ACC Big East merger

Other dominos will learn to fly before this happens.

You guys realize that this is just two old basketball coaches throwing stuff against the wall, right? That it’s not something that is actually happening?
Not a new idea, just bringing it back to the table. What other card does the ACC or Big East have? ACC brings in the UHawaii to tap the Island Market and Somoan recruiting hotbeds?

Neither is going to be relevant if they sit on their thumbs.

If you think the show is already over and UConn has already lost, then why do you care? Does it make you upset that anyone else thinks there is at least a some percentage chance UConn makes it out of this?

Personally, I have been pretty impressed by UConn's ability to keep kicking the can down the road, hoping for a break, since 2003.

-> The school reported $105,579,698 in revenue and $100,969,851 in expenses for fiscal year 2024, when it continued to operate at levels required to compete nationally across the board despite living outside the lucrative world of power conferences.

The Huskies, as a member of the Big East in basketball and most sports, reported $2.2 million in media rights revenue, $2.91 in NCAA distributions and $5.63 million in non-media conference distributions. The sum of these figures can be 10 times larger for members of power conferences. <-

Do you ever tire of not making sense?

The press release is out, but has anyone seen the actual report?

I don’t think this happens but who thought Cal would be in the ACC? But I would not be too quick to write off ACC basketball. They are going through an adjustment after having 3 Hall of Fame coaches all retire in a 2-3 year period. They also lost several others in the same period. Between Roy Williams, K, Boehiem, and Bennett they had guys who had won 10 national championships. Add in a couple of other good coaches who also left, Laranaga, the Notre Dame coach, among them and it is easy to see they are going through an adjustment not unlike UConn after Calhoun or Villanova now. Sometimes it takes a bit to land the right guy. If every coach was as good as Roy or K, they wouldn’t be hall of famers.

It is possible, of course, that they won’t get it right. Or not for many years. But I hear that UNC is running out of patience and a year without a bid could bring change to Chapel Hill. I suspect the Orange won’t wait too much longer. I think adding UConn would also help to speed this adjustment!

I would. It’s well beyond that. Top young coaches will follow the money trail, for themselves and recruiting. No one wants to move to downtown Detroit when they can live in Miami.

This came up on the Cooper Flagg thread, but it's still crazy how bad the ACC has gotten. I know Louisville is decent again, but the dregs are just so lifeless. No wonder they want to shake things up
I agree and doesn't it seem more likely that the ACC will just die and the better athletic schools will just get absorbed into the other P4 conferences. I also agree that the above posting on Coach K's being a part of the Tobacco Road crowd and the failure of them to get Uconn over the hump back then. One more thought: all of this conjecture being brought up by the Big Money interests on sports realignment could have a whole new outlook if the economy takes a severe downward trajectory which is well within the realm of possibility. But that's a different story for another day.

Not too long ago I thought the ACC would come crashing down. But there is nowhere for Clemson, FSU etc to go. Their rhetoric has dialed back significantly since they now know that nobody really wants them. UNC is actually the one the P2 actually could covet.

Far down the line when the GoR expires maybe the whole thing will blow up. Maybe the ACC knows that and they will do something proactive about it.

I just know that that these conferences and schools make terrible decisions. So we are left predicting which bad decision will be made next.

My question is that if ESPN was willing to pay up for UConn in the Big 12, then why wouldn’t they be willing to do the same thing for UConn in the ACC?

I don't think that might be the problem as much as the ACC would want UConn to take none of that money or very little of it in order to distribute more money to existing members. They have constantly referred to UConn as "another mouth to feed". That could only be interpreted as "if they're not going to increase the overall pie" why bring them in?"

It's basically why they took SMU and the west coast teams....they got the pro rata from ESPN, kept half of it from Cal and Stanford and all of SMU's. They then get a carriage bump from the ACC Net in those markets.

That last bit comes at a cost.

The ACC needs games in all windows now for the west coast - that means 7 pm EST, 9 pm EST and 11 pm EST. The problem is that they do not have enough west coast games to fill those windows, so now someone has to play 9 pm games on the east coast.

Last night, Pitt-FSU ended at 11:35 pm.

I believe there was also a push from some ACC presidents that had prior academic ties to Stanford and Cal. To me, they bring nothing to the ACC athletically. More like BC than Duke or NC.

Good point about the west coast time slots. I was wondering why that game was on so late last night.

I posted on this board as soon as FSU and Clemson started grumbling that UConn should offer to take a half share and have the rest distributed to existing members and was told that was ridiculous. Well since then the 3 additions you mentioned really changed the game for UConn joining the ACC. There is something to being 1st, that gets lost to most.

What there was a national outcry from talking heads saying that the "ACC should throw Cal and Stanford and lifeline." Why they shat OSU and Wazzou like that I'll never know.

If they are willing to pay for UConn then we are accretive or at least neutral.

They have our number and info. It’s clear that UConn is putting it’s effort somewhere else.

Yesterday’s messaging was pretty strategic.

Because OSU and Wazzou don’t have any influence. Kind of like how we didn’t.

I think this is all moot. Here's my prediction.....

The BiG and SEC will soon take some combination of UNC, Virginia, FSU, Clemson (maybe) and Kansas (maybe). That throws the ACC up in the air and raises the bigger question of whether the Big12 and ACC can even compete with the BiG and SEC financially for talent. Depending on answer to that question it could separate the P2 from everyone else.

The next logical step from that is how institutions such as Miss. State sit at the table. I think I know where that ultimately ends....

By soon do you mean 2036?

What would the Big Ten do with Kansas?

The ACC is what it will be for the next decade or so. Maybe someone joins but no one is leaving….you’ll note that FSU and Clemson have gotten pretty quiet.

The SEC and Big 10 are more likely to go after each other than the ACC or Big 12. The NFL and NBA, who have a track record of ruthlessness with competitors (especially the NFL) are waiting for the top tier to get concentrated, then they will destroy it.

College sports is at the tail end of its golden age. There is a great line at the beginning of Casino that is relevant. (Replace “street guys” with “college presidents”)

But in the end, we ****ed it all up. It should have been so sweet too. But it turned out to be the last time street guys like us were ever given anything that ****ing valuable again.

OSU and WSU are very expendable non Flag chips .
Stanford is the the best academic school playing a top athleteic schedule with incredibly influential alumni and a huge endowment . iIts a world renowned University
Cal is considered the top or among the top public universities in the US again with an influential larger alumni base . The flagship school of the biggest state in the country
They are also located in reasonable driving distance to a major international airport .
Multiply direct flights from the Esst Coast
OSU and WSU lesser schools that are off the beaten path .
SMU is serviced by one of the biggest Air hubs in the US and again has a wealthy and supportive alumna bas. They’re a decent academic school who unfortunately had a Stigma attached to them by paying players . You could say they were ahead of their time.

This is where the ACC and Big 12 are lost and perhaps to no fault of their own. Either they don't know what they want to be or haven't realized yet that they can't be the P2. There are no programs left that will bring their conferences enough revenue to come close to competing with the P2. They are counting nickels and dimes and singles when the P2 are counting hundies.

So what else is there? Competing on the field and court. Here again there aren't any football programs left which make much of a dent in the bank account or on the field. Basketball, well clearly there is UConn and a few other programs such as Nova, Marquette, Gonzaga and some others that compete on the court. Big 12 and ACC could improve on court performance but only care about their nickels and dimes. Both are stuck in the middle and will try to tread water as long as possible, but the P2 carriers are sailing away. Taking in more basketball programs might help save college basketball.

Will either the Big Ten or SEC fire a shot across the other's bow?

The press release is out, but has anyone seen the actual report?
I believe there was a link to it in the press release, but I haven't looked at it yet. if I recall correctly, though, in past years that link has been to a series of infographics rather than an actual report.
