2025 Transfer Portal - UConn Interest Only

Or maybe Alex waits another week and we miss the Watts train along with every other 3/4 that’s been available
It’s getting borderline absurd at this point, in particular after that cryptic IG post he put up a week ago. It’s three weeks post our last game, you’d think some of these things would have been thought out prior to end of season. I’m honestly not sure what is taking so long.

I'm sure part of it has to do with the CBB phenomenon that shares its name with the soccer/football term for zero.

That being said, I am sure the staff have reached out to 3/4 players they are interested in and have explained the situation. That doesn't mean that we haven't/aren't going to lose really good potential portal additions in the meantime, but I doubt the staff is just doing nothing as far as expressing interest to 3/4 players. It's likely been done on the DL.

Maybe because it's a really difficult decision. And the coaching staff is talking to him every day, so even if we're in the dark they're not. If he's saying he's leaning towards leaving they can and I'm sure have been reaching out to guys in the portal. They're not going to be blindsided by his decision

No need to worry - if Alex departs there'll be a handful of guys that reach out to us to fill that opening. One will be selected, his name will be in the portal (maybe as do not contact), and presto/a few days later we'll have our 4-man. That's the new reality.

It’s not Aaron Rodgers level hemming and hawing but it’s starting to approach that. I get it’s a big decision, but hopefully it’s made very soon.

Watts is quite a unique player and would love to have him here, but not keeping my hopes up.

Watts was split between the 4 and the 3 at Washington State, but also was the team's main backup PG, playing 25% of their PG minutes.

He doesn't seem like he'd move cross-country, but what do I know - being that he's a big body that plays with versatility throughout the forward spots, he's almost perfect for our needs next year.

Dude looks like a Tech type player.
You mean a tough as nails dawg, something we severely lack? Silas may offer some of that.

Also don’t think the presto thing is ideal - no two players are alike and the more we wait the more options pass. I like options, nor restrictions. Let’s go already.

Kind of indicative of his year where he got stuck in his own head for the better part of the BE season.

If at the time AK committed here we were told he would be a starter, averaging close to 30 minutes a game, on two national championship teams we would have been thrilled.

If he feels he needs an additional week, two weeks, whatever to decide, he's earned that privilege.

You guys are being really weird
Ready to get weirder?

Good size, can drive, shoot and post up. He can actually play the PF in our system and be pretty effective on offense. I didn’t see anything on defense though. Can he block shots and keep his man in front of him? He looks like a 3-4 but with a nice offensive game from either spot.
Agree with Watts from Washington State- he also has really nice footwork around the basket. His one-handed wrist dunk is very cool looking too!

Well I’d always defer to you and your deep understanding of what it’s like to decide between entering the NBA draft vs your senior year of high major d1 basketball
I get it, but it’s been 3 weeks. How long can you sit atop of the Acropolis and ponder the meaning of life until you start losing your own emotional momentum in wanting to come back? Meanwhile you leave that program in limbo. I get last year, testing the process. A majority of the thought process was likely squared away prior to the portal period.

The difference between player A and B in the portal is not meaningless, as we saw with Mahaney.

You talking about this guy? He's on his own time.

AK went through the entire process a year ago of exploring the draft. It should be an easier decision this year compared to a year ago one would think from having gone through that experience.

But that's not necessarily true. Tarris Reed Jr was in the portal for weeks with very little movement and then when our season ended he was committed within days. The staff can reach out to options before he formally announces his decision
The only challenge is that obviously those players have the uncertainty of whether AK will be here or not hanging over the decision. Other landing spots might have less uncertainty for minutes. So it’s kind of a bit of a competitive disadvantage.

If there's mutual interest, I'm all in on Watts. Good size and seems super versatile, averaging solid points (14), rebounds (7), assists (4), and stocks (1.6) while being a 50/40% scorer. AST/TO isn't great (1.3, slightly ahead of Liam) but I'm sure that's something that can be improved in a Hurley system. And still 2 more years

3 double doubles in his first 4 games last year. Triple double in late January. Played well against high major teams (11/10/4 on 50% vs Iowa, 12/3/1 on 66% vs SMU, 22/8/5 vs GTown, 15/8/3 on 40% vs Washington). Great game against a solid Boise St team (26/11/6). Also played well against the better WCC teams (averaged 18/4/5 on 50% vs Gonzaga and 15/1/5 on 48% against St Mary's, although did have 6 TOs against each of them)

As I kept researching and typing this post, I fell more and more in love with the idea. I don't care what the rotation looks like right now. I know nothing about this recruitment, but if he wants to come, we have to pounce

I get that, but we're also UConn. Guys are going to wait because it's a premier destination

Pretty sure Alex and Hurley know how to make sure we get the best player should he leave. Alex knows how this works that the team needs replacement if his skills.

Yeah good point. And I’m sure there is constant dialogue between Dan Hurley and AK, I suppose I’m just curious as to what the drag is. At this point they should have 99% of the needed info, unless Hurley is scrambling to get him more NIL. If that challenging maybe just time to push bird out of nest. The longer it goes the more it feels like time to go. You’ve kinda answered your own question. You want some conviction to come back, the energy around waffling almost seems set up for failure.
Alex and his family don't seem to be the kind that are trying to squeeze more NIL money out of UConn. I'm sure he made a decent amount last season and whatever UConn is offering for a 4th season is probably fair and acceptable. Whatever is going on with Alex's decision is fine with Hurley. I don't know why people on here get all upset he hasn't announced a decision. The staff know what is going on and I'm sure they're fine with it and are planning appropriately.

I read this post and who can doubt that it's 100% to troll you. What else could possibly explain it? Lean into it. You'll grow from the experience.
Go Alex!
