Big East February '26 Thread

There was a wave of bubble losses tonight. Seton Hall has no margin of error, but they still have a pulse.

This is a Big East embarrassment. We talk about rock fights, but this just goes to show how BE officiated games can devolve into chaos. In the BE, if you can't entertain them playing good basketball, entertain them with fisticuffs and fighting.

This is all on Kim English and Providence. It's fine for the fans to taunt Hopkins but English had his players out there looking to hurt Hopkins and then the fans were going wild celebrating the players trying to hurt the St John's players.

Just an ugly look for Providence and Kim English is a joke.

.-.
Providence has a choice this morning. Fire English and kick Powell off the team, repudiating the thuggish behavior of its coach and players, or do nothing, which is an endorsement of the premeditated assault that occurred yesterday, and become an accessory after the fact

I mean, technically yeah , it was definitely a little extra, but I’m cool with an old-school hard 80s 90s big east foul once in a while, especially if it’s on Hopkins and anybody from St. John’s lol

Majority of takes on the PC board are the right ones (saying it's a terrible play and Powell needs to be punished) but there are some funny quotes on there:

I saw it 17 times. After Hopkins got in his face after getting up the scrum was on. Hopkins doesn’t get in his face and it’s a tech and nothing more.
Now we’re defending Hopkins. Lol if anyone is an embarrassment to the program it was him. Dirty foul by Powell but come on. Did you expect Powell not to react to Hopkins when he challenged him.
Such an exaggeration. It was a hard foul and yes he was sending a message yes. That happens plenty is of games. Red e atmosphere and situation just elevated the emotions of it.
Oh yes I can. Powell and his antics was the culmination of the zebras letting fouls (hard fouls) go uncalled. No excuse for Powells mugging but if the game was called tighter from the beginning it would have sent a message to the players
I don't think Powell was intentionally out to hurt Hopkins. He gets the ball, it's not like he clubbed him in the face and had no play on the ball. Now how he got to the ball was through Hopkins head, but this growing narrative that with a 1 point lead Powell was trying to annihilate Hopkins I don't agree with.
I think it's a leap to suggest a flex, which even someone like Ryan Mela did later in the game, insinuates intent to injure.
Actually don’t mind the occasional bench clearing dust up. It creates an intensity and a vibe that can’t be created any other way. It made the game riveting and memorable. It’s a side effect of physical play which I think pro and college basketball desperately need more of.

I actually think other coaches will see our crowd and be attracted to it. Our team stinks yet it was a sellout crowd and we had the most intense environment in all of college basketball today.

I watched Duke earlier. They look like Superman this year and I’m not sure anyone has the kryptonite.

Honestly they are good, but Clemson was dreadful and highly overrated. The only Superman in them is the reffing crew. Always get away with murder. The other night I was watching in the first half their first foul was with 8:32 left. If you watch them play defense, and watch Boozers physical play you would know that wasn’t true except with the refs. But again, they’re talented no doubt.

I don’t see the Hall winning at Butler, they aren’t a great road team and like most of the Big East, Butler defends its home court against most.

I will agree with one thing. It is absolutely a product of how this league has chosen to officiate games. A game between the two programs that most take advantage of how physical of play the league allows is bound to get very chippy and at that point you’re playing with fire. For about 50 reasons, the league really needs to get the officiating in line with modern basketball.

Seton Hall needs to win at Butler today. No Bizjack for Butler.

Unfortunately, I think there will be more of this in the next few weeks as good players on teams that are not going to make the Tournament start to dial back their participation. Why get hurt in the last month of a lost season?

He got hurt in the UConn game and didn't finish, he's legitimately hurt with a sprained wrist

The anti-Big East posts are getting stupider and stupider. The conference does not have some nefarious conspiracy against UConn, nor does it have a conspiracy to allow some bench warmer to take a cheap shot at the 3rd or 4th best player on St. Johns. And I thought that you guys were telling me that St. Johns was the beneficiary of the conspiracy, but now they are a victim? You guys need to make your conspiracy theories more coherent.

Kim English proves he should not be a Head Coach just about every game. The situation in the Providence/St. Johns game is not more complicated than that.

A lot of you hate the Big East. I wish we were in the Big 10 too. Do you really need to complain about it in EVERY SINGLE FUDGING THREAD? It is official: We have the worst fan base on the Internet. The team is a contender for the national championship and this is the nonsense that half of you want to post about.

There is too hurt to play, and too hurt to play. If Butler was 17-8, he would probably be playing tonight. At 13-12, take the night off.

What on earth are you taking about? Who in this thread said there was a conspiracy?

So I went on Friar Talk to see what they were saying and the majority were totally disgusted with Powell. Friar J who often posts here who I consider to be a good poster was especially ticked, saying he has given up on the progam until English is fired. Can’t blame him. Question for the Providence fans about Bryce Hopkins. Who would you rather play for, Kim English or Rick Pitino? Give the kid a break.
