Wow, is there a “character” concern for Tenn’s Horston?

I don’t like how grown folks react to stuff like this concerning teenagers who make mistakes. I get that some schools are rivalry programs and you’re upset a recruit didn’t commit to UConn, but these are still kids. Some of y’all are decades older than these kids and have probably done far worse in your younger days. Chill.

Beat me to it. Kids do stupid things all day long. If they are an athlete it gets noticed. Hopefully she learned from the mistake.

Shame on ESPN too

NO! Shame on Horston. Sweeping this under the rug does Horston no good. What it helps is the image of the Vols.
When I was at UConn the starting QB and a couple of team mates got caught like this. They were tossed off the team. Years later a few BB players got caught and were tossed out of school. Both incidents were wisely reported in CT newspapers. Horston should take the heat and just be glad she still has a scholarship.
No disrespect to you but several Vol fans and program coaches have slandered someone close to the UConn program for over 15 years with absolutely no factual basis. Reading that same group now excusing a felony says a lot about that group.

Class at its best !

I'm sure the Duke students would have bucked that trend if the Lady Vols were playing in Cameron this season. I seem to recall Walmart bags were popular in Durham in 2006.

wasnt that for hornbuckle? Classic

The value of the merchandise was only $124.97. I don’t believe that’s enough value to constitute a felony in any state.

Maybe I'm just old. $100.00 used to be one.

While there is a lot I wouldn't say this about, shoplifting is relatively minor enough that - as long as it is clear to the person that they made a big mistake and are punished in some fashion - it is also fine to move on.

We all make mistakes at that age, I did as well, as someone pointed out above. You learn. OR you get in progressively bigger trouble and in the end ruin your life. So I'm with the majority, I am ok with this, provided she learned from it, which of course we will never really know.
Glad your ok with shoplifting

I would like to know this young lady's economic circumstances. So many athletes come from poverty, and even with the scholarship, are barely getting by, or their families are suffering. Do we recall how UConn men basketball players complained that they were going hungry? They weren't permitted to take food with them out of the food service?

Just think we might want to find out what was really going on before casting aspersions on the young lady herself.

Issue isn’t the young woman’s mistake. Particularly if she learns from it. But disappointed In UT with what appears to be a very lenient response.

Based on her USA bio, I dont think she comes from a poor background. Father was in the military and she has relatives who played in the NFL and her cousin is Sylvia Crawley who was a WNBA player. Not that you can conclude anything from this, but Horston was also a good student, a member of student council and played tennis/ran cross country. Guessing she just made a dumb decision and got caught.

My working career was in security and auditing. Neither I nor the company I worked for tolerated any stealing - I had someone dismissed for stealing $17.00

What I am ok with is that youth make mistakes and do stupid things. The greater the possibility that someone was hurt or could be hurt by something someone does, the less tolerant I am.

In this case, I personally would have expected a greater punishment. If it was an Arizona player, I would be disappointed in the school for that small of a punishment. That said, I'm not suggesting being kicked off the team or anything, but a multi-game suspension would seem to me more fitting. Although we don't know the circumstances.

And yes, I did do stupid things in college. I drove drunk - never had an accident, thank goodness, and never was stopped. I haven't been drunk in over 30 years (and haven't had a drink at all in probably 7 or so). I never shoplifted, but I'm not sure at that age that I can claim excessive virtue or just excessive fear.

Here is your bottomline. Unfortunately she is a high profile player playing for a major university. In the past I have admittedly looked at these through the lens of whether they played for my school or another one. However now that I have a teenager I look at it differently. Despite our best efforts our kid has done some stupid stuff. Fortunately we were there to help get him back on the path. Best wishes to Horston. I hope she learns from this. Take your licks and move on. Life is tough. However it’s even tougher if you are stupid.

Didn't realize people still wore Tommy Hilfiger.
Seriously, I feel like I'm transported back to the late '90s with that song by K-Ci and Jo-Jo playing in the background.

Late 90s? I was thinking more like early 90s..... with me roaming the aisles of Hecht's looking for anything with a Hilfiger Crest.

My fashion date timelines are always a bit off. I never wore Hilfiger anyway.

So if they are poor and hungry it’s ok to steal clothes interesting way of thinking

My initial reaction was not for Horston but that TN seemed to hide it under an "illness" umbrella. In most cases I am aware of, if a player is punished for bad behavior (or other actions) by not playing, it is usually explained to the public as "not playing due to an infraction of team rules" or something similar. No more details are needed but it is not really a punishment unless it is labeled a punishment.

Got to chime in here. I have shoplifted before. When I was in the fourth grade my cousin and I stole candy from a store quite often. The man, Mr Sam, who owned the store had his son who also was a fourth grader ask me to come to the store and talk with him. I knew what he wanted and thought he would tell the cops, the cops would take me home and my dad would take care of me with the belt but that is not what happened. I went to talk with Mr. Sam and he told me he had seen me steal candy but he was not going to call the cops, he gave me two choices, never come in the store again or work off the candy by cleaning the store every day for one week. I choose to Work. When the week was over Mr. Sam offered me a job working in the store. I accepted. My cousin thought that was great, now he could steal candy and know I would never tell. He did steal and I did not tell. I followed him out of the store and he and I fought, I returned the candy. Mr. Sam saw it all but said nothing. The next my cousin came into the store and confessed that he had stole from the store. Mr. Sam offered him the same deal and he accepted. Last time I ever stole anything. Hope this young lady finds her Mr. Sam.

Nice story but hard to see the relevancy to Horston's situation (different age, different level of public scrutiny, different expectations) and even less relevancy to my comment regarding the need to identify that a punishment is a punishment.

It’s a shame this is posted here. It will be expunged after one year but with disrespectful people putting it on the internet. Hope it makes you feel better.

No "shame" for Horston actually stealing stuff though huh??? Good to see another Vol with their priorities in the right place.
