I gotta admit I'm fairly shocked by this. He's turn down bigger college jobs before, I thought he wanted to stay at FGCU long term. Maybe the changing landscape of college sports recently changed his mind.

- That could be part of it.
Plus:
  • As a mid-major coach, he's not probably at the higher level of pay grades (compared to P5), so he probably got an increase.
  • I think his preference for an upbeat style can work very well. Grey, Howard and Canada, in particular, will love to run and gun. The question: does Charles fit in? Or want to?
In any case, here's his explanation for taking the post.

I highly recommend reading this piece from Kelsey Mitchell. It gives fans a better appreciation as to what she was dealing with this season. Per this quote, she's going to test the free agent market:

"When I look back at my journey with the Fever, from 2018 to now, and everything I went through, I feel like it was just supposed to happen this way. And it’s hard to know what the future holds. I’ll be honest, I don’t know what colors I’ll be wearing next year, which just makes me cherish this season and our group even more. I’ve never been through free agency, so I’m looking forward to the opportunity to explore that for the first time in my career and have a say in my future as a basketball player."

Never thought Smesko would leave FGCU
Think it was just the right moment. WNBA on a roll, money and prestige now strong, Atlanta a good family fit, and if it goes sideways- he is young enough to get back in college game.

Yes he left mid season, but he has been incredibly loyal, and will turn over to assistant for continuity and most likely still available as a resource this year.

I like the hire for Dream, but up tempo will certainly be interesting with current roster.

He worked wonders with Jackie Young and her shooting technique. She went from an average W player to one of the best two way guards in the world.
Young always had a flat shot that improved immensely a couple of years ago. Hopefully he can help correct Angel Reese’s form and release. If she can consistently hit midrange I think everything opens up for her offensively

While I hear and agree with you on the mid-range, I think he could -- and should -- initially help Reese more in her wheelhouse: putting up chippies following offensive rebounds (which god knows she's proficient at). Frequently, Reese just puts these right back up regardless of where she's facing, how she's standing, etc. Work on positioning, squaring (if possible) and following-through. Also, I think she's got to get that release point up higher. She gets blocked too often for someone as tall and athletic as she is. Lot of teaching and repetitions will help.

Your last line interested me, so I did some morning-coffee investigating, courtesy of Her Hoop Stats and the details of Richard Cohen.

Free agents: Cheyenne Parker-Tyus (unrestricted free agent), Aerial Powers (unrestricted free agent), Tina Charles (uncoreable unrestricted free agent), Lorela Cubaj (reserved), Maya Caldwell (reserved).

Under contract for 2025: Jordin Canada, Allisha Gray, Nia Coffey, Rhyne Howard, Haley Jones, Laeticia Amihere, Naz Hillmon.

When GM Dan Padover made this hire, he surely knew of Smesko's on-court mission (three's and layups) and must've thought he multiple players who could play that way.

- Look at the "Under contract" players, I think all of them -- particularly Jordin Canada, Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray -- are tailor-made for this. Canada with running downhill; Howard for the bombs and Gray for both.

Hillmon and Amihere are slightly undersized big, but both are extremely athletic and can jump, which will help in this system.

If there's anyone, that might not be an outward fit, it's Haley Jones, whose primarily a mid-range player. Could se be offered up to Golden State in the expansion draft?

- As for the "Free Agents"
The big decision, of course, is Tina Charles, who did well this year, but in a somewhat glacial half-court offense that benefited her style. Mid-range and occasional three-pt. pops. Hmmm. Depending on options, might be time to move onto a rebounding center who can get up and down the court and/or doesn't need the ball (Brionna Jones?). On the other hand, could sign Charles to a one-year and see how it works out.

A wonderful story by a wonderful lady. Thanks for sharing.

Seattle Storm Investigating Its Own Coaching Staff for Alleged Player Mistreatment

The intrepid Annie Costabile of the Chicago Sun-Times (who also broke the Stephanie White break-up with the Conn. Sun) reports this. Apparently, it caught the WNBA off its guard, too.
Let's see what happens, but could there be yet another open position?
Posted Costabile's twitter and an MSN article based on that.

Man, this off-season is definitely not boring this year. This isn't good however. Stories like this depress me as you'd think people would be learning from previous examples of bad coaching behaviour.

It’s a mess but… diggins once again is in the middle of a hot mess

Since the private Storm report hasn't been filed, released and/or leaked, I'm going to post what leading WNBA beat reporters have thus far, which is merely that there is an investigation into the coaching staff that was brought about by "multiple" players. Here are two such articles, one by Annie Costabile -- who broke news of the story -- and Michael Voepel of ESPN who, as you know, covers the W.

As you know, the gist of the story is multiple players allegedly charged that the coaching staff (Quinn, Chatman, etc.) were mistreating them during the season. Neither of the articles makes no mention of specific players at this point, so it's hard to see how any one player is "in the middle of a hot mess" at this point. Unless, of course, that poster has inside information. If so, why not post it?

Thanks for adding something factual to the discussion.
It's published that Diggins-Smith signed with Seattle for two main reasons: to play with Jewell Loyd and play under Noelle Quinn, with whom she's had a longstanding relationship. Judging by this article, it might appear that Diggins-Smith might be siding on whatever Quinn was trying to get across. S D-S prefers hard leadership, ranging from what she grew up, who she is and her coach at Notre Dame. Last week, she talked to the ND team and said the first step in responsibility is "looking in the mirror."

Now, having said that, this article still doesn't answer the question: what was going on with the coaching staff?
Or, as one commenter said:
"This article instead of explaining what happened with the staff and Quinn, emphasizes the bad temper of SDS or the fact that Nneka is a mediator, but not a leader. Tell us about the staff and Quinn and what they did against the players!"

We'll see what happens next.

Sad. I heard about this on Friday and was surprised that it was not posted sooner. The exit interviews, players that were able to talk or shown, spoke highly of Coach Quinn and what type of "caring, competitive, and supportive" environment/culture that Coach provides. Then this story drops a few weeks after the exit interviews. Just sad because now it becomes a finger pointing match and a whole lot of attacking a person's character. We will see what develops from this investigation.

Yikes... Am I a sick b@st@rd that my first reaction was, "Nneka, leave the drama behind and sign with Golden State!"?

I didn’t read the articles posted and assumed it was mentioned. Guess I should never do that
Making assumptions on what a media outlet reports is never a good thing, especially nowadays. None of the major media outlets have reported anything specific in comparison to the blog report you shared.

There isn't a thread for Athletes Unlimited but this caught my attention. Nurse hasn't played during the off-season since suffering her ACL injury. Will be interesting to see how she juggles this with her broadcasting side gig in Canada.

Well.......Nneka will certainly leave, SDS will continue to..... Either be fiery or self-centerrd and complaining depending on your point of view I supposed. Got to see her act here in Phoenix so my perspective is the latter. What is certain is this this had not made Seattle better and the this I'm referring to is SDS.

"According to CSS reports, Skylar Diggins-Smith has been at the center of several heated outbursts during practice, with her fiery comments—often laced with profanity—aimed at teammates."

"Diggins-Smith, in a statement vented out, came off as passive-aggressive.".

My evaluation of SD in her time in Phoenix was that she was hostile aggressive or aggressive aggressive or judgmental aggressive nothing she ever said came off as passive...... And she was never hesitant about sharing her aggressive aggressive views which was apparent on the bench with DT on a video that's been widely circulated.

This kerflunkle shows that head coach's responsibility goes Way beyond X's and O's and in fact their ability to manage these talented players with huge egos and in some cases very warped views will determine their success as well as the team's success. Obviously Quinn has ways to go in this important area of coaching

Probably because major news outlets invest very very little time (zero) in the offseason of any woman's sport including the WNBA

SDS might be running out of teams to try and join if she’s out of Seattle next year. Side note: if Quinn is out in Seattle, NY, Vegas, Minnesota and Phoenix will be the only franchises to retain their head coaches.

... Which is wild, because three of those four have won multiple championships, and the fourth just finished his first season. As far as coaching in the W is concerned, given the insane growth and paired insane leadership flux, it's like just like Dickens said in A Tale of Two Cities: "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times"...
