BIG 12 25-26

They have some solid wins. Beat Baylor, West Virginia and Utah all on the road, all upper half teams in the Big 12. That's not something bad teams do.
Those are some solid wins; I was just going off the eyeball evaluation vs a team (ISU) I've seen a lot.
By "not very good" I wasn't calling them "bad". I was just surprised what I saw given their record.

The league is weak sauce this season. Techs early wins, and into conference also, made people think they might actually be a contender but they were pretenders. A few good teams, a pack of mediocre teams and a bottom of horrible teams. My own take is that only TCU and Baylor should be ranked. I'd drop TT and WVU out, they are not Top 25 teams. ISU might be playing like a Top 25 again but I'd need to see us run off a 5 game win streak before that would be my vote.

Lot's of talk of parity "blah blah blah" but to me it's more widespread mediocrity.

Yeah I get that the Big 12 overall isn't very strong this year. I just think everybody in the conference is all over the place, like I said earlier (might not have been this thread) it's almost impossible to guess what the outcome of any given game will be.

Actually have some games today that impact the Big 12 race. Battle for 1st combined with a battle for other two to hang on to a ranking. If both Tech and WVU lose they should be outside the 25 in my opinion.

#14 Baylor @ #22 WVU -12 noon ESPN
#12 TCU @ #21 Texas Tech - 1pm FS1

Baylor and TCU need to win to have any hopes of the ultimate champ creeping back into two-seed consideration. Actually, one of them would probably need to win out the season and conference tourney.

Well, so much for Baylor. Looks like West Virginia was in control of this one for most of the game.

.-.
Just when some thought Texas Tech had run their course for the season, they grind out a win against TCU. Maybe they're not done just yet?

Arizona St. was generating some buzz early. Getting thumped on their home floor by Kansas St. today. A very mediocre K State this season. This is the kind of game ASU needs to win to keep moving forward.

The Big 12 will be lucky to get a 4 seed or two. I don't see any Big 12 team, even with a winning streak, getting anywhere close to a #2. Baylor is not a hosting team after today and TCU should be dropped to a middling 4-seed, maybe poll at #14 for Baylor's old spot.

There are only 4 ranked teams and the quality wins left on the calendar aren't numerous and nobody is going to get a top 10 win because there are no top 10 teams in the league.

I kinda feel for Olivia Miles at this point. She gave up a sure lottery pick last season for one more campaign. It doesn’t look like such a good decision anymore.

Probably making more money in Lubbock than she would have last summer in the W. And they should still be at least be playing to this month to keep a host for March and a run at home to the Sweet Sixteen.

I don't think she's in Lubbock.

I initially thought BYU was looking better already under their new first year head coach. As the season has wore on, it's getting kinda hard to tell any difference from last year. 5-6 in conference currently, have lost by double digits 3 of their last 4 games. Trailing early against K State today. Looking at their schedule, it appears they are really NOT good on the road in conference.

edit--yikes, blown out by 25 @ K State.

An article about BYU's victory over Iowa State yesterday here:

What caught my eye was the quote from Coach Fennelly, regarding the optics of certain league(s) vs others:

"The strain of 18 games in this league, with different styles of play, when you catch a team on a given night, it's part of the narrative nationally that we all have to continue to fight," said Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly, the league's all-time wins leader. "When we beat each other up, a lot of national people think our league isn't strong. When other leagues beat each other up, they get credit. I don't understand that necessarily.
"Women's basketball in our league probably needs to work toward the same perception of men's basketball in our league," he added. "You look at the scores game-to-game, and you're going to see that."

Saw that on Twitter X to.

Me = 😳 Cyclones were projected as an 80% chance of winning that games. It's another bad loss for the Cyclones.

That's sort of a crock of BS coach-speak. My home league is weak sauce this year and there is no way to spin that otherwise without just spouting self-serving PR. I don't like saying that but I try and steer closer to truth and not the homer fan-boy stuff. As it sits right now I am not sure any Big 12 team is worthy of hosting come March Madness.

Committee might pick the 1st place team as a #4 if it's not a tie between Baylor and TCU. They will certainly not be swayed by a coaches transparent attempts to fluff up the league and teams perception via post game comments. I think both are borderline at this point. Leagues not completely awful but it's pretty mediocre.

Yeah...Coach Fennelly isn't making much sense here especially when you look at the ACC. Most of us on the board have said similar comments about the conference being in a down year like the BIG12. Sounds like he's miffed and wants to point the finger at something.

What about the ol' "there are no off nights in--insert conference name here." Most conference schedules are a grind for most teams, doesn't mean the conference is particularly strong. Yeah, Fennelly isn't going to convince ANYONE about how good the Big 12 is this season.

Don't know where @Plebe is, but I've missed their posts with this phrase.

Maybe I'll start incorporating it with my favourite chaos GIF in tribute. 😉🫡

Last night Texas Tech notched their 10th conference win and improved to 23-3 overall. 5 regular season games left--@ Okie State, Baylor, @ Colorado, @ Kansas, Arizona St. Not a cake walk, but should win several more games. Easily should finish w/ 12 or more conference wins and 25+ overall w/ conference tourney and post season still left. I don't care what their NET or any other metrics are, that's a huge turn around for them for what they've been the last decade plus.

The Devil's sweep Utah 71-61 for their 20th victory of the season.

This is amazing

Last year the Devils were 10 and 22 and after sending Natasha Adair on her way Molly Miller may perhaps be the most transformational hire in ASU history. This was an emotional victory and one that signifies I think the importance of coaching particularly in the new era

Big game for two of the three title contenders, TCU at Baylor on ESPN. WVU has already won and moved to 10-3. Tonight will be big for (1) title aspirations (2) hopes to host come March. I think only one Big 12 team will host, maybe as a default pick by the committee thinking they need to reward a P4 champ. Not sure I agree with that but we'll have to see how the contenders do the next five games or so. I don't think the Big 12 tournament result will mean squat unless it's the same team on top which might reinforce a seeding pick for the committee. No run through a weak conference tourney is going to magically elevate a team that isn't already an established seed.

I agree in terms of the big picture that is where the contenders get seeded.

With that said given the five through 12 current ranking the tournament could play a part in who dances and who doesn't.

For example for Molly Miller to take the Sun Devils to the big dance I think they need one win in the tournament that's assuming they're in the top 8. If they are playing on the first day of the tournament they may very well need three wins in order to dance.
