As usual someone beat me to it. Here is the top 10 for the USA Today poll. Basically the same schools, just in a different order.

South Carolina (7-4) [#64 RPI] {warrennolan.com} won't relinquish the #25 spot without a fight. These two teams are worthy to that lofty #25 spot, Iowa St (9-2) [#9 RPI] and Florida St (11-1) [#21 RPI].

The Gamecocks have begun a winning streak, so they will steadily move up from that 25 spot.

Quite the shakeup in AP rankings 4-10:
  • Mississippi State drops 4 spots from #4 to #8 after losing to Oregon.
  • Oregon jumps 2 spots from #7 to #5.
  • Stanford jumps 2 spots from #8 to #6 after beating Baylor.
  • Baylor drops 1 spot from #6 to #7.
  • NC State and Tennessee switch spots, with NC State moving to #9 and Tennessee falling to #10.
Meanwhile, Maryland continues to creep up by virtue of not losing (on its weak schedule). Now up to #4.

Wouldn't be shocked if Maryland runs the table and ends up at #2 or 3 by tournament time but nets a 3 seed.

I had the same exact thought. I think if Iowa can grab a #3 or #4 seed and Maryland goes undefeated, they'll probably be a #2 seed. Hard to see them as a #1, though, with that schedule.

Agreed that a 2 seed seems more likely than 3 if they run the table. I'm guessing theyll slip up along the way and have 1-2 losses by tournament time. Iowa is going to be tough with Gustafson and a team like MSU could trip them up too. Wish they'd schedule tougher so we could get a better gage on MD, and also get a couple more top 10 matchups.

How many times in the past several years has it been "new season, same story"? Maryland dominates its inferior schedule and looks veeeewy scaaaaaawy — and then gets a #2 or #3 seed due to precisely the weak schedule that gives an exaggerated impression of how good they are.

A couple of those years they played UCONN and actually hung with UCONN better than anyone else in the nation (2016 and 2017)...they likely would've won games against top 5-10 teams and earned a #1 seed had they scheduled tougher from the on set. Or even if they scheduled more games against teams in the 26-50 range rather than loading up on cupcakes, they probably would've been a #1 seed during those years.

I seem to recall that in Stewie-Moriah-Tuck's senior year, they were by far the team that hung closest to UConn. Something like a 4-point game where Chong hit the dagger 3 down the stretch. But MD failed to score any high-quality wins and lost twice to Ohio State. Everyone was up in arms when they were given a #2 seed, but then they were shocked on their home floor by Washington in the 2nd round.

To be fair they did have South Carolina and Georgia on their non conference schedule. However, both of those teams have badly underperformed expectations which will hurt Maryland’s model driven ratings down the road.

I’m not understanding the perception that the Big Ten is such a cakewalk conference. This one site has Maryland losing 6 games in the conference schedule. It’s not like the AAC where UConn breezes through it.

You're right, not the same as the AAC. But for a team that should be vying for a #1 seed, it doesn't offer any top-10 wins like the Pac-12 or ACC do.

reminder that the committee will release mid-season rankings, so we will get an early sense of how much MD is penalized

at least I assume the committee is still doing that

And then MD gets all upset with the Selection Committee for giving them a worse seed than they believe they deserve.

Did anybody post the latest AP poll yet?

UConn up to #4
MSST up to #5
ND drops two spots

STAN climbs one spot after getting thumped. That’s interesting.

Ha, I think it got a bit overshadowed by the anticipation of tonight's top 16 preview.

Well, Stanford did also beat Oregon State, which was a higher-ranked team.
Maryland leapfrogs Marquette and Oregon State from #10 to #7. That's kinda weird.
NC State falls from #9 to #12.
Miami moves from #25 to #20.
South Dakota enters the top 25 for the first time.

Miami ahead of FSU, that is what a win over ND will do, despite the head to head in FSUs favor.
