She would be GREAT at Arkansas. I’m rooting for Neighbors.
He almost had her out of high school, and I think he thought he had a shot when she transferred out of MD (she visited Arkansas then). Will the third time be the charm, or will she leave him hanging x 3?

Brenda needs to be in the hall of fame of coaches who produces elite transfers annually. It’s incredible to me

Dang I know I defend Brenda on here but seriously, why can't she keep her good players? Look at the defects from this past decade:

2011: Natasha Cloud-played as a frosh, transfers and has strong career at St. Joseph's, becomes starting PG on WNBA title team.

2015: Lexie Brown-becomes AA at Duke and WNBA player (she was an AA at Maryland)

2017: Kiara Leslie-becomes a star at NC State and first round WNBA draft pick

2017: Kiah Gillespie-becomes a star at Florida State and likely late first round/early 2nd round draft pick

2017: Destiny Slocum-NFOY, transfers and is HM AA at OSU

2017: Jenna Staiti-transfers and averages 12/6.6 per game at Georgia as a junior

2020: Shakira Austin-stud her first 2 years and transfers to 7-23 Ole Miss

2020: Taylor Mikesell-Big Ten FOY and All Big Ten, transfers after sophomore year

All but 1 are within the last 5 years, and every one of these players has been an absolute stud in college. If anyone had an All-Transfer squad, Maryland's definitely takes the cake.

Frese is a total fraud, she gets players with false promises and cannot coach at all. She has probably more assistant coach turnover than any other coach in the country. She blames the assistants for the team underachieving in the NCAA tournament. They have enough talent to make and compete in the final 4 every year, however, she has only done it once....none without Walz

Having transfers isn't always a bad thing, especially if its primarily kids on the bench who never play. Those types of transfers happen everywhere. When you have all conference starters bolting every year, to me that is a red flag.

Whats remarkable is despite their annual turnover at alarming rates, Brenda seems to haul in premier talent every recruiting class. Its just all very interesting to me.

And its a shame, I thought Maryland did a excellent job this year coaching up that roster. We saw tremendous improvement in every facet of their game before the season was canceled. Now you have two super sophomores (Mikesell and Austin) bolting. The makeup of the team next year now looks entirely different. Yes there is still a lot of talent but losing Mikesell and Austin hurts a lot. You have to wonder if Owusu or Miller transfers next the way the trend continues?

I don't think Brenda is as bad of a "coach" as people make her out to be but she is close to a failure when it comes to roster management and maintaining her players. She is usually able to absorb the losses a bit because she recruits so damn well. Imagine how good some of these teams could be if she could just keep her star players.

obviously it is not a myth about that Frese can not coach. Ask Lexie Brown, Slocum, etc....

Lol. So much is just inaccurate with this.

First off, Frese has coached twice at the Final Four without Walz. One of those times beat Jeff's team in Louisville to get there. After Walz and her championship team left, she's still maintained great success, going to 2 final fours, 5 elite 8s and consistently developing players into excellent pros. The most recent WNBA finals had 5 players from Maryland playing.

When has she ever blamed an assistant coach for her team underachieving in recent years? And her assistants this year were in their 5th and 6th year with the program....that's not crazy turnover by any means.

Lastly, did you watch Maryland at all this year? They started out horribly and massively improved throughout the season, to the point where they were a lock for a #1 seed and a favorite to get back to the Final Four. Frese made lineup changes and the team consistently improved as the year continued and was peaking at the right time. That is coaching.

You can hate her, but at least get the facts straights. Brenda’s has been to 3 final fours, 2 of them without Walz, and she has a winning record against Walz since he left. And her coaches do not leave every year. Robinson who left to go to Ole Miss was at MD for 6 years.

Can you read? I said compete, it means not getting destroyed by an undermanned Notre Dame and UConn.

Compete; Definition of competitive | Dictionary.com

If she has 5 WNBA players in the finals then she should be able to be competitive in the final 4 more than once in 15+ years.

I can see how Ole Miss was his dream school.

Good job overlooking the entire post which completely dismantles your rhetoric. No follow up other than "can you read?"

Maryland lost as a 4 seed to a 36-0 Notre Dame team. No shame in that. The next year they overachieved and got back to a Final Four and were stuck facing a 35-1 UCONN team with Stewart and Co. They lost by 23, which is the exact average margin of victory for the Huskies in the Final Four during Stewart's era. Not sure what you expected them to do but there's no shame getting blown out by UCONN (or Notre Dame) during that era.

2015 Maryland with 4 future WNBA players loses by 23 to UConn... a moral victory?
2016 Maryland with 5 future WNBA players loses by 26 to Notre Dame who is missing Natalie Archowan another key moral victory.

Ah that's right. I forgot they were without the great Natalie Archowan.

Oh yes, TAYLOR MIKESELL. Can we do Mikesell and Bibby trade?

Not that I want Bibby to leave, btw. Just that given the circumstances, the best I can hope for is that.
Actually, it was Mikesell for Benzan. Benzan was a great shooter at Harvard. This is what happens when you recruit elite players. The players on the current roster feel threaten.

This is the most accurate thing I've heard so far. Most elite programs never have their best players transfer. This is a real problem with her. Her communications with retaining players is very poor. I guess she feels she can recruit her way out of problems with the transfers.

I think there has been a little too much piling on of Brenda here. I said earlier she isn't my favorite coach in the world, largely based on her general demeanor. I suppose a couple of her teams have underachieved considering their talent some years but they have finished towards the top of their conference and the players who have stuck have turned out to be pretty good professionally.

I admit it's odd to see so many top players from her team transfer year after year. I've wondered what that was about even before the latest defections. Maybe she turns into a different person when she's the coach rather than recruiting but I would think word would be out in the recruiting world about that by now yet it hasn't stopped numerous AAs in high school from signing.

considering Andrews is coming off a major knee injury. I wouldn’t blame her. We all thought copper could be a bad fit at Baylor but it seemed to workout for both parties. Kim is usually really good with PGs
I agree, Kim is great at improving draft stock over the last two years on point guards. Slocum is a good fit and in my opinion more talented starting out than both the LSU guard and Cooper

The announcements of Benzan (coming) and Mikesell (going) were almost on top of each other. I'm not certain Mikesell, following a stellar sophomore season, would feel that threatened in a day to enter the portal. This was a player who was on the floor nearly 30 minutes per game and nearly always in "crunch" situations. If anything, I'd think the deal for Benzan -- who had just backed out of a long-time verbal commitment to Texas following the departure of Karen Aston -- progressed quickly.

I liked Mikesell's steadiness and her 40%+ from three-point land. If she had three years of elgibility left, I'd highly recommend for the Irish, who are a bit packed at the guard postion. However, I can bet Kevin McGuff of Ohio State has called her and/or has her on speed dial. ;)

Here's a Baltimore Sun article summarizing all the comings and goings at Maryland:

Maybe we should change the work 'commit" to "what the hell", :(

It has gotten crazy on the women's and men's side. Miss state just lost a third of our mens team to transfer and 3 declared early.

In Big East news:
- Jayla Alexander is transferring to Georgetown
- Shaila Beeler (IU) is doing a year at JUCO, but has already committed to Xavier.

cooper is a more ‘natural’ PG than Chloe and has better range (3 point shooting) but Chloe had one of the best and purest mid range games I’ve seen. It was the perfect match at Baylor with Cox/Brown terrorizing the paint. That 2019 team was special.

I agree. Chloe did a great job of taking advantage of what the defense gave her. It always seemed like she flowed well in the offense.
