Thanks for the tip. I will check it out. I spend a lot of time in Niantic in the summer months. All other pizza places are bad. If you spend time down there, hopefully you've hit The Shack for breakfast & the Flander's Fish for at least Sunday brunch. Both very good.

Born and raised in EL and parents still there so there semi regularly. The Shack and Flanders Fish Market are both great. The Shack has been around forever.

Cucina is off the charts great pizza. It is located near Flanders Fish Market. Not as good as Cucinas but solid pizza in Niantic is Rays next to the Morten House. Rest down there pizza wise is not so good after Vinnys Pizza Haven, which was real good, went out a bunch of years ago...

I spent all my summers there as a kid, my parents still have their place there for the summers & have lots of family there. I love that town. I still think of The Shack as the Little Brown Shack. Gramma used to bring the kids there back in the day! LOL I think I remember Vinny's. Near where S&S is now? I remember Bocchi's as a kid... If you're old enough! I've not tried Ray's either.

You a Black Pointer?.....we likely attended the same keg parties in early 80s depending on your age. I graduated ELHS in 84.

Yes Vinnys was there...it is some new pizza place now that is called something else and mediocre. Bocchis was decent. Check out Rays...pretty good. But Cucinas is a must...it is great. And go to the Eclectic Chef next to the movies for great grinders...

LOL - My summers were in Attawan, though I spent a lot of time in Black Point, namely the Black Point Store, playing video games & buying candy. I was only a summer kid & spent the rest of the year elsewhere. You got me beat in age by a few years. If you were from Black Point, I probably passed you by at some point.

PS - There's a branch of Hartford Giant Grinder on the corner of Pennsylvania & Hope. Very good.

I've got a new one to add to the list: Otto in Chester.

Heard about it recently and it was compared favorably to Bufalina in Guilford, which we love. Both are small and serve only small pies from wood-fired ovens, and both have an excellent, fresh seasonal salad to complement the pies. Whereas Bufalina is BYOB (which we really love), Otto has a pretty varied wine list of interesting Italian whites, reds, rosés and sparklers, and a few decent bottled beers (also Avery sodas).

Went to Otto tonight.

For starters, it was a great early evening to be in Chester, thanks in part I believe to our own August West and his band, who could be heard perfectly, rolling up the Pattaconk River while we waited outside for our table on a beautiful night. That "Eyes of the World" killed! I could have waited forever while listening to that, but shortly after you went into "Shakedown Street" our table was ready. I think that was the end of show if I'm not mistaken though. Looked like a great crowd.

Anyway, we got four pizzas for five of us and it was exactly one pie too many, which meant it was perfect because we have leftovers.

The shaved fennel salad was insanely good. I will get that every time.

The margherita with liuzzi mozzarella, stracciatella and basil was probably the most popular and favorite for a few.

The porchetta, smoked mozzarella and wood-grilled asparagus was the favorite of our oldest daughter. I believe she had five or six pieces. I loved it also; my wife liked it but found it too rich/smoky after a few bites.

The soeltl farm pork ragù, mystic melville cheese and must ard greens pie had a nice little spice to it, with a great combination of bitter from the greens and sweet/spicy sauce and creamy cheese.

The simple cheese (half) was the least impressive, but good; the pepperoni (half) was excellent.

I think it is very different from Bufalina, which seems more like traditional apizza done extraordinarily well. This is a bit less traditional in terms of toppings, but that margherita killed it every bit as much as that "Eyes of the World." The other specialty pies were done really well, but more in the contemporary gourmet pie realm than traditional imo.

I give the edge to Bufalina overall for my tastes (and the BYOB!), but we will definitely be back to Otto, too.

Especially with the incredible sighting of a full, bright, double rainbow over the town as we left while the fringe of a storm must have glanced the area.

Great night. Definitely a good place to check out.

So...August, you been there? Where you by any chance wearing an olive green jacket? I thought I might have seen you standing out front as we drove by on our way home.

Hahaha......yeah man considering I just left Otto I would agree, been killing that place lately. And yeah, I was wearing olive today. Thanks for the kind words, you shoulda said hi! Good afternoon. I don't play many Sunday afternoons, that's usually a death slot, and to get a good turnout 1.5 miles from my house ( I never play close to home either, like ever) was pretty cool. Double rainbow you mentioned as I was loading out.

Too funny. We took a bunch of pics and some video, too.

I had no idea anything was happening in town--we just heard about Otto and wanted to give it a try. As soon as we pulled down Main St. we saw the crowd from the Pattaconk spilling into the street and we could hear the music everywhere. Once we parked and got out of the car I realized what song it was, and I knew that it was being played so well and true to form that it could only be one of a few bands, including yours. My wife checked her iPhone for the Pattaconk schedule and sure enough I saw it was. It really sounded great, and it was such an idyllic setting at that time of day. I would have said hi, but we were literally driving by and I just caught a glimpse; I think you were actually staring at the rainbow at the time, but we didn't realize it was there for another minute or so.

I hadn't seen or heard Shakedown in many years. I'll try to make a point to catch you guys some time soon and I will say hello.

whoever recommended Stretch's in Newington, good job. had it for lunch Sat and it was awesome. right up there with the other favorites I mentioned.

Has anyone tried Brixx in Southington? Thinking about getting fat tonight..

I'm happy I made the top 50. 34 is Ray's number, it's all good from here. Enjoy the good za we do have in this area.

Just got back to AZ from Ct
Three Pepe's trips in three weeks.
Danbury twice ,New Haven once.
Actually my wife liked the fresh tomato summer pie better in Danbury better.
She also wanted to ship a case of Foxen's white birch home.
Sorry to hear about Sally's but I was never a zealot.
I will have to be content with Grimaldi's until Sept.

Not thin crust, but I grew up with Tommy's Pizza in Middletown. My grandparents ordered it all the time when I was over as a little kid and its still one of my favorites. Not the best in CT by any means, but still a damn good pizza IMO.

For best overall in CT I vote Modern's Italian Bomb with Pepe's White Clam a close second.

Also have to try Krust on main street in Middletown. Relatively new place with excellent reviews.

Tommy's was right there for our baseball and hoops teams demo Middlesex CC………..went there quite a few times

Wow!
As an Italian American and native New Havener, let me clear up some ignorance. Good apizza (the real name) in CT previously began and ended in New Haven. Over the decades it has spread pretty well into the rest of the state. But New Haven and the big 3 are still at the pinnacle. Pepe's, Sally's and Modern. Formerly Bimonte was up there too. Know why? Peppe And Sally both have Bimonte blood and they are all related. I think Pepe's is best and so does the recent review of the top 100 pizza's in the US. (Sally's & Modern were like #7 & #14 but not sure of the order. Nothing else in CT was in the top 20)

Now, if your pizza comes in squares or has an adjective before it (e.g. Greek-, deep dish, artisan) it is not pizza. You may like it. But you're wrong. It doesn't make you a bad person, it just disqualifies you from this conversation. Like if you said Tyler Olander was the most talented big on UCONN's team last year.
I am proud to have grown up and lived in areas where a Pizza Hut, Domino's, Papa John's, etc was never able to stay in business.

Finally was able to try modern today and it's made me a believer. I would definitely slide it ahead of Pepe's and right behind stanziato's in terms of best pizzas in the state.

Bimonte's in Hamden was very good you are correct……..now I had Little Rendezvous in Meriden a few weeks back when visiting family and the new owner has a good idea of how to make pizza, it's very good and Sal's in Meriden is owned by a family who I have heard worked at Pepe's at some point…………while not Modern these 2 are better than the Pepe's "newer franchises" which are not to be thought of in the same breath as New Haven's……...

100% agree. Usually go to Rendezvous a couple times a month. Really picked up once Paul retired - but back in the 90's when Paul was making pizzas in his prime, Rendezvous was top 5 in the state.

At this point I think the more interesting conversation is the best non-New Haven apizza in CT (in terms of location, not style). IMO Pepe's, Sally's, Modern and BAR are on Mount Rushmore. Most people have their own preferences among them and no one is likely to change their mind.

I've always loved hearing and exploring the preferences for New Haven style apizza that's almost there, and that's where I've historically placed the likes of Bimonte, Grand Apizza, Zuppardi's, Palm Beach, Tolli's, Roseland and a few others.

Now there is a new generation of smaller, wood-fired pizza places like Bufalina in Guilford, Otto in Chester, Krust in Middletown and Da Legna in New Haven. These are my new faves. They make only small pies and usually have some very interesting and unusual toppings, along with the traditional favorites. I like them better than the almost there places, and in some cases--like Bufalina--I like them every bit as much as the New Haven holy trinity-plus one. I'm interested to hear about more of these types of places.

After going through this thread yesterday I was really in the mood for pizza so I ended going to Krust with my buddy for dinner. I am happy to confirm as 8893 said that it is VERY good! Love the wood fired taste and smell. Got the meat pizza with pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, and roasted peppers. A bit pricey ($16 for a 14" pie), but worth it IMO.

9/10

Glad you liked it. They have some nice sides too iirc, and a few very nice beers on tap.

I'm feeling pizza in my future tonight. Been mostly gluten-free for the past month and I've got a fever for some pizza right about now, but tonight is likely to be from my grill at home rather than out at a restaurant. Weber makes a pizza stone for the grill that I get pretty good results with, but you've gotta watch the heat after the first pie because the stone really retains it and the bottom of the pie will burn before the top gets cooked sufficiently for my tastes. I use tons of corn meal and lower the heat after the first pie.

Joey D's makes a surprisingly good pie (and meatball subs) out in Morris Cove. Tiny little place, but they clearly understand New Haven style pies...
