Borges article on candidates

The problem is, who is that replacement and what is the evidence that it won't turn into Ollie 2.0? Tom Moore, Glen Miller, and Burrell are al nonstarters. Donyell might be of interest, but his coaching experience is limited.

Hurley is the obvious #1 choice, Crean and Pikiell are intriguing though flawed in different ways, Pitino is the ultimate no, Geno is not happening, Donovan would be very, very intriguing but it's a huge long shot plus they'd have to wait to hire him. Everyone else there aren't realistic.

Donovan isn't realistic either. Aside from having to wait and see if he even gets fired there's almost 0 chance that another big time p5 program doesn't hop in with a more lucrative offer than what UConn could likely pay.

We are back to square one anyway if we hired someone tommorow. If Billy Donovan indicates interest, You wait. Every other name being thrown around other than JC , sucks.

Honestly would be a lot better if people thought rationally for 2 seconds than to perpetuate the Billy Donovan nonsense.

1. Hurley. Program builder, twice proven, with strong NE ties.
2. Dunleavy with JC as his bench coach while he gets more experience. Great pedigree working with Jay Wright. Villanova recruited a ton of great players in the NE over the last 10 years. Could JC be a #2 and would Dunleavy accept that as a condition of getting the job.

I could live with #2 as a backup plan, but maybe flip it around. JC as head coach, with Dunleavy as a coach in waiting.

0% chance Calhoun would accept a role as an assistant/associate here. Not to mention does anyone here believe he'd be able to contain himself sitting on the bench in a game while someone else was actively calling plays and yelling for defense and rebounding? There's a better chance that Geno becomes the men's hockey coach than Calhoun coming back as an assistant.

I'm somewhat warming to the idea of JC for a very strict defined period of time with Dunleavy as the designated successor. Still prefer Hurley.

Let me get this right.

The coach in waiting is going to be a guy whose entire resume is finishing 9th in the MAAC one time.

You can’t make this stuff up.
It's not ideal, but he coached under Jay Wright for seven years including four as his top associate. That plus 2-3 under Calhoun would be quite the learning experience. If we're left with that or Tom Crean/Eric Musselman, it's worth considering.

What? K State was mostly juko players and a dirty five star he paid. Not much different at South Carolina. He’s not clean.

No Martin, Pitino or other dirty slime ball.

No 75 year old JC.

Donovan would be great, but doubt he’d take it. Hurley is likely the guy. Becker would be ok. The guy at East Tennessee would be ok. Crean would be a last resort.
So he won with JUCO players. Sounds like a coach we need in this conference. I’ve never heard anything about him being dirty. And, what college coach isn’t a little bit dirty.

What if it went to crap like it did with Diaco and a search firm? Did we get our money back?
I actually totally get the Diaco hire. I was never a fan of his patter, but I can understand how he could have been viewed as a desirable candidate.

That said, no we didn't get a refund and no he didn't have to give his Broyles award back.

Looking st his recruiting history, it seems like Hurley mght, just might (not definitely) be living off of one big class.

I’d love to see what uri looks like end this year.

But we won’t get that chance.

Wasn’t diaco our 2nd choice anyway?

I just saw this during the URI game (not very clear but Hurley is in the pic). Coincidence? I think not!

URI offense looks awful. Almost the same as UConn’s. Really thinking he’s not the guy. Nothing but isolation and hero ball in the last ten minutes. They are about to lose.

I'm guessing it's going to be Hurley/Moore. If he blows up here, Moores on deck. We need a fresh start. TM was being considered back before Ollie was anointed. Maybe Scotty joins the staff.

Could JC be a stop gap? Maybe. He loves the school & could be inspired to establish a new team of coaches if he heard Pitino was being considered. I don't believe he would let that happen.

Benedict has a tough decision. My guess is he has a strong read already on the landscape. Search committee is all politics, due diligence. The best coach he's ever seen works in his building. Hope we get a good one that will reinvigorate the fan base & make March exciting again.
Why would JC with Moore in waiting, or JC with say Scotty Burrell in waiting, be any different than the last 2 years of JC 1.0?

Given his last choice, the last guy I want picking a future UConn Head basketball coach is Jim Calhoun. And undervwhat scenario does anyone see him taking the job an not insisting that Scott Burrell or. Donyell or Ray Allen is the perfect guy to take over. We have

URI has not been good for a month and a half. That was brutal at the end.

This is our savior. Yikes.

I don't see enough of URI. They didn't seem like a particularly talented team so Hurley must be good to get them where they are. But Hurley was shaky down the stretch. Some really bad offensive possessions out of timeouts. It looked like URI had seized control and than allowed Davidson to take it from them.

It’s going to be a long few weeks before we hire a coach. Peoples ideas are just getting worse and worse by the minute. 0% chance Calhoun is a coach in any capacity. Outside of Tom Moore coming along with Hurley, I doubt we see any Calhoun linked guys either.

Is Pat Kelsey at Winthrop no longer considered a good option for some reason? Seems like a great candidate to me along with Hurley.

as far as Hurley goes, you need to be looking at the total body of work not just one game. Hurley wins his conference. That matters more than what his offense looked liked today.
