Xavier Post Game Thread

94-89 is what a gritty win looks like when a team's defense is as bad as UConn's. UConn just gave up 89 points to a team that is missing its best player.

I love offense as much as anyone, and these high scoring games are fun to watch, but UConn is going to have to at least slow the other team down at some point if it wants to even make the second weekend of the tournament.

I agree, you have to defend and should not allow 48 2nd half points to Xavier. They lost to Cincy for crying out loud. But sometimes when you are trying to close it out, you look for daggers and the game speeds up. That may have been a mistake because Xavier answered every single time. I'm sure that will be addressed in the next practice.

Xavier: 13-24 trifectas, 54%. if a team is going to have the night of their life, it will be against UConn.

Also, First Big East Game of the Season. This was forking huge!!

Well, it was 78 in regulation … but, yeah, that 49-48 second half was not ideal. Some of it was X playing out of their minds, but we got beat with some straight up bully ball from their guards too - the sort of stuff teams wouldn’t have bothered trying last year with Clingan waiting.

Although the one head-scratching thing I can’t figure out from last years run was the 95-90 BET win over St. John’s. We locked everything down but that one day we couldn’t get a stop.

Tonight showed me a legit championship team . I know we played poorly for 10 minutes but I’m looking at the after burner edition Best frontline in Cbb with Reid Liam and alex

Re the refs: in a 20 second span late in regulation, a ball clearly goes off Xavier right in front of the incompetent or dirty ref. He gives it to Xavier. Announcers point out, too bad,so sad for UCONN, it can't be reviewed because it's just over 2:00. Just under 2:00, the ball goes out of bounds off an Xavier player. The ref on the court gives it to UCONN. But, Xavier asks for a review. The announcers look at it a few times, along with the rest of the world and say, no way to overturn it. Surprisingly (actually unsurprisingly) the incompetent or dirty refs reverse the call and give it to Xavier. We go to OT.

Don't even get me started on the ridiculous foul calling the cleaning blocked 3 pointer. Yhe announcers watch it and sheepishly say, I guess there may have been body contact, even though no one but the incompetent or dirty ref claims he did. I guess he didn't fully comprehend that his call wouldn't impact the outcome at that point, but he simply couldn't help himself. I guess it doesn't matter to them the the announcers were actually laughing at the no call on the Xavier traveling. So, why even pretend.

Bottom line, UCONN will have to play and win 5 on 8 games all year long. Players, coaches and fans will need to accept it.

The way these teams are shooting 3s against us is unsustainable. They can't miss even when we're playing good defense, like tonight. We are now #11 in the country in 2pt defense only allowing teams to shoot 43%, while we're #359 in 3pt defense where our opponents are making a ridiculous 39%. Maybe we aren't that great at guarding the 3, but we are definitely not THIS bad.

Playing a very good 3pt shooting team in Butler on the road next and I'm terrified that this ridiculous luck will continue where teams just can't miss from deep against us.

Your're a liar. The place was had a buzz from the start. It spontaniously erupted several times. When they went down 5 the place went crazy until they clawed back. They loudly berated the officials. It was great. You know who doesn't have credibility? Someone who posts "They were not throwing in prayers all night."
I disagree with your opinion and you call me a liar. Great talk.

Did you go to the Baylor game? That’s what I thought.

In section 108 there were at least 50 people who didn’t stand up until the last 4 minutes. There were rows of empty seats behind the basket. The students were on break.

I love the Civic Center. Been to numerous games where the atmosphere was better. I didn’t say it was bad, just that it wasn’t close to top 20 and recently Baylor. In fact, instead of talking about the game and celebrating it, your first post brings up this tired narrative about how civic center is better.

A defender has rights to his space on the floor. That was closer to ankle level, and Liam tripped across his lower leg as the defender was sliding.

They def did, and fine if you’re letting them go but then don’t call one on Tarris that was no more egregious than what Xavier was throwing.

Sorry you can’t guard people with your knees leading the way to slow you down this one was real easy, they blew it. He was getting by the X man if he didn’t use the knee and leg. Blown call but not the only one, on both sides mind you!

Favorite Raff quote tonight, in reference to Karaban: “He’s gonna have a long life playing this game!”
He's pretty smart and aware. After his on court career he could well wind up coaching. Financially and challenge wise that may be a lot more rewarding then engineering for him.

Crowd was great and engaged in the second half. Taunted the refs too. TeeVee never translates the experience well. Don’t trust how it sounds with muted / filtered mics over the air or down the stream.
Crowd sounded great on TV to me. Not sure where all this hate coming from or what everyone else listened to.

A lot of good to take away from that game.
-we have a lot of depth.

-sans foul trouble, lol , best center rotation in the country , 3 years in a row. It even has a legit 3rd option , limiting the stress of foul trouble going forward.

- solo, Liam and AK is the best 2-3-4 in the country also , arguably

-Our “weakness “ at pg , is being led by our 2 time champ, 5th yesr senior , big east 6th man , who had 7,11,7,11 assists in his last 4 games. Hasan is developing a poise i wasnt sure he had , a real pg.

-this team is really good AGAIN. Is all i will say.
The best part as dan said , because of the youthful core , this team is only going improve as the season progresses.

  • McNeeley looks like a complete 3 , paul pierce like
  • if multiple players dont have a career night this is a easy win , still credit to them hell of game. With freemantle would of been real frisky as they gelled together.
  • some the plays drawn up with McNeeley and reed were so beautiful and simple and effective.
  • besides tonight’s performance i still believe Samson should start. As long reed gets his proper min and opportunities it really shouldn't matter , i View him as a 6th starter, feels luxurious lol.
-big east refs bring a consistent madness you love to hate because how familiar it is.
It seemed that there were more questionable calls (both ways) in this game then all the previous games combined. On top of that it took them forever with so many replays that also took forever. They looked really inept and there were many calls down the stretch that could have stolen the game from us but the lads just would not give up.:) That impressed me more than anything and there was a lot of good things they showed. A few years ago they would have found a number of ways to lose it. Well done and a big credit to Xavier for real Big East toughness on the road with Freemantle out.

There have been times I've imagined him as Havlicek (even if not really). Tonight he had his second garbage putback in the last week or so that brought to mind Bailey Howell.
Boy, you go back probably as far as I do.

Jimmy Chitwood is not playing for Butler.

Great win. We're going to get everyone’s best effort, and this game was an example of that. X played great, couldn't miss, Miller was getting uncontested layups out of timeouts, it might be the best game they'll play all season. If they can bottle this up, they're dancing

And we responded. Gutsy effort, we're good

Hurley won another close game! They kept fighting even though it was awful down the stretch... not to be that guy but whats the excuse for the crowd this time? Back to back champs, Big East Home opener, close game.... all i heard was lets go huskies at some points. Are the students too used to winning, or do they just not get "it", is it the the TV broadcast and it was wild in there, or is that a product of the XL center?

The students bring the juice.. in my opinion they didn't bring it today the way i'm sure a lot of people were expecting. Karaban, Hurley, the Social Media team, McNeeley, Diarra, pretty much everyone has said countlessly they need the fans. Hurley was outspoken when they went to Kansas last year and truly saw what court advantage looks like. Ready to be flamed but all you have to do is go back and watch replays of older teams to know what I'm talking about.

The crowd was sensational, again

The crowd is sensational at every game in MSG, and in Boston last year. Those are not student crowds, those are UConn fan crowds

I'm not mocking our students, they're great. But suggesting the rest of us don't bring it is simply wrong

His timeouts were pretty much perfectly timed.

I listened to his post game and it's obvious they're still reeling from the freemantle loss. Was also pretty funny that he's claiming Zach freemantle is "4% body fat"

As if anyone could play basketball for more than 5 minutes at 4% body fat lol.
100% one most certainly can. Fat is not the primary energy source in this sport. The body, even at 4%, has plenty of fat reserves.

What an insane game. I’m starting to think we’re snake bitten from 3 on D. There were lapses, but a lot of them were tough shots. Just not sure how it happens every game.

Their center was setting solid screens on top with no intention of rolling, so he was really sticking to the defender trying come over. It gave many of the shooters that little extra time to plant and shoot And they got hot. I don‘t recall one illegal screen, so that was a great job by them.

Our perimeter switches tonight were awful. The X plan was if Reed is on you shoot

Definitely in OT and to a degree in the last 2 minutes it looked IIke Reed was quicker and more agressive on the high hedges than he was earlier. Maybe that was to conserve fouls, but its possible the staff had him change his approach and that extra step out made a difference.

I also don't get how they missed McNeeley getting tripped at the end of regulation.

They did not miss it, they chose to ignore it. It’s not like it was off to the side and incidental. That has to be called whether there are 9 seconds or 9 minutes left. You run a play for arguably your best offensive threat and they trip him. That shut the play set down.

That second half was electric. We won another close game!

The good
  • Diarra was a calming and consistent presence for us. Another double double
  • Solo’s 6-17 isn’t great but he has no fear in the clutch. Huge threes in the second half and a career high 22 points
  • McNeeley and Karaban went off in the second half because Liam played aggressively and AK trusted the flow of the offense
  • Tarris Reed will be a BE POY contender next year.
  • CASH APP!!!!!
The bad -
  • Who is Maddox Jr? Will he ever play like that again? INCREDIBLE 1-on-1 shotmaking to lead a 13-24 night from 3 for X
  • Sorry but I have to. Disgraceful officiating last night. They let everything go (which is fine because it was for both teams), but then would call a random touch foul, and then immediately follow it with a bad make up call. The final 20 seconds of the second half was terrible. They call a foul on nothing to put us ahead, then call a foul on nothing to let X tie it, then swallow their whistle on the only actual foul in the sequence when Liam got tripped. The horrible officiating was consistent on both teams so at the end of the day it’s whatever, but it was still horrible
But….at the end of the day, we won a conference opener! Let’s go Huskies!

You wouldn't be able to feed yourself enough fuel for your body to play competitive sports and maintain 4% body fat. It's not possible.

Most body building champions are 3-5% body fat for several hours before and during their competition, and then within days are back to 8%. Those are the guys where you litterally see the ripples in their muscles and their butts are squares. Anything below 5% is active starvation
