ACC Off-Season

Some will roll their eyes when I say this, but the ACC team that I've been most impressed by in the offseason is Virginia Tech. Megan Thee Duffy was able to secure three really good assistants (all three starred in the ACC as players while two of them have ACC head coaching experience) and convinced "the leftovers" to not only stick around but help shape the culture of the program. Then, she was able to cobble together a decent recruiting class at the last minute. What could have been a disaster looks more like a competent bubble-esque squad. If they finish Top 6, then she should be ACC COY in a landslide.

True, but I will be interested. Duffy flew under my radar, but I just happened to read a piece on her that was very positive.

I just did my annual spreadsheet of coaches and the ACC's 4 new coaches is the most (the Big 12 has no new coaches). Of them, I would expect Kate Paye to carry on the legacy, Duffy to perform well, also Collup at Miami, but not sure what the future holds for Clemson.

Tell me more. I’ve not heard about this likely commitment.
It's just a gut feeling on my part. Her finalists include Louisville, Iowa, Illinois, North Carolina, and Miami. She has made her official visits to all 5 and is close to announcing her decision (probably this weekend). Ranked #59 by espn hg she is a 6'3" forward who plays for the Brazil national team and will be playing her final year of hs at IMG Academy in Florida.

The media doesn't play the games, correct? Or am I missing something?

Hey, I just report the news.

The media cracks me up ...how are we 3rd in the ACC with one player on the all conference list? I the past two-three years, we are 2nd only to ND in ACC wins...and have had 1 first team player and 1 second team player out of 40 players.
We must win with fairy dust 'cause we haven't won coach of the year either...lololol

Over the last 2 years Duke is 3rd behind VT and ND in conference wins. Over the last 3 years they drop considerably falling behind VT, ND, Louisville, NC State, UNC and FSU.

I get that everyone is looking for recognition and perhaps Duke has been snubbed somewhere. 2 years ago Celeste Taylor was all defensive team, defensive player of the year and 1st team all conference and Lawson was 2nd in voting for coach of the year. Last season Duke had Okananwa as the 6th player of the year (State might have argued for Zoe Brooks), Okananwa made the all freshman team, Richardson was 2nd team all conference.

This year they bumped Richardson to pre season 1st team and have Fournier as the top incoming freshman to watch.

The thing is for the preseason selections we are talking about 10 players getting picked and there are now 18 teams. Notre Dame fans think they deserve 4 and got 3 (King was first team last year and not pre season this year, Westbeld was 2nd team last year, not pre season this year). Tonnie Morgan and Kara Dunn were both 2nd team all conference last year for GT and neither preseason selections this year.

The ACC has a lot of talent. Louisville is picked 4th and has no one one the pre season team. I'm having a hard time looking at that list of 10 and seeing who should come off and I can think of 5 or 6 players not on it that have arguments to be on it.

I know you meant no harm, but you got me riled up again thinking of the 22-23 coach of the year voting. Apparently a lot of the media indulges in crack cocaine every so often.

Well off to jersey mike's for a heated up #12.... Hopefully that will calm me down.

Oh no I'm not looking for more recognition. I'm just pointing out the irony of the voting. I disagree completely with the metrics used for such things. It is as much a popularity contest as it is an actual accounting of talent. I feel the same about the AP polls and Coaches polls. I don't think anyone should pay any attention to them. Those awards don't really help with anything during or after college anyway.

Can someone clarify the roster size for me regarding Duke specifically. It's my understanding that 15 scholarship players is the maximum. Duke has 16 on their current roster and I doubt any of them are walk-ons.

Unless players transfer out next year they will lose a maximum of 2 players to graduation and already have 1 player committed for 2025. That brings them back to 15 so how is it that they can still have offers out there for more 2025 recruits? Are they going to "suggest" a player transfer out in order to make space for a higher ranked recruit coming in ? What if a top player wants to transfer in after this season ? Do you tell them no ?

Two walk ons, 14 on scholarship. Lose Richardson at the end of the year. 13 + Skinner for 25-26 season. 1 scholarship remaining.

I'd be surprised if 1 or 2 don't transfer at the end of this year. We'll have to see how the year unfolds and who gets the most playing time.

Thanks everybody for the clarifications regarding Duke. That's why I love the boards here.
Here's another clarification we need from @triaddukefan with Duke picked to finish 3rd this year, will they once again under-achieve or will they at least still finish ahead of dreaded NC? My vote is for neither to happen-they finish lower than 3rd and behind NC. mostly to just see his reaction....

Bad mojo continues for the lady Packs offseason. Aziaha James was on crutches during the “Meet the Pack” basketball event. Supposedly just being extra cautious. Wes Moore was vague but did say starting Center Caitlyn Weimar was about to undergo hip surgery and had a long road ahead for recovery.

Sounds like she’s out for at least 2 months if not the season if I’m guessing. James perhaps is more of a week to week deal. The Pack faces SCar super early in the season - hopefully she’s back and 100% by then.

The door is open for international Freshman Tilda Trygger to grab a starting role with Weimar out.

Syracuse plays an exhibition game (free admission) tonight against Daemen (D2 school from Amherst, NY). I will be going for the first half mostly just to see the new seating arrangement for the JMA Dome -- I'm now a season tix holder with courtside seats so I want to see if it was worth the money.

Should be an absolute blowout but I will report back if anything interesting happens.

To update: Syracuse put the beat down on Daemen, winning 90-50. It was clearly an unequal match from the start.

Last year Syracuse had a bad habit of starting off ice cold in Q1. No such troubles this game. I thought they had a fairly balanced scoring from outside, mid-range, and in the paint. You can definitely see the improvement in offensive play with this being year 3 of Coach Jack. It’s not elite, yet, but definitely improved. And they still have that scrappiness. But a lot of missed bunnies and some weak hands in the 1st half; could just be shaking off the rust. Defense was fine, though obviously it’s difficult to judge against this opponent. We will see how things evolve going forward.

There were some new faces I didn’t recognize. My seats were near the radio play caller and he mentioned that Coach Jack has the pull to bring P4 transfers — this was about sophomore (G) Velez, who came from LSU. She will make an impact. There is also grad student Varejão (C) from Michigan.

Freshmen Schmitt (G) and Scott (F) will also be ones to watch. Schmitt is only 5’5” but she was a starter for this game and showed confidence running the offense.

Woolley, a senior, did not play this game. I asked around but did not hear about any injuries or anything. She was on the bench in warmups. (I haven’t looked online for any info, so I don’t have any opinions. They probably didn’t feel she had to play, it was definitely a game for the underclassmen.)

Interesting note: there are 4 international players on this team and 3 are from Australia. Syracuse really has a pipeline to Aussie talent. I am curious to see how well they all gel together.

I think there is a lot of potential for Syracuse this year, even though they lost their dynamic scorer in Fair. But it will depend on how well they are able to keep improving throughout the year and maintain said balanced scoring and scrappiness.

Anyway that’s all I can remember off the top of my head. Probably a couple hundred showed up for the game.

Unless coach McCallie is coming back to be the head coach, we ain't underachieving. Our ceiling is 2nd place., the floor is 4th.

If we finish behind Chapel Hill, the day after the end of the conference season, I'll eat Brussel sprouts for breakfast, lunch and dinner

Wasn't televised but looks like the backcourt did what people expected. No Sonia Citron it appears, and they only played like 7. Hope ND is healthier this year than they were last year.
