The kids love Cooley.

Cooley was recruiting Dunn when he was HC at Fairfield & Dunn wasn't considered a major D1 prospect. When Cooley moved to PC and Dunn exploded during the summer after his Jr year, the bond was already formed.

Most major programs recruiting Ledo backed off due to eligibility issues. We can now see why.

PC landed Ledo by default, because UConn and every other school knew he wouldn't qualify. After Omar Calhoun committed Rodney Purvis is the other guard we really wanted and just missed on. I'm not sure what you're getting at comparing assistant coaches? UConn has 3 former division 1 head coaches on staff.

Let's not kid ourselves. Rick Ledo would play for every school in the country if he were eligible. Dunn is really good too.

And yet he beat UConn out for Dunn, Ledo and An assistant coach no one thought would leave. EC can close!!!

Your assistant coach left after he was leapfrogged by Kevin Ollie. What a horrible decision UConn made!!!

No doubt, "if he were eligible"........do we think our standing would allow for our coaches to recruit him? I'm sure they backed off and with Dunn I'm not sure they recruited him as hard prior to his breakout summer, so in that case kudo's to Cooley for the recognition!!

Let's not caste stones.. JK. I have to agree that it should- still be an easy choice between UCONN and Pc. But they are definitely making progress and we or almost any other school would take Ledo in an NYC minute (30 sec).

Their time at their former universities were high water marks for the programs n the last 3 decades?

George Washington, Brown and Holy Cross have not seen better days. In fact, DePaul under Leitao had its best season since Ray Meyer's Mark Aguirre teams. What are former PC assistants up to these days?

Ohhh I'll play:

  1. They all have more NCAAT head coaching experience than Ed Cooley? Two of them actually brought their own programs to the dance (Miller at Penn and Hobbs at GW) and Blaney has filled in for Calhoun at least once (I refuse to put any effort into this and look it up when he was a head coach).
  2. Or maybe it was simply more post season experience?
  3. All were better college players?
  4. None of them were assistant coaches at BC (yuck)?
  5. Each has a nice shiny NC ring, or two?
I think 5 is enough.

That was silly, except he isn't likely to see any time for PC either. The poster you responded to didn't say he wasn't good enough, though it was implied. Ledo isn't seeing the floor for anyone this year.

Dunn would have gotten run also, but he would have been the 6th or 7th man. He wasn't beating out Napier or Boatright and likely would have been behind Calhoun due to skill set.

However, anyone bringing up your assistant coach as a great steal for PC is just talking out of their butt. He wasn't moving up at UConn and all of the guys who are assistants now are better. There is a reason he never got a shot at a D1 program. Don't get me wrong, he's a fine assistant but he wasn't moving up here.

#1 is we get the "I have Billy Donovan and you don't" asst coaching logic.....it's a winner right there but our guys are good!!

#2 is Ledo hasn't played a minute anywhere outside of AAU and HS so there's no way of knowing if he'e the best player on the Husky if he ties his shoes for them, none!! Ever hear of Felipe Lopez.....no need to elaborate! let him play first he's a mental case and you'll be lucky if you ever see him tie his shoes.........now please, just beat UMess!!

They were at schools that have not had much success.

DePaul. It's been three decades since Ray Meyer. They went downhill. Their high watermark was Dave Leitao. Even Purnell, who had had some success at Clemson, has lead therm to the bottom of the BE.

Brown. Perennial bottom-dwellers in all sports. They had a moment in the sun under Miller.

Hobbs brought GW to be ranked #5 in the entire country ... in MARCH!!! Something no PC coach has accomplished in eons.

When you look at Calhoun's assistants, you have to account for the jobs they took, and how they outperformed the head coaches they took over from, and those that replaced them. It's not easy to win at these places.

You're the one that came up with this: "each one of those former division one coaches all have something in common..."

This is why I responded to you.

As for mauconnfan, he's mistaken. Billy Donovan was never an assistant coach at PC. Or maybe I'm wrong if he was referring to something else.

Honestly Ledo probably would be the best player on this team the moment he ties his shoes. Unfortunately for PC, he probably doesn't even know how to tie his shoes.

john, best player on UConn or PC?? I know he's talented and sheer size allows him to potentially be better than Bazz and Boat but would he be?? I see Felipe potential!! But also NBA star............eventually

He could coach. UConn's PGs through the years came through him. Look at GW now--they are a total mess. From ranked to bottom of A10. Lots of guys get stuck in one job, and then rolled out. It happens. Laranagga finally got a break into his 60s. And no, he wouldn't get a job over Ollie.

Truth be told some guys are made to be damn good assistants........and others who could be great head coaches never get the chance to get a dream job at a high profile program.....it's timing, luck, visibility etc etc.......These guys are all damn good coaches just where they fit you never know! There are so many who looked so much better next to the HC making an impact that way while recruiting like a champ for him also............

Regarding Dunn, after Omar Calhoun UConn had no scolie available. Two months later when Drummond declared for UConn, Calhoun moved mountains to get Drummond in. Calhoun wouldn't have moved mountains for Dunn.
Regarding Ledo, I doubt UConn bothered with him since the spring of 2011. I do believe several other programs, like Louisville, backed off Ledo.
Ledo is ineligible this year. Because he changed his mind twice before finally entering PC, my guess is he was hoping for a better offer. Will he ever play college ball? Stay tuned.
As far as LaFleur, basically he saw the writing on the wall. He wasn't going to beat Ollie out for that eventual HC job. BTW, most UConn fans were not happy with Sellers and LaFleur as assistants. Check the threads from 2 years ago.
As far as head to head competetion on the floor, yes, PC has more than held it's own vs UConn. But, I'll take a loss vs PC, any day for the March/April results of UConn vs those of PC over the last 15+ years.
Now, go out and kick UMess .

Problem with UConn assistants was they all wanted to fly before they could run. Leitao had a good thing going at DePaul but quickly left it for UVA. Miller left Brown for Penn. Hobbs had issues with his AD and School President and their silly fans had visions of being in the Sweet 16 every year. He had a top notch class coming in the year he got canned. Dickerman did a good job at Central. The StonyBrook coach is doing well. Tom Moore might be the one disappointment.
