Didn't realize people still wore Tommy Hilfiger.
Seriously, I feel like I'm transported back to the late '90s with that song by K-Ci and Jo-Jo playing in the background.

Late 90s? I was thinking more like early 90s..... with me roaming the aisles of Hecht's looking for anything with a Hilfiger Crest.

My fashion date timelines are always a bit off. I never wore Hilfiger anyway.

I would like to know this young lady's economic circumstances. So many athletes come from poverty, and even with the scholarship, are barely getting by, or their families are suffering. Do we recall how UConn men basketball players complained that they were going hungry? They weren't permitted to take food with them out of the food service?

Just think we might want to find out what was really going on before casting aspersions on the young lady herself.
So if they are poor and hungry it’s ok to steal clothes interesting way of thinking

My initial reaction was not for Horston but that TN seemed to hide it under an "illness" umbrella. In most cases I am aware of, if a player is punished for bad behavior (or other actions) by not playing, it is usually explained to the public as "not playing due to an infraction of team rules" or something similar. No more details are needed but it is not really a punishment unless it is labeled a punishment.

Got to chime in here. I have shoplifted before. When I was in the fourth grade my cousin and I stole candy from a store quite often. The man, Mr Sam, who owned the store had his son who also was a fourth grader ask me to come to the store and talk with him. I knew what he wanted and thought he would tell the cops, the cops would take me home and my dad would take care of me with the belt but that is not what happened. I went to talk with Mr. Sam and he told me he had seen me steal candy but he was not going to call the cops, he gave me two choices, never come in the store again or work off the candy by cleaning the store every day for one week. I choose to Work. When the week was over Mr. Sam offered me a job working in the store. I accepted. My cousin thought that was great, now he could steal candy and know I would never tell. He did steal and I did not tell. I followed him out of the store and he and I fought, I returned the candy. Mr. Sam saw it all but said nothing. The next my cousin came into the store and confessed that he had stole from the store. Mr. Sam offered him the same deal and he accepted. Last time I ever stole anything. Hope this young lady finds her Mr. Sam.

Nice story but hard to see the relevancy to Horston's situation (different age, different level of public scrutiny, different expectations) and even less relevancy to my comment regarding the need to identify that a punishment is a punishment.

It’s a shame this is posted here. It will be expunged after one year but with disrespectful people putting it on the internet. Hope it makes you feel better.
Shame on ESPN too
No "shame" for Horston actually stealing stuff though huh??? Good to see another Vol with their priorities in the right place.

The value of the merchandise was only $124.97. I don’t believe that’s enough value to constitute a felony in any state.
Hmmm, Tommy Hilfiger, $124.97. Must have been a scarf or pair of socks???

You missed my point, punishment that is punishment for me would have been the belt and I would have known the pain associated with my act of stealing, however that probably would not have been nearly as effective in deterring my future behavior as was the chance Mr. Sam gave me to correct my behavior. I suppose what I was trying to say is this young lady can learn from this as I did with a little understanding and that understanding includes doing something to atone for her act. Being suspended from a game would be punishment for punishment sake but not really a chance to atone. That is why I said I hope she find her Mr. Sam, in other words a chance to atone for her mistake.

I wonder how the Summitt or Vol Nation would react if a UConn player was arrested for Stealing. Perhaps our Lady Vol fans that posted on this thread would like to speculate how their fans would post. I doubt it would be as level headed as the UConn fans have posted.

Well in their defense, they'd be going apoplectic vis-a-vis the team that stole their thunder, has taken 6 titles since their last one, and has passed by UT on the way to the summit of women's college basketball...

...whereas Huskies fans are commenting on a player on a team on a multi-game losing streak to Alabama and whose fans will be ecstatic if they can win more than one game in the Tournament.

Of course they'd be outraged. And of course we mostly don't really care... :D

A ‘mistake’ is cutting class, being late to practice, hurting someone’s feelings or maybe blowing off an event you committed to attend. Stealing is a crime, not a ‘mistake’.

While I think we give young people some latitude and perhaps less punishment because of their immaturity when committing crimes, I don’t think we do them any favors by downplaying it for what it is. Unfortunately, when you accept the benefit of being in the public eye, it comes with a cost. Her reputation is tarnished and it is up to her to figure out how to rebuild it.

Oh good lord. Speeding is also a crime, but 95% of people do it. Ever crossed the street without a crosswalk? I'm not saying what she did was right, but the dramatics of how some of you are responding to this is ridiculous and I'm sure driven, intentionally or not, because she goes to TN.

How we behave as a person is based a lot on our life experiences and I'm pretty sure no one really understands what might have driven her to do this. No one is in a position to judge her and at this point, if she goes on to be a 2X AA and WNBA star - no, I don't think this is going to 'tarnish' her image. So many of us made mistakes, even technically breaking the law, in our youth and ended up just fine. I'm hopeful that she learned from it and will move on.

Are you serious with this question? They still post about Maya Moore's mother Kathryn as if she were a criminal.

With respect, your profile suggests that you are first and foremost an in-conference rival. I can see why TN has been in your sights for the past few years. For UConn, the rivals have, to varrying degrees, been the Domers first and foremost, Louisville, Stanford, Mississippi State, Baylor, and Oregon. TN has done nothing of national relevance in recent years and hasn't beaten UConn since most college players were in grade school. All the aforementioned but Oregon have beaten UConn since, and Oregon is stealing hype and headlines from the Huskies, if not yet (or ever) titles.

Even I as a Cardinal fan who's seen our team have some solid battles with the Lady Vols in recent years don't really care. She did something wrong, some amount of shame and punishment is warranted, and I think anyone with a sense of decency hopes she learns her lesson and moves on.
Guess I am just not making myself clear. 1. I am not a Tennessee fan, as a team they are one of the I DO NOT Like, 2. I did not mean to say I cared if the UT women basketball team lost every game, I don’t. 3. I did not mean to suggest shoplifting should be condoned, what I was trying to convey was the young lady needed to understand her behavior was wrong and she needed to do something to atone for her behavior, 4. Simply suspending a player from a sport would not atone for her action and holding her up ridicule was not IMO going to help her behavior. I am a WBB fan and I recognize what Geno and UConn have done for WBB, I am a UConn fan!

Good lord is right. You're comparing speeding or jaywalking with stealing? Knowingly going somewhere and stealing something is pretty bad. Doesn't really have anything to do with TN.

For the most part speeding or jaywalking isn't really hurting anyone else (unless you cause an accident or something like that), but stealing is intentionally going out of your way to knowingly hurt someone/some business.

Big difference.

Actually, this isn't true. In most jurisdictions, speeding is considered a civil infraction, not a criminal offense.

I was going to say you're projecting, but I see you're being sarcastic. It doens't work that way when it comes to rivals. It's more personal than you think. Auburn football fans don't defer to Alabama football because of Alabama national championships, UNC men's basketball fans when it comes to Coach K, Michigan football fans and Ohio St. etc. On the flip side, I have seen Clemson football fans get riled up about the chickens as they call their rivals, Duke fans ranting about UNC coach Roy Williams, etc.

I'm willing to give Horston the benefit of the doubt. She probably just took it too literally when her coach urged her to go for more steals. A totally innocent misunderstanding.

An interesting nerdy-legal sidepoint on shoplifting: It's one of a number of offenses that under U.S. immigration law, as well as in some state jurisdictions, are deemed "crimes of moral turpitude." Sounds like a phrase you'd read in The Scarlet Letter but it's a thing:
