Not Developing or Not Identifying Talent?

The reason I listed the injury for Akok is it's an Achilles injury which is a really tough injury to come back from, especially for a guy who's game is all about his athleticism I think Bouk significantly improved his game, he was somewhere around the 50th recruit in his class coming out of HS...

Not Developing or Not Identifying Talent?

Yeah we can remove Sid. I don’t want to excuse injuries too much either. Alterique suffered two shoulder injuries and larrier sufferer an ACL and both were still fine for the most part. Gilbert was all conference, Larrier averaged his career high in his last season. Did Bouknight significantly...

(Updated) What was the most upsetting injury in the last 10 years?

I voted Akok, but this is my second choice. We were actually playing well that season (beat Oregon, playing MSU close) until AG got hurt. Having multiple surgeries on the same shoulder is brutal (I know from personal experience) and it obviously derailed Alterique's career.

You have to wonder if history would have been different if Alterique hadn't injured his shoulder.

    Alterique Gilbert lost potential

. It was a factor in changing trajectory of program. Those first 3 games of that first season (before he went down) he was often best player on the floor. he was averaging 30 minutes a game and scoring over 10 points a game. Yeah we lost to Northeastern and Wagner to start the season but...

We Have a Problem at Point Guard

Cole may be short, but he’s strong and quick. To me, he should be driving more and looking for contact / fouls. Alterique was definitely much quicker and had an easier time getting separation. There were times his drives looked like completely horrible decisions (out of control, into like 3...

OT: Rotator Cuff Tear (me not a player)

I don't have advice to offer but I'm dealing with somewhat similar issues. I separated the same right shoulder in May that I've subluxed 3x previously. With that said...I wish I could take back all the horrible things I've said about Alterique. Don't know how a man can shoot a basketball...

Borges: Andre Jackson is ‘so ready’ to begin his UConn MBB career

A reminder that Alterique also had ups in HS that I don't recall seeing from him at UConn, especially with the number of times he failed going to the hoop. In HS he dunked in traffic. I've often wondered if he had more injuries than the shoulder. Jackson I think will translate to UConn and be...

    Oz says Gilbert to Shockers

Here's what Kansas.com has to say about Gilbert. Interesting analysis. I wonder what our knowledgeable posters think of what they're saying? Pretty high level interest and, if real, seems there's better options than WSU. How about Musselman at Arkansas or Crean at Georgia (I know he's a crazy...

Wishing Alterique the best. He certainly hasn't had the best, with two lost years from shoulder instability, multiple surgeries, extended rehab, and a tough time getting his mojo back on the court. I think he turned the corner, however, and showed quite a bit the last few games. He's a good...

    Al in Portal

I hate to see him go. AG needs to do what he feels is right and best for himself. He gave this program everything he had on and off the court. His team leadership, setting the bar high and leading by example, his communication skills and chemistry with his teammates, was a very big part of the...

    Highlights v. Tulsa

Unfortunately, because it was a road game, there may not be a post game presser video from Coach Hurley. Dom Amore's article has lots of post game quotes though, and might be the best we'll get. James Bouknight, Alterique Gilbert lead as UConn men finally win at Tulsa, 72-56 By DOM AMORE...

    When did it become ok?

This might be your most ridiculous post yet. Both have taken bad shots their entire careers. Vital is capable of shooting better when he sets his feet, squares his shoulders and takes uncontested shots. Unfortunately he has a history from day 1 of taking ill advised shots, and that’s not Danny...

Taking stock of the program heading into 2020 (originally written 12/11)

No way I could read that whole thing. But I would say almost exclusively attributable to Akok, with a huge assist by Al’s great on ball pressure.

Taking stock of the program heading into 2020 (originally written 12/11)

UConn’s somewhat meteoric rise in defensive efficiency – from a disappointing 129th a year ago to 37th as of this moment – can be attributed in large part to the addition of Akok Akok. They simply do not make very many human beings like him, and to the extent that he’s elevated their defensive...

Gaffney took a big step forward tonight

The original post you directed towards me is that my statement about experience was BS. If anything this thread about Gaffney demonstrates that experience is an important component in development along with skill and maturation. Jalen Gaffney was a better high school player than any of the St...

Hurley versus Edsall (and BD for that matter)

The roster Hurley inherited was miles better than the one Edsall inherited. Let's look at the recruiting rankings: Jalen Adams 5* #23 player Alterique Gilbert 4* #32 player Sidney Wilson 4* #87 player Mamadou Diarra 4* #126 player (injured, but didn't realize it at the time) Christian Vital...

AG likely out rest of the week

Might be accurate, but it's more than a bit harsh. Some people catch the injury bug. Hard to pin that on the kid, he's done nothing but keep a positive attitude, put in the work, and support his teammates and coaches. There's no question in my mind that AG will play a big role in this season...
  27. Storrs South

    AG last year

It's a valid point. I do feel like prior to the injury v. Wichita State he was playing without any limitations or hesitation from the shoulder but that's subjective. He doesn't need to be Jalen Adams level good at the rim, just average would be enough along with quality outside shooting...

    Chief’s Briefs - Cincy Edition

I like Gilbert and Chief watched him closely - there were several times in the game he was favoring or trying to protect his shoulder. He did not get up quickly from spills etc. Sorry, I just did not see that same player as before the injury.

    Gilbert, Carlton, Polley, Wilson, BAdams

He had the injury with the shoulder in his Sophomore year in high school too so it wasn't like he was coming in with a clean injury history.

    Chief’s Briefs - Memphis Edition

I can tell you as a shooting coach, if you want to get better at this level, 200-300 shots a day is nowhere near enough. With a shooting gun, that's half an hour of work, tops. Good shooters trying to get better are putting up 1000+ every day.

    Chief’s Briefs - Memphis Edition

Chief also likes to have some guys on our side who can out muscle our opponents. You win games by using an advantage over an opponent - it can be size, speed & quickness, muscle or skill. When you have and identify that advantage then you play it until they stop it.

    Chief’s Briefs - Memphis Edition

I find myself really pulling for Cobb when he comes in. He played decent defense on Parks and Maurice today, was a beast on the boards and had 4 assists - really good passer for a big man. He is the one player on the roster who can out-muscle opponents, and I appreciate his offseason effort to...
