ACC options

Aug 31st is one of those rare moments where we get to showcase our upgraded football program— to the Big12 gurus who badmouthed our football, to the ACC who are trying to figure out the future, to the media who perennially love to doubt us—-and to our own skeptical fanbase.
Take the field with confidence and take the fight to NCState on the 31st and there’ll be lots more folks talking about the Husky renaissance. It’s all right there before us. Lots of ACC and Big12 eyeballs will be watching.

Which of these two headlines will we be reading after the game?

“UConn does little to dispel the reluctance of the Big12 to invite them to the party and confirms the ACC’s long held perception as they get dismantled by NCSt 42-6”
OR
”UConn shows the doubters why they were high on Bret Yormark’s Big12 wishlist and should be on the ACC’s, by upending NC St with a relentless attack for all 4 quarters, in a surprising 36-21 victory.“

The extra large effort they have been making about attendance lends some creditability to the notion that this game means a lot more than usual.

It’s does FSU - Tennesse become more valuable enough than the Arkansas - Tennessee game that would’ve been in that slot compared to the drop in value from the FSU - Wake vs. Cuse - Wake game they now have for that slot.

FSU makes “worthless” ACC content airable. While they boost the SEC content is it by enough to overcome the cost. Similarly what’s more valuable to ESPNs massive outlay for the playoff? FSU as the 10-2 ACC champions seeded 4th or as a 8-4 at large 8th seed slated for a second round rematch with #1 Alabama (if they win). Especially if that alternative involves a 9-3 Pitt reaching the tournament now as ACC champ blocking an at large bid to Tennessee. (So FSU & Tennessee vs. Pitt & FSU in the playoff)

FSU arguably has much more value to ESPN as the big dawg in the ACC then as a member (say upper class) in the SEC (even before you factor the pro rata costs involved in each deal). I just don’t see a lot of reason for ESPN to bend over backwards to move FSU or anyone else from the ACC before 2036 (I guess the only argument would be a world where they’re lost to the Big Ten and FOX if they don’t match the deal).

In these new mega conferences there will be a lot of 500 to sub-500 teams. I’m not sure parity makes alumni happy.
 
NC State was predicted in the preseason ACC poll to finish 4th in conference.

Vegas odds have UConn +15.

An upset would set up the Huskies for a good season...

BC is predicted to come in as next to last in ACC and Cuse as #10.

We hear the same story all the time: Why is it always UConn has to win this game to get to a power conference! ( Everyone thought if UConn beat Louisville under coach P they would get the ACC nod.) Well, UConn won that game, but lost the battle for ACC admission. UConn has to have great attendance! UConn had a easy path in the NCAA tourney! Yet Cal and Colorado, two crummy athletic programs are desirable? Forget about blockade by BC, FSU, Clemson and ESPN. Forget about the 4 corner schools and the Big 12. Notre Dame gets AAU status without merit. Cal and SMU considered for ACC membership. Nothing makes sense anymore.
Hopefully UConn will get off to a great start this football season, and I hope they can at least keep it close.

I know right? If only the stuff could be decided on the field. I mean I wish we had an opportunity to play Louisville head-to-head right before the ACC made the decision on which school should replace Maryland. A win back then could've changed everything!

That win against Louisville in 2012 is sort of a half story...

True, UConn upset an 11 win Louisville....but UConn went on to have a losing season while Louisville went on to beat the 11 win Gators in the Sugar Bowl....

IMHO, Consistent winning seasons and wins over regarded teams will bring the Huskies football respect.
 
UConn has had some bad luck in CR...

ACC....Shalala already had the committment to add BC and Syracuse as a requirement for Miami to accept an ACC bid. Louisville looked pretty good and was in danger of being taken by the Big 12.

Big 12....The implosian of the Pac torpedoed UConn's chance as #14...

Louisville wasn't in danger of being taken by the B12 since they picked WVU already. UConn was blocked by FSU and Clemson. It is as simple as that.

Your comment about ND is spot on! 35 years of a title drought and everyone kisses their ass. They run roughshod over their ACC part time conference mates. No wonder FSU and Clemson want out...

Maybe the thought was that UConn would be there if they wanted to go after UConn in the future.

That's always been the thought on UConn. Nobody else will take them, and if the ACC finally decided that there was a reason to add them, they would be available.

I don’t see the ACC getting poached for the next ten years. FSU is making themselves less attractive to both the B1G & SEC. I highly doubt Florida, UGA, South Carolina and the lower tier teams will want either FSU or Clemson. They don’t need another automatic loss and a redundancy of markets.

The B1G studied 10 schools, two of which were Oregon & Washington. The five ACC teams were UNC, Duke, UVA, GT & Miami. All are AAU schools. The other 3 were Cal, Stanford & Utah.

If the B1G and SEC decide in the future, 2036, to grow to 24 teams the remaining ACC teams will all join the B12. A lot depends on the money offered by the networks in 2031.

The ACC is next on the clock. No way FSU and Clemson stay until the end of the GOR. To think otherwise means you’re a fan of Syracuse or BC or Wake and are desperate to hold on to your spot in. P4 conference while it still exists.

Yes they were. It was definitely on the radar and was a major reason they took Louisville over UConn. They knew they could get us later, and they were right.

Big XII is next on the clock.

Last year the entire AAC was had for $90 million. Now Cincy, Central Florida, and Houston make more than that. Not to mention the state of Utah getting $60 million. The next contract cycle will not be kind to the Big XII. The top four go to the ACC, and then five years later the top of the ACC leaves. That’s likely where this ends, with the ACC at #3 with a mishmash of ACC and Big XII schools.

Even if the next B12 contract is bad, would a school really jump to the ACC knowing that in <5 years you'd be left in a conference with BC, Syracuse, Wake Forest, and not much else?
