash gave us 13/gm off the bench. I believe wholeheartedly that Ross is more of an instant "effect" guy off the bench with his energy and athleticism, and that's something this team needs. Stew is not going to come in, bring energy, and make things happen. It's not his nature. We can cherry-pick a couple of games here and there, but he had more 0-point efforts off the bench than he had double-figure games. Again, I'm not knocking him. He's a flow guy. Ross, for better or worse, makes things happen, and he's probably our most athletic and energetic (spazzed?) player. That's a nice thing to insert to bring a wrinkle.

Didn't Rashad have an infection for him to start coming off the bench?

Besides. The main reason he came off the bench was because he couldn't play defense. Those guys usually come off the bench.

Bringing a defender off the bench doesn't make sense in basketball because why would you want your best defender guarding the second unit and not starting off on the best player.

Trust me, you’ve insulted yourself with how you’ve carried on in this thread more than I ever could. I know what your contention was, and I understand what your perception of the word “decent” must be. It’s laughable, but it is what it is; and I’m certainly done wasting mental energy and bandwidth on replying to you

99% sure the Staph Infection was in his junior year. Rash was brought off the bench for his offense, for sure. Ross is better off the bench for his energy, and he's been a better offensive player than Stew as well (at least through four games this year).

If we want to look at the BYU game... Ross subbed in for Stew with us down 6-5. When he came out, we were up 23-12. I was on your side last year with instances where Ross entered, didn't necessarily light up the scoreboard, but all of a sudden, we were on a run. His energy and athleticism are very important off the bench. I think we all expect Mullins to be the starter soon enough, so this is all moot anyway.

I just want to know these cases where a teams best defender came off the bench. Genuinely curious.

When I checked he started coming off the bench towards the end. And his junior year was his most inefficient year coming back from that which is part of the reason he moved. It was performance based I believe. Not fit based.

He’s not our best defender how can he be? He’s fouled out last 2 games both in less than 15 minutes. And while Ross is okay guarding on the perimeter Stew has proved to be solid against the low post, back in players he’s defended. He was the better of the 2 on D versus BYU. Ross needs to come off the bench, it’s his spot.

The dunk was the most exciting thing to me. He recognized it really fast and closed on the basket really fast. Blew by guys. Reminded me a bit of Ajax
Same!
