Why would you drive 30 min to Mystic for Pizza as opposed to 20 min to New Haven for Pizza?
The man has an excellent point. Drive 30-35 minutes for crappy pizza or 20-25 minutes to the Pizza Capital of the World. No brainer, except for Fishy who would eat cardboard and be happy for its sustenance.

They’re tourists and New Haven is a crap hole.

Also, lol at someone thinking driving to New Haven from Clinton is 20 minutes. It’s 20 minutes if you leave 2 am. Any other time of day and it’s traffic roulette.

Some people value the experience rather than just going somewhere so you can pretend that you just experienced the best whatever when, really, it’s something you can have at any number of places.

They didn’t sit at a strip mall pizza place and jerk off to the instagram likes they got when they posted a picture of their barely mid-pizza - they went out and had an experience.

Good for them. They’re living while these people are just treading water while dying inside.

I loved the recommendation above for some chic pizza place with a “few tables inside”. That sounds like a hoot.
 
Yes, everyone is very impressed with your tastes in literally the simplest foods imaginable. Waiting for you simpletons to start fetishizing PB&J. You've already hit pizza, Mac and cheese and grilled cheese, so it's a natural next step.

While those sound different it’s just not a PBJ unless it’s Skippys creamy PB with Welch’s grape jelly. Anything more than that with a nice glass of milk isn’t an actual PBJ but I respect their creativity.
 
They plan on enjoying many restaurants, but they also have some friends coming who hate seafood. When they get together, they usually go to a pizza place or cheap Italian restaurant.
They have been to Mystic Pizza several times. We all moved to VA in 2004 to be close to my brother who was diagnosed with stage 3 lymphoma at the time (he's been cancer free ever since his treatment). When my dad was younger he spent time in Clinton when he was a lifeguard and they are going up there to reconnect with the area and meet some old friends.

They got pizza from Grand Apizza once before and it was burnt. A couple we know down here, who stay there every year on their way to the Cape also mentioned Palmeiri's (sorry if that's spelled wrong).
Was your dad a lifeguard at Hammonasset Beach? I was a guard there in 1968-1971.

Right, and because 95 up through the shoreline is a peach in the summer too?

I like how the "experience" has factored into the equation and somehow the edge still goes to some place a movie was about 30 years ago as opposed to were going to take you to what is considered to best pizza joint in the country.
 
I mean I’ve only heard from others that the original in Mystic is only decent while I have visited Stonington a few times due to golf trip stops in the winters in Westerly. That for sure is only decent, to the point I won’t get pizza on most stops and instead a sandwich or alike. I mean I do get the “history of the movie” but it’s not even close in quality to Grande so it all depends on expectations of the friends get together.

Nanas is also a bakery and has some of the best doughnuts you will ever eat. The flavor of their crust is the best i've ever had. I'd recommend it but only if you can handle words like sourdough and umami. The outdoor tables are on the water next to an ice cream shop. All things I'd consider a hoot.

Your daughter graduated already? Geeze seems like yesterday you posted asking about the school because she was choosing between a few schools. Time flies.
 
Depending what they're looking for, Clinton also has a winery, Chamaurd (sp?), that offers a relaxing setting, good food, and...well...Connecticut wine.

Actually, no, but she’ll be a senior there next year. It’s crazy.

She’s actually been studying and working for a consulting company in Tbilisi, Georgia since January, so she made up for the convenience of going to school right near where we had a boat by studying abroad 6,000 miles away.

Related note - she says the pizza there is amazing.
 
Met the head chef for Sallies today, great conversation, great guy. Never knew such a position existed.
 
I live in Florida aka Pizza Hell. You can’t believe what they sell as “NY (or Northeast) Style” pizza here. The Buffalo chicken pizza is baked chicken on top of a gluey crust with barbecue sauce instead of red sauce. Every single pizza I’ve had here is undercooked. Ick.

Didn’t seem to catch on here in Philly.

Saw this a while back on a bike ride and was like “what the ..”, “who the heck would…” “what the heck even is….”

Turns out I wasn’t the only one intrigued, and the internet has the answers. Found an old article by one of the original employees who recounted that when the owner started the place, the big rage at the time in restraurant names was “_____ style”(home style, family style, Greek Style etc) so the guy decided on Florida style because he thought of Florida as kind of exotic and desirable.

He did have a unique take on pizza though, as he developed the “inside out pizza” which was a tiny pie, folded over, and thrown into the deep fryer. Small enough to eat with one hand, it apparently had its fans back in the day. Since learned its a real thing called a panzarotti.
