Same, when I was a kid it had a rep for being kind of dumpy. I visited a couple of summers ago for the day and was surprised how nice it is. The main drag goes on forever, nice wide sidewalks, restaurants everywhere.
I wonder if it's the "Hamilton" effect?

I was surprised to see Middletown is so nice. I live 7 hours away but grew up in New Haven near Foxon, so we took the back way to campus (i.e. Northford). Nice charming Main Street along the river. Daughter already scoped out the Asian food places on Main. What's your favorite? (This is the longest pizza thread on earth so it's allowed).
Asian is probably what we go out for the least (much more likely to get as takeout when we don't wanna cook), but Typhoon Thai, Hachi Japanese, Niuda noodles and the Tibetan place are all solid.

Some overall favorites
  • Celtic Cavern: Downstairs gastropub vibe with awesome pub food. Bacon burger is amazing and has won best burger in the state type awards
  • Eli Cannon's: The Middletown standard. Beer selection/bar food, awesome outdoor area (they opened a place called Tate's on the water I haven't gotten to yet)
  • Harrie's Jailhouse: On South Main Street, but really cool place. It's an old jailhouse turned into a really cool restaurant with really good cocktails. Great outdoor area.
  • ION is a great vegetarian place (my wife is vegetarian and it's a birthday staple for her) if your daughter likes that.
  • Osa. Local/American food. Same owners as Krust
  • Perkatory for coffee etc.
Could really go on with a bunch more too

Thanks. Marking all this down!

Cool, you can get a Jack's or Tombstone for $3. You love grocery store pizza, most people love pizza from their favorite pizza restaurants.

You can also get Lunchables for cheaper than you can get a grinder from an excellent Italian deli.
You are wrong on this IMO with plenty of disappointment I have personally tasted, recently Ernie’s, but Detroit style Motor City frozen also from Costco is pretty good. So go ahead and keep buying those $30-$40 pizzas because these places that pay about $3 for the ingredients per pie are just loving you, as they buy their second homes and boats.
I expected to be ripped on this and I never said there weren’t good pizzas out there but IMO the cost differential is extreme and not worth it.
We have numerous complaints from people here getting medium pies for $25 and up and these shops are simply taking major advantage of people.
I just prefer to make my own mostly now and in Florida you can buy the fresh dough rolled out already in refrigerated section of Publix. In Ct. Not that I am aware.
One other thing. People are quite passionate about pizza and it has been said I should be banned from this thread, burned at the stake or something to that effect but I wish to point out that another thread opened today asking recommendations for great Italian restaurants. And some really good ones are endorsed but a couple of people have endorsed Olive Garden in that thread. Any talk of banning for their likes should start right there IMO, right?

I'm wrong? It sure sounds like you love grocery store pizza.

I even gave you cheaper grocery store pizza options than what you're pushing. You're paying for the Detroit Motor City pizza people so they can buy castles and countries.

My options are high quality, both of them were better than Pepis and Ernie’s. Tell me this doesn’t look good.

A nice American company

Back in New Haven for a big Easter gathering. The rest of the family convinced us to go to Pepe’s even though I was telling them we went to Pepe’s 4x over the last couple of years and each time the pizza was thick, doughy and flavorless. But we went with a big group (2 tables, 15 of us). We ordered 6 pizzas and they were as good as the old days. Perfectly cooked, flavorful crust, fantastic. It brought all of us back. By the way, last night we ate at Gioa across the street. My god, fantastic authentic Italian cooking! Excellent

Anyone try Zephyrs pizza in West Hartford? They make a killer hot pastrami sandwich. Would highly recommend. Best I’ve had around here. Pizza looks good too.

Pizza Garden in Hartford is better than Zephyr's and has killer chopped Philly cheese sandwiches. All around, definitely a notch better than Zephyrs.

What I would give to have a Bacco’s pizza… it’s was a damn fine pie…
Try Mario’s on Watertown Ave. it is as close to Bacco’s as you’re going to get. Mario made pizza for Bacco’s for at least 20 years before open his own place. He took Bacco’s recipe and half his employees with him. Mario passed away a few years ago but the head pizza maker used to work at Bacco’s.

With that said, pizza quality can vary based on who makes the pizza.

Proto's Pizza - Denver

Found a "New Haven" style pizza place in Denver. Owner is from Brooklyn, but says he used to drive into New Haven regularly for the pies. Legit thin crust with char. Way too many varieties on the menu to be true New Haven, but definitely better than the Denver style pies you find everywhere else in town...

"Outside of Connecticut, there are 176 pizza places in 36 states and 11 countries presently making New Haven-style pizza..."

I don't get to CT often and therefore don't eat good pizza often. My last trip to CT I had Alexia's in South Windsor for the first time. It was a good pizza. Better that what I can find in the mountains of NC, but probably an average pie to a CT resident.

Nice to see Middletown getting some love in here :) I got y'all on recs as well but it looks like @Kemba Time's got you covered.

For Asian food I do tend to go outside of Middletown generally to Ginza, Angry Tofu, Kaliubon, Song+Shu, etc. However Typhoon, Hachi, Niuda, Prince House Poke are all solid choices for Middletown. Vietnamese Pho 170 is decent, but Pho & Grill in Cromwell is better.

As Arnie so eloquently put it...

Lorenzo's II just opened on Route 80 in Guilford. An offshoot of Lorenzo's in West Haven. Just brought home a small mozz with mushrooms and sausage. So damned good.

Vero Cucino Rustico is really, really freaking good.

Too many good pizza places in CT! some should set up in pizza desert New Hampshire, especially Serah Williams corner (around Keene) where a “friend” lives.
