Big East January '26 Thread - Take Two

Seton Hall went up 15 and then responded with one of the worst 10 minute stretches of basketball I've ever seen. Can't make layups, can't make FTs, can't grab defensive rebounds, multiple careless turnovers, and non-stop hacking on defense to put St Johns in the bonus early.
Good call.

St. Johns is not a Final Four contender, but it is still a good team. SHU didn't have the offense to close this out today, but SJU also played pretty well. Give some credit.

Butler just looks mediocre even though their tournament resume is not terrible.

I was not impressed with Seton Hall or St John’s tonight. We are so may light years better than either of those teams. I am excited to see how we matchup against Nova. A real convincing effort and this conference is already over.

.-.
I watched a little of the second half. St Johns destroyed them on the offensive glass. The Johnnies had possessions where they had four or five shots. Seton Hall was pathetic on the boards. The box score say they had 20 offensive rebounds but by what I saw that is low.

interrupt this program with some not necessarily key info. I saw it on some other message boards
Dayton and Saint Louis want in

Ok: do we think Seton Hall makes the tourney or not?

There is a 2024 vibe developing, where every semi-bubble team in the Big East seems to be losing conference games in the wrong combination to cost the Big East a big or two. Last year it worked the other direction, where the conference probably got one more bid than it deserved based on conference strength.

Seton Hall looks like a tournament team, but it has to stop its slide. It would be a good time for SHU to rip off a 3 game winning streak.

Butler does not look like a tournament team, but it has the third or fourth best OOC resume in the Big East.

McDermott is coaching the hell out of a bad Creighton team that does not deserve a bid.

Those three better hold serve against Xavier, Depaul, Georgetown, Marquette and Providence if they want a bid. Providence is the biggest problem among that group.

As I always say at this time of year, all the other bubble teams are going to pick up bad losses, or they wouldn't be bubble teams. Also, every league has a program that blew it in the non-conference but can play up on a given night. We have Providence, but the Big 10 has Rutgers, which almost picked off Iowa last night. Ole Miss can beat all but the Top 4 teams in the SEC. Virginia Tech is kind of salty in the ACC. TCU and Cincinnati in the Big 12.

Pretty disturbing we had such difficulty with what is clearly a terrible Georgetown team.
They played 3 out of 4 on the road including 2 in a row at Seton Hall then at Georgetown......Team looked like they were clearly on fumes....I find it more interesting that all these teams who play us and give their all seem to lay an egg in their next game.....Tells me the put so much into the game and after losing just came crashing down......UConn always takes a team's best shot......I have no concerns whatsoever.

Creighton hasn't exactly looked good tonight but the refs are doing all they can to make sure they pull this one out.
Yeah I don't know about that last foul call on Xavier. That doesn't usually get called.

Gotta be kidding me with that last shot!

Creighton got some home cooking at the end of the game, with a phantom foul called on Borovicanan on a drive where Swartz looked like he was about to lose control of the ball all on his own. Got to give him props for a long rebound on his own missed free throw. That is some lousy hustle by Xavier.

Creighton is ranked 76 in D on KenPom, but they look a lot worse than that. That said, they know how to put the ball in the basket. They get a lot of easy baskets because of good off-the-ball movement.

I really like Tre Carroll as a 1-on-1 player, but he is pretty selfish. Tonight wasn't his fault, but he has cost them some games this year.

Edit: Borovicanan's late foul was his 5th. He is their leading rebounder, and might have gotten that rebound if he was still in the game.

Needless to say, Creighton not a tourney team. Squeaking by a bad Xavier team at home isn't showing a lot.

Donny is unhappy with the defense by both teams in that game. I agree with him. It was pretty bad.

We know both that:
A) we’ve been playing poorly of late and these margins are way closer than they should be and
B) the other teams have nothing else to play for aside from UConn…notice how they often bottleneck immediately after playing us, PC had come in with a win over St. John’s beforehand.

Malik Mack shot 1/14 last night, he was considered a big portal win a couple of years ago after his freshman season at Harvard but he's been very mid

Yeah he has - can look good, but also look really bad. Inconsistent.

I don't like Malik Mack's game at all. I think he is very inefficient and inconsistent player offensively and he is not good on defense. He struggles to score near the basket due to being short and slight and a lot of times he has to rush his perimeter shots to make sure they don't get blocked.

He is 6th in the Big East in assists, but I don't think he does a great job in facilitating offense for Georgetown, although that might be more of Cooley's fault.
