Xavier Post Game Thread

A lot of good to take away from that game.
-we have a lot of depth.

-sans foul trouble, lol , best center rotation in the country , 3 years in a row. It even has a legit 3rd option , limiting the stress of foul trouble going forward.

- solo, Liam and AK is the best 2-3-4 in the country also , arguably

-Our “weakness “ at pg , is being led by our 2 time champ, 5th yesr senior , big east 6th man , who had 7,11,7,11 assists in his last 4 games. Hasan is developing a poise i wasnt sure he had , a real pg.

-this team is really good AGAIN. Is all i will say.
The best part as dan said , because of the youthful core , this team is only going improve as the season progresses.

  • McNeeley looks like a complete 3 , paul pierce like
  • if multiple players dont have a career night this is a easy win , still credit to them hell of game. With freemantle would of been real frisky as they gelled together.
  • some the plays drawn up with McNeeley and reed were so beautiful and simple and effective.
  • besides tonight’s performance i still believe Samson should start. As long reed gets his proper min and opportunities it really shouldn't matter , i View him as a 6th starter, feels luxurious lol.
-big east refs bring a consistent madness you love to hate because how familiar it is.

Hard call as he drove over a guys planted foot, the guy didn’t stick it out purposely.
Alex I believe had a foul called on him for that exact same thing in the tournament last year I believe in the Final Four vs Alabama.

We had a really ugly long stretch in the first half with McNeeley on the bench. It turned into an amazing game, X was making contested stepback three after contested stepback three and we always responded. McNeeley makes our offense go. Some of those dimes to Reed when we got him on the move were beautiful. Reed is a beast, he's a more physically impressive Sanogo when it's all said and done. Solo didn't shoot great but he's an incredibly clutch shooter, he seems to always make the big shot. I thought he played his most complete game. He's a baller. AK made huge plays in OT.

That was a lot better than our Big East season opener last year.

I'm sick as a dog, so glad we stepped up and took that win.
Get well!

The foul call on Ross with 9 seconds left in regulation was BS. The Xavier player (Maddox?) threw his head back when he brushed his teammate who set the screen and got the call, Ross didn't touch the him. It smelled of a make-up call but the call on McNeeley was legit.

I was a bit relieved however as I was worried X would launch a contested three and hit it.

I also don't get how they missed McNeeley getting tripped at the end of regulation.
Nah Ross bodied him

I was actually fine with them for most of the game. But the last like 5 minutes of reg through OT was one of the worst stretches of refereeing I’ve seen in a long time.
They got away with a handful of moving screens during the game. On one their big took out two of our players, John Hannah would have been impressed. They also did a ton of grabbing under the basket that wasn't called.

The students bring the juice.. in my opinion they didn't bring it today the way i'm sure a lot of people were expecting.
The students are on semester break so I'm sure that is why many weren't there. Although you would think a lot of UConn students live within easy driving distance of Hartford that they could use a nice night out in the capital city.

I am in "Let's find a way to win these" mode, right now. Do not care about style points. The team got better tonight and love McNeeley driving. Should have been him ending this game at the FT line with that no-call block.

Proud of Tarris' FT at the end of reg. He showed out tonight in multiple ways.
Yeah, our 6-10 260 lb center was 6-6 from the FT line and is one of the guys we need for closeouts!!

Team roles seem to be rounding in to form. Would like for Stewart and Ross to produce more offensively but will take the defensive boost they give in the meantime.

They’re starting to look more and more confident out there.

We commanded the stats but for 3 which was why it was close. 35-27 boards, 21-9 assists, 10-2 blocks, 7-10 turnovers. Add 54% from 3 and horrendous reffing and voila a close game.

One of my major tenants about games is that it's hard to beat a team that is hot from 3. That's how many upsets happen. X was 8 for 10 in the second half! And 54 percent for the game... somehow, we still won, so this is a very good win
We took 11 more shots due to having fewer turnovers and winning the rebounding battle. Those were big factors as well as shooting lights out from the line.

We got away with a bunch too. The refs largely let people play for most of the game. The end was a travesty though.

That foot wasn’t planted he was guarding, cutting him off with his cut with his knee which is a foul all day.
A defender has rights to his space on the floor. That was closer to ankle level, and Liam tripped across his lower leg as the defender was sliding.

They def did, and fine if you’re letting them go but then don’t call one on Tarris that was no more egregious than what Xavier was throwing.

Ross didn't touch him. The Xavier player ran through what appeared to be a pick by another Xavier player, and the ref thought, "well nobody's that freakin stupid, so it had to be Ross creating contact..."
This is what I saw as well. X player was setting up a screen and his own player ran into him and the foul was called on Ross.
