ya'll are crazy. Reibe looked great for a freshman in an exhibition game that is basically a scrimmage. Better than I thought he would. He missed a few gimmes but that's normal for a freshman.
I really wanted to see Demary play and was bummed he and Tarris had to sit but it was great to see Reibe and Smith get a lot of run. Smith is legit. He defends hard, can score, passes well. With Demary at point and Smith off the bench they will be a menace. I was impressed with Millender and Koroma.
Cannot say enough about what I thought I saw about Smith's game.

He is really a bit of a pest.

I like that about any of our guys.

He missed a couple finishable shots - but he had two and ones, one while a guy was riding him like a horse. The other was a pretty nice soft finish while absorbing contact.

With freshmen as they adapt, you always like to see flashes of what they can do and give them time to develop more consistency. He just needs to get used to new smaller “scoring windows” and get his shots off without rushing … and those misses will become makes.
I might add, those and-ones were converted.

I bet Millender is gonna wind up averaging ~5mpg this year with consistent appearances. He’s the 10th man with Koroma getting spot minutes if Reed and Reibe have foul trouble or it’s a blowout. Idk how many deep that counts as, 10,11,9.5?
I get the logic, but I'd take the under on any of those 3 numbers. There's just not enough minutes to go around to our best players that way. No team in the country is running 11 man rotations

One of the benefits to shooting lots of threes via analytics is getting the long O rebound, yet we don’t do this all too well as a team, do we?
We do this incredibly well under Dan Hurley

Why must we equate "big" with "athletic". There are plenty of skinny athletic guys. Mullins doesn't look strong, but the minute he moves the athleticism is clear.
He doesn't look strong, but like the "sneaky athletic" term thrown around, I think he is "sneaky strong" too. Never looked like he shied away from physical play and never looked overwhelmed physically.

And I highly doubt Millender is playing 5 mpg. Unless there are long term injuries and I don't even want to think about that!
It's nice to have him in case of disaster but he's a practice guy.

We're going to rely heavily on Silas, Malachi, Solo, Braylon, AK, and Tarris.

Reibe to give Tarris a break, if/when Tarris gets into foul trouble but it will be an uneven split and not like the 20/20 split we saw last season with Samson and Tarris.

Ross and Jaylin will both get lots of opportunities and they should both be in the rotation to some extent but one of them will likely separate themselves and have the larger role.

I doubt Koroma and Furphy will consistently be in the rotation but there's always injuries and foul trouble so they will get some minutes.

I expect it to be a 9 man rotation like it always is with 6 guys getting the majority of the minutes.

I suspect there may be growing pains with Reibe (as expected with pretty much any freshman, especially a freshman big) and Koroma will get run. He’s undersized but athletic and seems to have good hedging/switchability. Also, we kinda know that Tarris and Reibe will likely be in foul trouble somewhat often.

The Ross/Stewart separation will be an interesting dynamic to watch. I agree with you here. In this lineup, Ross brings something to the team that Stew doesn't, perimeter defense. Not sure what Stew compliments this roster with other than just being depth.

When talking about Reibe, remember, Clingan was a little shaky in the beginning too. Reibe isn't and won't be the imposing defensive force Clingan was, but he already has better footwork and offensive instinct than Clingan did, especially early on.
Not worried about Reibe at all - true frosh bigs take some time to figure it out after just being bigger than everyone for years. If there is ever a profile you need to give some time to watch play out, it's his. Do hope he becomes stronger around the rim on both sides with time. In Hurley's system, would really prefer a force in the paint vs a stretch 5.

Gonna be interesting to see the Reed matchup against Illinois for that reason.

Loved the Turk coming in and swatting one with force.

Tarris as a fouling machine is overstated on this board. He fouled less than Adama did his first season here and he will be our most dominant player and our biggest mismatch player. I expect him to get 28 minutes or so.

Because when he’s standing out there on the court, he looks like a small unathletic little kid.

But then you watch him at game speed, and it’s clear he’s athletic. Sneaky athleticism. Duh
Athleticism is usually a combination of being bigger, faster, stronger, and jumping ability.

I think Mullins has 1 of those 4 qualities for his position and that’s the jumping. And because he doesn’t have the other 3 it’s surprising when he can jump like that lol.

He's incredibly fast/quick.

Loved the Rzezon swat too. I mean who else has a 4th string 7 footer?

If you recruited/developed players that have an expectation to shoot 40%+ on clean-look/in-flow 3's...when they get one, they HAVE to take it. It's as simple as that. Expectation on that shot long-term is 1.2 pts.

Deliberately passing that look up because "we take too many 3's", to only potentially get a 2pt look later on in the shot clock with perhaps 60% make probability ends up only netting you the same 1.2pt expectation. At best.

I generally disagree with blind adherence to deep-dive subtle analytics, but the above is about as basic kindergarten game theory logic as it gets.
I will never be a believer in the 3s > 2s offensive philosophy as there’s so much context that these numbers don’t calculate.

Basketball is best played inside out. The 3s aren’t going anywhere, would like to see more intentionally attacking the rim or spots on the court.

That problem will naturally fix itself with Silas and Reed back though.

Sure, but he’s gonna be playing bigger minutes and we foul a lot as a team. And Reibe will likely foul a lot himself

I think he’s quicker than he is fast.

Players like Boatright, Kemba, and Andre were fast.

Guys like Shabazz, Hawkins, and Mullins imo are more quick.
It doesn't matter. He's basketball fast. Straight line speed doesn't really matter. I do think he's going to foul a lot though. His quickness and jumping means that for a lot of SFs, the play is to take him inside and run him over. If he was guarding SGs more often he'd be in a better situation.

Good news is, that's fine. Between Stewart and Ross we can cover that position without much difficulty.

Starting to sound like we're going to have 7 guys getting starter level minutes, with whichever 2 of Smith, Mullins, Stewart are coming off the bench

The two concepts aren't mutually exclusive. The best looks from deep usually come after the ball has gone into the paint, either by way of dribble penetration or an entry pass. You can play inside out and still craft your offense around getting open looks from 3.

I agree but that’s not what we did yesterday. Seemed like a lot of our 3s came off passes from the perimeter or pick and rolls where we pulled it.

Not a lot of penetrating to create those.
