Bill Walton

He had a great line in the Alabama/UNC game. Play by play guy said the game had turned into a war of attrition and Walton's reply was "I've already lost that war".

There’s a lot of Bill hate on this board for his announcing which I think is fun but he absolutely loves this team we have assembled. The guy whatever you think knows hoop.

I start warming up, like when he's adoring us, butt then he goes on some ramble

I will give you this, he loves life

Bill was hilarious last night. At one point he had the wrong team leading, and he was gushing about Andre Watson. He certainly loves Karaban and Clingan though.

Loved him, had me laughing all night. Sanogo starting dominating against Alabama and he said in the middle of a convo with the other guy, big, fast and powerful, I see it now, it was so funny and came pretty much out of nowhere. He said so much other crazy ship I can’t even remember but I enjoyed him. He enjoys life and while I’m watching him. I do too.

.-.
I'm not sure if I'm too old ("I like color guys to talk about the game, darn it!") or too young (most of the stuff he blabs about was before my time), but either way, I can't stand him on the mic. The only thing worse are the set pieces they have with him acting goofy with trees and such.

I’m amazed @ the number of folks on here who seemingly have never seen/heard a Walton called game before.

Last night is the norm, not the exception.
UM, I don’t agree - last night BW was his old goofy self and it was bearable.

The night in question - it was taking it to new level. The deviation away from the game for long stretches, the awkward personal interview, the on air gaffes and misstatements were at a level that maybe some intervention was needed (i.e. Cut the Mic)

The announcer should have taken control and insisted on calling the game even if Bill was way off course.

The things is, I like to hear the announcers call games but as I’ve gotten older, the more stupid things they seem to say. I’m tired of the miscalls that are soooo obvious to us at home. I can see I e realized, I don’t need them to tell me what I can see and see better than them lately. Very few things I need to hear from them but I guess that’s why Bill Walton was entertaining to me. I’m tired of them feeding me their narrative. They don’t get to tell me who the best player on the floor is or who the better team is cuz I’m about to find out with my own eyes. Years ago I could never watch a game without the announcers, now I almost hate them all.

I've noticed Walton never talks about himself. When he talks about the Celtics, it's always Bird, McHale or Parrish. When he talks about UCLA, it's always about his teammates. He avoided the question when asked to compare Clingan to himself.
He did last night when he casually mentioned that he won three Player of the Year Awards. Though he did not brag about them being National vs. Conference. So there is that.

.-.
That whole production was terrible, showing an interview with Phil Knight while game is being played. Save it for half time. Bill took away from the game. It's all about him.
That was maddening. Droning on about their glory days and things that mean nothing to the current generation of players.
Walton was definitely fishing for a sneaker deal. Ugh…

You must love John Sterling.

If I am driving around I enjoy listening to baseball on the radio. If the Mets aren't playing I would like to listen to Yankee broadcasts but Sterling and Waldyman drive me insane

How dare anyone here not love this guy? I’m ashamed of you.
Listen to these:

Alex Karaban is superb in every aspect of game!

Donovan Clingan is playing like 4 years NBA player!

Bristol? The center of universe!

The guy is oozing positive energy and heaping nothing but praises and loves for UConn from AD Dave, Dan Hurley to every player of UConn team!

When he snaps back from his meandering (which I fully enjoy) I found him to have some of the most on-the-nose, well-timed, and important insights into the games we played where he broadcasted

Bill has lived a charmed life through his work, skill and plenty of good fortune.

He's one of the top 3 accomplished college basketball players all-time and other than playing NC St and Thompson was the most skilled player every time he was in college.

He goes pro, is an MVP and wins a championship against Dr J in his prime and then his knees scat the bed.

It would he obnoxious for him to analyze a game based on his perspective and how views basketball. He'd be dumbing it down and he knows it.

In any game there are 2-3 things which capture his attention.

Otherwise, you get his life adventures.

Walton had just about every injury in the book from high school, through college, and the NBA including his knees but like many big men it was foot injuries which ruined his playing career.

Watching Oregon v UCLA with Bill Walton. Bill has mentioned how good UConn is about 4 times including “best team he’s seen all year.” He’s becoming my favorite broadcaster.
Out of one of the breaks, the studio was talking PAC12 and said that the two Zona guys made up the best duo or front court or something, and Walton says “I have to wonder if whoever just said that has seen UConn’s front court this year because they are fantastic.” Mr. conference of champions goes out of his way to talk UConn.

Right.

My point was he has experienced the highest of every high (on and off the court) throughout his life. He's not impressed by the mundane or the minutia of a game where there are hundreds of possessions between the teams. There's are a few plays every game that get his attention and the rest is whatever.

No need to fault him for being who he is and what interests him. Fault the producers, directors and talent folks who think his perspective is worthy of a games worth of action. Or, enjoy him. Or, mute him.

I have no problem with Walton, even if he weren't talking up the good guys. When he's the color guy you watch the game, like always, and just enjoy his meanderings, giggling when appropriate.

I like a lot of the things he likes so I have no problem listening to him. He loves the outdoors and America’s great places, as do I. I also love 60’s and 70’s pop culture, of which he’s an encyclopedia. He lived it and he lived large. He’s just a likable guy unless you have no patience lighthearted people. I find listening to him an escape from the mundane.
