OT: Best Pizza in CT

Their Seafood Pizza is very expensive, but loaded with fresh scallops, lobster and shrimp and probably the best signature item on the menu. I agree that their pizza otherwise is good not great, but they do have some good, unique specials like escarole and bean pizza. Their fresh pasta entrees are a better deal imo--they are huge and very good.

As a kid back in the day when parents let their kids walk anyway as long as it was daylight and with other kids, used to go to Saturday morning Derby HS football games with the neighborhood gang and drop a dollar or two on a slice at Roseland after. Good memories. Went back a few years ago and was surprised how pricey they did get. I mean, I can understand the price on the seafood pie; but, even the basic stuff is high. Any idea why? Not like Derby has gentrified as there is money floating around town unlike parts of downtown new haven.

I haven't been there in years myself and I don't have any insight on the prices other than for the seafood pie.

I may have already told this story in the early pages of this thread, but I went there with my sister and brother-in-law around 15 years ago after visiting my father, who had been admitted to nearby Griffin Hospital. I had been telling my brother-in-law about their epic seafood pie and he insisted that he and I split one, and he insisted on paying. The menu only said "market price," and he joked with the waitress, "We'll take that, as long as it's not more than $40." She laughed as she walked away, "I'm sure you know that it's more than that!" The look on his face was priceless. He truly thought he had thrown out a price that was way more than it could possibly be.

When the pie came and it was "just" a small, he started to grumble some more--until we started eating it. There was at least 2" of nothing but fresh, buttery lobster, scallops and shrimp covering the entire pie, and we couldn't finish it. We had two pieces left over and he insisted that I take them home.

The next night we had two other couples over for dinner. I took those two small pieces and cut them into tiny squares and we served them as hors d'oeuvres. Our dinner guests raved.
 
Had Hubbard Park Pizza in Southington last night - wasn't impressed with their buffalo chicken pie. However, I ordered a Hawaiian pie as well and it was surprisingly very good.

Everyone that has or had money in derby/ansonia gets their pie from there. There are still enough of that generation to support it.

Does Derby play Ansonia and/or Seymour anymore? Since Derby was folded into the SCC when the Housatonic merged with everyone else in the area, only the annual Turkey Day game between Shelton and Derby has continued (talk about a size disparity, Derby has what 300 students and Shelton has about 1,800 or so). Next time through, I'll try & stop.

So here's a scenario that actually happened to me last year when I went to my bro-in-law's graduation in PA and after a gig in Newport last year. It is late, you want pizza, but the only place that delivers is a chain place. What is your fave of the chains (Domino's, Pizza Hut, Papa John's, etc.)? We went with Domino's b/c they were willing both times to deliver to the hotel and as usual, it was pretty hideous. My fave of the chains is Papa Gino's which I believe is still holding on in CT. There was one in New London I went to all the time as a kid. We also used to do the Pizza Hut buffet too when I was in high school and my stomach could handle 1o pieces of pizza in one sitting.

Funny last time I had a delivery pizza while out was with the guys last summer. In Newport staying at the Best Western had just had a day with the guys golfing and then closed the bars on Thames and cabbed back - Dominoes was the only one open. It was "awfully" good at that time. :eek:

Yup, we always played at One Pelham East (on Thames) and would stay at the Motel 6 (scary place) and Domino's was your only option. Not good, not good at all. Although I will say that the 2 larges for $10 Wednesday deal when I was at UConn was pretty special.
 
I've always thought Papa John's was the best publicly traded company that delivers pizza. But if I had to rank them:

1. Papa John's
2. Dom's - college nostalgia, 3am drunk pizza orders. It tasted good then, it doesn't now.
3. Pizza Hut
4. Sbaro's

Sbaro belongs at the top of that list. Not even close, unless you really like fast food pizza. Sbaro is decent NY style pizza.

I used to have Papa John's at the top.... I remember looking forward to it when I'd visit my sister in DC. Then they opened up in Rocky Hill and it is the only pizza I've ever thrown out.

You are probably right. The difference is that I used to only eat the top 3 in the early hours of the morning after a night of collegiate drinking. I've only had Sbaro sober. This gives me a challenge for when I go into New York on Wednesday, thank you.

One Pelham lol? That was a Monday last year we saw Bruce Jacques there, funny dude.

Finished the evening closing Buskers Irish Pub on Thames - left the car there and cabbed back.

In the northwest corner, Deanno's in Lakeville has the best pizza by far, probably due to his Brooklyn roots. Further south in Torrington, the Berkshire has the best pizza, not even close.
 
Papa John's is terrible, I used to like Sbarro's when I was a teen but I've heard it isn't good anymore, can't vouch for it because I haven't had it in years, also thought I heard the company went belly-up. My favorite all-time chain pizza is Papa Gino's, it's another pizza I have 't had in years but I remember it being legitimately good at one time.

Never really liked the Berkshire's pizza but I love the place. Cool old building with the best homemade salad dressing, also used to get a bowl of chili and a hamburger grinder, good memories at that place. I always used to get my pizza from Anthony's in Torrington.

Anthony's is good, as is Roma's Brick Fired Pizza. The Berk is the only Greek style that I like, having grown up in the Bronx on NY style pizza. While attending UConn in Torrington, I had a history professor who used to periodically hold class at the Berkshire. He was a cool old hippie who once played with The Byrds.
