Borges article on candidates

My call on the possible staff if Calhoun happens. Tom Moore, Howie Dickerman, Blaney's kid, and Donyell Marshall as his latest coach in training as his future replacement, but Burrell is possible here as well. I would think that Miller would stay and run the St. Joe's program.

How's this for fun we trade Ollie to OKC for Donovan (essentially Donovan got that job initially in part because KO re-upped at UConn)

Cooley would be a shot across the bow to PU.

And as much as I like the job Hurley has done and his pedigree I'd hate to be the stop-over for the possible replacement for Coach K at hated Duke.

You posted the same thing in another thread.

You should stop posting it.

Special duke buyout clause.

Speculation based on speculation is worthless. We have zero idea who might be interested.

And I think hiring Calhoun is a crummy idea. Hopefully a younger coach (as Calhoun was when UConn hired him) with some success as a head coach will want in. Someone who might stick around for a while and bring stability. Football is trying to regroup with a retread and we don’t yet know how that will turn out. And Edsall is much younger than Calhoun. We need to do exactly what Calhoun’s insistence on KO denied us. A national search.

Donovan would be a wet dream, my only concern is that he would be waiting for one of the Blue Blood jobs to open.

Hiring Calhoun is not my optimum but makes sense if the candidate pool isnt stellar. Buys us time to get someone on deck good instead of just any schmo

That's my thinking too. If you are going to get saddled with a mediocre coach for 3 years (and then needing a new one) or getting saddled with a great coach for 3 years and needing a new one, I'll take the latter.

Plus, he would instantly be able to recruit NBA hopefuls on name recognition alone...

Because if you aren't in the good graces of the search firms you don't get recommended and nobody hires anyone who isn't recommended by the search firms.

At the end of the day the idiots running athletic departments know WAY WAY WAY WAY less about sports than we do.

UConn's athletic department which has a billion national championships has been so woefully managed that they have been reduced to firing the basketball coach 'for cause' in an effort to bully him into a lower buy-out.

I wouldn't trust Dave Benedict to get my car home safely from a trip to the carwash. If they somehow don't end up with Hurley - they are going to make a hire so bad you are going to bleed from your eyes.
PLEASE NOT THAT .... I just had cataract surgery...

I'm guessing it's going to be Hurley/Moore. If he blows up here, Moores on deck. We need a fresh start. TM was being considered back before Ollie was anointed. Maybe Scotty joins the staff.

Could JC be a stop gap? Maybe. He loves the school & could be inspired to establish a new team of coaches if he heard Pitino was being considered. I don't believe he would let that happen.

Benedict has a tough decision. My guess is he has a strong read already on the landscape. Search committee is all politics, due diligence. The best coach he's ever seen works in his building. Hope we get a good one that will reinvigorate the fan base & make March exciting again.

Please not Tom Moore. He hasn't accomplished anything.

As much as I want Crean. I think its Hurley, I think DB already has a likely candidate close to lock up. Hurley will bring his recruits. This with hopefully Gilbert n Vital returning. We might be a 500 team next yr

Frank Martin needed senior Pullen and Thornwell to have truly great years. Not trying to commit to an old coach who only is good every 4 years.
Frank Martin won at Kansas State and South Carolina building these programs from scratch in areas where their isn’t a ton of talent. I think he would be a great hire. His teams always play tough.

Agree. JC said he would never turn over the reigns to Tom M. again after the recruits he brought in one year (who shall remain nameless) with character problems.

You guys really think there are no quality up and coming coaches in America?
We are talking about the list in that article. The only one who may fit that mold is hurley.

Oh, I thought you guys were talking about everybody. Hurley is a viable candidate. Billy D would be nice but he's not coming; I doubt he's even going to be fired.

I don't want JC because I don't want to see him die on the sidelines.

My point was Hurley, will bring Moore with him from his current staff. Say they accomplish a final4 together at some point. Hurley moves on.

Who cares to think that far ahead? IF UConn is making final fours its doubtful Hurley leaves (its not football where the CFP c*ck blocks) and if he did UConn would just hire the next big thing.

Yeah, I can live with that problem.

Uconn’s candidate pool would be a lot better than it is right now.

ESPN article talks about some interesting names like Frank Martin, and the Iona head coach. The Iona HC sounds interesting.

Two "B Listers" to be considered if A listers fail

Schmidt - St. Bonaventure

Tim Cluess - Iona
