Wow, is there a “character” concern for Tenn’s Horston?

It’s not wheather I like it or not. How can something be expunged when it’s embedded in the internet?
Maybe you should learn what expunged means. It does not mean a gag order on the media. It simply means removal from one's criminal record, i.e., it would no longer be seen in a criminal background check.

It’s a shame this is posted here. It will be expunged after one year but with disrespectful people putting it on the internet. Hope it makes you feel better.
So you think shoplifting is not a crime and should not be posted or discussed on the internet.
I am shocked that you did not blame the shoplifter but blame the people posted it.
Do Vol fans all have this moral standard?

I know exactly what expunged means. If someone behaves theirselves for an allotted amount of time it will be removed from their record. Which is useless if it’s already all over the internet forever

Too bad so sad. Maybe she should've thought of those consequences before she knowingly, as an 18-year-old adult, committed theft.

And why are you venting at the Boneyard about this? Maybe you should direct your righteous anger at, say, the Knoxville News Sentinel or ESPN, which surely have greater reach than our humble forum.

Good lord is right. You're comparing speeding or jaywalking with stealing? Knowingly going somewhere and stealing something is pretty bad. Doesn't really have anything to do with TN.

For the most part speeding or jaywalking isn't really hurting anyone else (unless you cause an accident or something like that), but stealing is intentionally going out of your way to knowingly hurt someone/some business.

Big difference.
True - although someone was speeding on one of Tucson's streets last week, hit an SUV with a family in it and killed all or most of them. Going, I think, like 90 on a city street.

What I'm trying to find out, and since I respect your opinions I'll ask you -

- What should her sentence have been? Clearly from the comments, the community service and probation is deemed too light

- What should her school punishment have been? Here I agree it was a bit light, but I'm getting the feeling that most would think my opinion (a couple of game suspension - regular season) is too light?

It is fine for everyone to pile on like any of us think it was ok. Some of us, myself included, just don't think it was the worst thing possible for a one time incident. If she doesn't get that she was wrong, she is headed to a very bad life. But we don't know that at this point.

I don't think this episode would have blown up as much if not for the constant insinuations from Knoxville about the dirty UConn Huskies program. Call UConn dirty all you want, but at least our players aren't criminals stealing things in broad daylight. Call Geno all the names you want, but he's not the coach looking the other way on criminal behavior just for the sake of winning a few extra ball games. Geno benches players for not putting in enough effort. Tennessee won't even bench players for being felons.

I can’t remember - did Barbara Turner get suspended for stealing that male UConn player’s laptop?
Yea, your memory seems to be failing you. It was men's players who stole laptops. And they were suspended for a semester. (a bit more than an European tour exhibition game)

BT got into an altercation at a party. Along with a couple other women's players. They were disciplined in-house by Geno.

Thanks for straightening out my history lesson. You’ve been the BY historian today, but suspect you got this one on your own - no help from Google. ?

It was popular for the whole decade of the 1990s.... i started the trend around 1991 ;). . then as others followed me en masse... i graduated to Ralph Lauren

Is Nautica still in fashion...or how about Izod?

Google is your friend.

To me, this is very disappointing to see. Youth invites poor decisions which this could and should fall under. That said, she needs to issue a statement on how stupid and immature it was to acknowledge she has taken accountability and grown from this. Otherwise, this just highlights the lack of vetting about “character” that had gone on at Tenn. So all you Tenn fans-what say you?
In the "Minority" decision: If she had knifed someone I'd be upset. I don't know her background or where she came from, all petty crimes are not a stepping stone to a criminal life.
She took responsibility, that's a huge step, she paid near 400 buck (thats a lot of money) for court costs. A lesson was given (learned????). For this one I give her a pass. Next time, hit her with a hammer.

Horston is my favorite player in her class (well, behind the ones I root for now), but an adult shoplifting is significant question mark and there is no real pride to take in serving out a punishment.

Hopefully, this is the end of her issues and she is clean sailing from here on out.

I am legally rigid I see two colors black and white, usually. Yet while my early years were not financially exciting (meaning poor, but don"t tell Mom she never acknowledged that) I can understand those even less well off than I seeing some attraction by doing as she did. As my spouse says: There but for the grace of God goes I!!

Most of these kids aren't poor. Horston is from Columbus Ohio not Haiti. No excuse to steal. Maybe if you were six or seven years old, but certainly not when you are an adult.

Adult? There are many definitions of that term. One is 18 (legal) then Dr Phil's 30 and mine, I'm not there yet.
It really becomes difficult to make this kind of decision without all the facts. It does not cost a UConn Fan or that of any other team one US or RED cent to be generous and take the road less traveled.
.

she is #2 overall recruit so I understand why this is news and reported by people....

but as for the crime..... c'mon give her a break..... she is young, she made a mistake.... and she will undoubtedly learn from this.....

she should be left alone.....

The one often overlooked concept is does anyone really believe this is the very first time she did this and was caught doing it the very first time she did it? Or has this likely happened before at lesser stores, thus emboldening her to escalate this type of behavior. Patterns of criminology show smaller types initially, growing to higher “boldness”.
To me, of course I am willing to forgive, but Not forget until truly convinced by seeing a certain maturity and demeanor in interviews over the next few Years. Remember this is not a 10 year old (or 12/14 year old) this was a 17/18 year old at a high scale store so stop with the overly sympathetic perspective.

When Susan Walvius was the coach at South Carolina, a player stole from some of her teammates. That player was dismissed.

I’ll bite. I think her sentence was appropriate. But, as I said before, I think UT missed an opportunity to establish and act on its values. Like you, I would have thought a 1 or 2 in season suspension and being upfront that it was for a violation of team rules and not “illness.” Instead, UT sent an entirely different message as to what its values are.

I respect that. It’s nice to know some programs value integrity even if it means losing a player. Other programs would rather sweep it under the rug and hope no one notices — and then shoot the messenger when they do.

I’m far from”mistake free” but I could never understand stealing from someone. Retail “shrinkage” is now a bigger issue than ever. Home Depot is reporting all time high store theft contributing to decreased profits and will soon be raising prices on honest customers. (Guess dishonest customers prices remain the same ha!) It’s to the point it’s affecting HD’s stock share value.
