2017 UConn Spring Practice Updates

RE not happy with practice today because at this point, the team should be better than the last practice. I always wondered how a QB became a TE overnight. Now we see it is hard to do due to strength.

I can see some kids leaving after being told they are either too slow or don't have what it takes. Randy saw it on film, has given them spring practice to prove him right or wrong. It is painful but necessary.

What is a little scary is the kids are tweeting things like, look how we have improved. They know they are better but they don't realize they aren't up to Randy's standards yet.

I'm still optimistic about all of this... He's brutally honest with them (unfortunately it's brutal)... better than all that other crap we dealt with for 3 years, like we were remedial. IMO, a breathe of fresh air...

Now it's time for these kids that want it to the kids that don't know if they really want it to separate themselves.... But we won't truly see anything until an update from coach on the 2 deep comes out around the 2nd week of August...

(In the words of the gret Bart Scott) "Can't Wait!"

We had six combined years of the stupid twins and Crazy Bob. We know Edsall is a good builder which would suggest he can also rebuild. But, we simply cannot expect much this season. There is simply too much to address with depth and new schemes.

Diaco, more than anything else may have screwed the roster. His recruiting was always a head scratcher to me. I never understood what he was trying to accomplish and now I'm pretty sure he didn't know what he wanted to accomplish.

So.....14-1? ;)

You also have to remember he doesn't have all his players yet, for what it's worth. He may have to play more freshman than he anticipated to fill in the gaps.

Initial Mike Anthony article today: Edsall Curbs His Enthusiasm: 'I Was Disappointed' In UConn Football Practice

>>"I think they want to play but I've got to make sure they stay in the moment," Edsall said. "That isn't until Friday. We needed to focus on what we were doing on Tuesday. Friday will get here soon enough. If we don't take care of things on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday — Friday isn't going to be what we want it to be. That's no different during the season. Everybody loves to play in the games, but it's that preparation that you've got to put in to make sure you can be successful in that game. They didn't have the kind of preparation that I liked today, and ultimately that rests with me."<<

"Typical Edsall, they haven't played a game yet and he's already trying to cover his butt by throwing the kids under the bus."

Ouch! OOOCH!! Quit throwing those eggs and tomatoes you Boneyard freaks. But seriously folks good to see Edsall laying the law down and not coddling. The kids need to know the truth and the ones that want it bad enough will rise to the challenge. I've noticed in the few clips we've been fortunate enough to see so far that too many don't have that sense of urgency in their step. Too many walking or standing around. Not enough running and/or being fully engaged. You look at P-5 practices with the upper echelon and those kids hit, hit hard and move with purpose through practices. I'm glad Edsall is sending the message that what is right now is not good enough.

I rarely agree with you - but on your comment regarding urgency, yeah I noticed the same. Seems like practice is running at 80% of full speed in some clips.

This is all part of the process to weed some kids out. He gave them a full spring, watched what they could do and now its time to see how some respond to the challenge. Some will leave and that's probably just fine really.

The incoming freshman class is going to get a chance to play. I'm looking at you Mr Robert Holmes.

Peart won't be the only inexperienced OL that just gets overpowered by Foley this year...

no he wont be but Peart isn't inexperienced either, he started all 12 games for us last season. he was heralded as the savior of this offensive line, im not trying to bash the kid but we need to temper expectations. he has a ton of work to do and usually the offensive line above all but DL is a position were you need to have a "want to" mentality. its a thankless position where praise is rarely received but responsibility is heaped and you need to want to get better and be better without recognition.

... and Foley has three times as many games played. Always room for improvement but he got out techniqued by a veteran.

and he will be playing against guys this season that are even better than Foley. college football isn't freshmen v. freshmen, soph v. soph etc. if your playing you need to be ready to go against the best at all times. there comes a time when guys need to be held accountable and we as a fan base cannot be ok with accepting mediocrity. like you said he got out techniqued by a veteran but when you look at the tape and realize he utilized no technique what so ever and just tried to out muscle a guy then that is alarming. it simply will not work at this level.

.-.
this is exactly what i was talking about with Peart, he plays so high, doesn't use technique or leverage to gain control. he has a long way to go.
As I said from time to time last year, Knappe was a huge offender in this area. The guy was a man mountain but had guys stand him up routinely.

Really shouldn't come as a surprise to hear any of this. The roster is a mess. Diaco recruited at a FCS level. We had a lot of posters claim it was mostly coaching (and a lot of it certainly was), but we just don't have the talent right now. This is gonna take a while.

He and his agent wanted to collect 3.4 million $$$ without having to pass Go. Mission accomplished. They ended up owning Park Place and The Boardwalk with hotels for accomplishing less than nothing. They're laughing all the way to their respective banks.

At least, now, Edsall 2.0 doesn't appear to be settling when it comes to recruiting so far... bringing in transfers from the FBS level , or that clearly are FBS level talent, that will help NOW is a clear sign of that....

I'm not going to disagree with you, although I don't think we have any idea what level of talent we have. Diaco clearly couldn't develop players either. I hold out hope that there's something to work with, because we were actually competitive through the first 4 games of the season against three FBS opponents. I know too of them were awful, but at least it's something to keep me from utter despair.
