Borges article on candidates

I applaud DB for not letting the KO thing drag on and making the obvious choice quickly. But other than that, I share your lack of confidence in him. He’s seemingly made no progress getting us into a P5 conference and has never been an AD. Diaco and KO were easy decisions, let’s see what he’s really capable of now.

This is funny. Which direction should he wave his wand in to make the P5 thing happen?

Two "B Listers" to be considered if A listers fail

Schmidt - St. Bonaventure

Tim Cluess - Iona

I don't know a lot about Cluess...but he sounds rather intriguing in the ESPN article.

Either would make me so happy. When the transition to Ollie took place, I said Bennett or Martin. Tony’s teams are a bit too boring - but I’ll stand by Martin - he reminds me of Calhoun...in Cuban form. Billy Donovan? If only - that would bring Championships...

Tony Bennett is one of my favorite coaches in the country and has been since early in his career. I think he’s awesome. Obviously at this juncture he’s not coming here, just funny to think...going to Va wasn’t some HUGE step, he’d have def come here at that time, I think.

I also like Martin but think he’s ultimately a “good but nothing special” coach. Not for winning/consistently being in the hunt for titles...jmo.

Also, totally get and to a degree totally understand the Martin-Calhoun comparison with intensity, etc. But obv he’s nowhere near as good and I think he’s a LOT crazier than Calhoun.

I dno, maybe over analyzing but it seems to be one of those sort of comparisons that’s become accepted and I think it’s a little overblown.

Just for fun, but half serious, Calhoun with Richard Hamilton, or Calhoun with Ray Allen.

That's exciting.

I do also like Danny Hurley as a potential coaching selection.
I would put Calhoun with Donny Marshall before those 2. Ray and Rip had great NBA careers but Donny is polished.

The state legislature should step in on this garbage.

It's using state money to further the careers of individual employees.

It's white collar crime.

They gave David the Oaf a raise - he can't hire a basketball coach without help?
And if his choice went to crap would you be leading the charge with "Why didn't he use a search firm? That's SOP!"

And what exactly do believe that he failed to do that would have gotten us a P5 golden ticket.

Let's see how he handles this before we hang the guy out to dry.

(FWIW, I think getting rid of Red Pants by having Randy come back was a very smart play.)

Donovan would pretty much have his pick of college jobs. I can’t see UConn as his choice but I am wrong a lot.

You want the state legislature to get involved with the coaching search ? Now, that is insane.

No. He wants the state to stop authorizing David Benedict spending state money to further his own personal career. Hardly seems controversial.

What if it went to crap like it did with Diaco and a search firm? Did we get our money back?

That’s what you took from this. Thoughts and prayers.

In a culture shock, it will NEVER happen, contrarian move, I'd go hard after Mark Few from Gonzaga. Best coach who's never won the National Championship.

Frank Martin won at Kansas State and South Carolina building these programs from scratch in areas where their isn’t a ton of talent. I think he would be a great hire. His teams always play tough.

What? K State was mostly juko players and a dirty five star he paid. Not much different at South Carolina. He’s not clean.

No Martin, Pitino or other dirty slime ball.

No 75 year old JC.

Donovan would be great, but doubt he’d take it. Hurley is likely the guy. Becker would be ok. The guy at East Tennessee would be ok. Crean would be a last resort.

Frank Martin’s offense has been top 250 in eFG% one time in his 6 years at South Carolina. He’s a great defensive coach, but that’s pretty damn bad.

we should not go backwards with Calhoun. We need to go forward. And no way with Pitino. UConn is the last school that needs a coach to come in after getting fired after an FBI invesitgation
Love Calhoun. Always will.
But Uconn needs to move forward without him.
Get the absolute best coach possible.

If Pitino agreed to a personal monitor hired by the University, and agreed to a wearing a male chastity belt, he could be the guy.

Frank Martin needed senior Pullen and Thornwell to have truly great years. Not trying to commit to an old coach who only is good every 4 years.
He took South Carolina to the final four and Kstate to the elite 8. When have you heard of those schools doing anything in basketball? You put Martin at a basketball school and he is an elite coach.

Hiring Calhoun is not my optimum but makes sense if the candidate pool isnt stellar. Buys us time to get someone on deck good instead of just any schmo

What is “stellar”? When Calhoun was hired he’d been reasonably notable at Northeastern. Northeastern. Sink in. And we were doormats of a much more attractive conference. Let’s see who might pop up from even a mid-major. Hiring Calhoun would have to. be on the assumption that not a single coach worth a damn is interested and that he can carry us for a few years so successfully that we can then get a”stellar” coach we can’t get now.

Is it possible the search firm was contracted a while ago and has been doing the legwork for a month or longer already?

we are in a different place than when JC was hired.

We have expectations now.

And don't kid yourself a huge part of this is getting fans to buy tickets and actually come to the games.

While we on the BY would like/appreciate a Becker for example, the ticket buying public is not budging until they see wins from an "unknown".

At least if we bring in a name coach that may help with the ticket sales.

this has to be a homerun hire. Lots of pressure on Benedict to get this right.

If Geno takes the job I will PayPal the funds for 8 tickets to XL and Gampel a half hour after it's official.

UConn would be the biggest sports story of the year and every game would be an event.

Let's do it Geno.

I want Geno. I think he wants it too. And Uconn Admin wants it. So why can't it happen. Would be a huge positive story.
Dude can coach and recruit. He doesnt want to retire with the big "What if" regret. Uconn would save money on his assistant that would take over the womans program. He could bring a woman to assist the men and he would get a mill bump in his pay.

1- Geno
2-Donovan
3-Hurley
4-Chris Mack

1. Hurley. Program builder, twice proven, with strong NE ties.
2. Dunleavy with JC as his bench coach while he gets more experience. Great pedigree working with Jay Wright. Villanova recruited a ton of great players in the NE over the last 10 years. Could JC be a #2 and would Dunleavy accept that as a condition of getting the job.
