Wow, what a year. I had surgery and radiation treatment early January (all is good). Figured that would be worst part of year, then Covid hits. Everyone's life changes, work schedule changes, sporting events/seasons cancelled and much more. Really hoping for normalcy soon.

With that said, I am looking forward to following this years baseball team. I think we can have a very good season. I am sure there will be some rescheduling/postponements, but hopefully we can complete a relatively full season.

As always, I would like to thank all of you that post in off-season. I do very little posting , during that time. But I read (and enjoy) all your updates on players and recruiting. You guys are the backbone of this forum. Below is my chart to follow the teams progress. I know chart is not perfect, but I believe it does give us an idea on how we are trending. If you see any errors, please let me know.

In past, I taught 37 wins would get us in. I am thinking that we need a few more, because Big East competition is a step (or so) below AAC. I do think our early out of conference schedule helps. Playing 7 games vs Virginia and Texas Tech is huge. Also (as usual) we play many away or neutral site games. That helps our RPI.

I hope people enjoy this chart. It keeps me interested in every game. Thanks for all of you that post updates during games, that is sometimes the only way I can keep up with game action. Hoping for a great ( and normal) season.

Go HUSKIES

In terms of the number of wins needed to make the NCAA tournament, it would seem that UConn baseball's northeast out of conference schedule is probably a bit stronger than what was in the past. Right now currently on the schedule UConn is playing multiple games against the better teams in the region such as Boston College, URI, Northeastern, and Bryant. Teams such as UMass Lowell, Yale, and Holy Cross are not currently on the schedule.

Glad you're feeling better. Went through most of 2020 with my wife on chemo. In an odd way, the pandemic made our life seem normal. Everybody was on restricted activity.

As to UConn and the NCAA. Does the season start on time? Do we continue to have Covid disruptions? The expanded roster will help some teams a lot and others just a little. But which teams gain the biggest advantage? Lots of unknowables at this point.

Your first two criteria are likely not good metrics in the 2021 season. There is no way in knowing how many games will be played this year. RPI will not be a good metric this year with the lack of non conference games in leagues such as the big ten.

I don’t see the NCAA throwing out RPI as a measuring stick. While I’m not sure there is 100% consensus - it seems like a prevailing thought process is the B1G proceeds @ their own risk.

It’ll be interesting to see how it evolves...

Hopefully your wife is doing well. What a crazy year. Lots of uncertainty with your above questions. Hopefully season can be as normal as possible

Agree. Who knows how how many games we play and how that affects RPI. But didn’t know a better way to set criteria. Maybe winning percentage?

I would say best to stick to the old chart. Some sort of modifications can be made depending on cancellations affecting the number of games played. I would think RPI would still play a big role.

Never happy with a loss, but in reality can't be that disappointed. Some Random thoughts below.

(1) tough opening up year vs a top 5/16 team on the road. But I think this only helps us down the road.

(2) Our pitching was outstanding. Casparius looks like he is the real deal. We definitely have a beast as our Friday night starter. Favieri and especially Haus also pitched extremely well.

(3) Pitching is usually ahead of hitting early in season, as witnessed by only 7 hits in total for game. But I have confidence in our hitting. We will produce runs.

(4) Reggie Crawford with 2 hits (1 HR), was a bright spot. Looking forward to his production this year.

(5) Always root to at least win weekend series, and we still have a chance. But I would be satisfied (not happy), with a 1-2 series record vs Virginia on road.

Go Huskies

As Coach Penders and many people on this board stated, it was an ugly game / win. But with that said, I would love to be saying the same thing later this afternoon after today's game.

(1) C. Fedko (4 hits) and C. Brown (2 hits, 4 RBI's) were huge for us yesterday. Especially Brown with a couple of clutch hits.

(2) J. Simeone pitched well. With Ben on Fridays and Joe on Saturdays, we should be in good shape. Have not heard who is starting today. Should be interesting decision. Does anyone know?

(3) Need to tighten up defense, and cut down on strike outs. Hopefully this is just product of being early in season.

(4) Love hearing Chris Jones call a baseball game.

(5) Will not be posting RPI rankings below, until later in March.

(6) I said yesterday, I would be satisfied ( not happy) with a 1-2 record this weekend. But now I am getting greedy. Lets get a huge victory today and a series win vs a Top 5/16 team on road to start season.

Satisfied (not happy) with a 1-2 start vs one of the better teams in college baseball. Over 3 games we had a minus 2 run differential. I think we found that our starting weekend pitching is going to be solid to very good. Need to cut down on errors ( to many unearned runs given up) and our strike outs.

I think we have a good shot of winning next weekends series. I feel very good about this team.

Go Huskies

I know, I know but it just came out... UConn @ #14 after opening weekend:

2021 College Baseball RPI (Live) | WarrenNolan.com

As you know, after three games against just one team, it's a totally meaningless ranking. Having said that, it does illustrate the point that we did ourselves absolutely no harm going to a ranked team and winning 1 of 3 close games.

So. Miss, certainly based on their opening weekend, is not near that level. Now it's time to win a series before getting to Coastal and Texas Tech.

Funny thing is, I checked out the Warren Nolan website after Sunday's game at some point. At that time UConn's RPI according to the website was about 103 (I don't remember the exact number, but it was slightly over 100). Virginia at the time was somewhere around 90, now they are about 73 having played another game. Amazing how much things can change in the opening days of the season with very few results to go on.

This is one situation 2here being in the New Big East will absolutely not help us. The NBE is a 1 bid league. So we really do need to put together a solid non-conference resume because once we get into league play it is absolute dreck.

The early rankings for some conferences give them an advantage....

In current Top 25...

SEC...9 teams
ACC...8
B-12...4

Yes, in addition to the too many walks issued by UConn pitchers (Casparius and Haus), there were three hit by pitches by them as well. So there was lots of extra traffic on the bases, especially in the 5th and 8th innings where USM scored multiple runs in each of those innings. By the way, USM only had 6 hits, but with all the extra bases runners due to the freebies issued by UConn, those hits were certainly magnified.

Read Dbmill's optimistic post in another thread and totally agree. Not happy with a 1-4 start, but it seems like we could have won each game. Maybe a clutch hit here, couple less walks there and all of a sudden our record could be reversed.

At beginning of year if we were told our record would be 3-3, most of us would have taken it with the teams (on road) we played. So by no means am I calling today a must win. But 2-4 is much better then 1-5, and only off by 1 game on that 3-3 record.

Either way, I really think we are in for a very good season. Just a few things have to get corrected.

Go Huskies !!!!

Ok, we got our much needed win. As usual it was a bit nerve racking, but we will take it. Peterson pitched great and Crawford was huge. Again need to correct a few things, but hoping next week we put it together. Winning 3 of 4 next weekend would get us to .500.

Weekend always seem better, when we win on Friday. Great pitching performance by Ben C, and nice experience getting Favieri an inning. Should pay dividends down the road. Lets get another win tomorrow.

Tough loss yesterday. Our pitching has been fine (for most part) all year, the offense really needs to turn it around. Just getting balls in play and not striking out would be a start. We now have 5 losses. Four games by 1 run, One game by 2 runs. A little better / clutch hitting and the record would be a lot different.

Was hoping for a 3-1 weekend. Still possible. Lets get those bats going.

Off topic. In past have always gone to the Warren Nolan website for RPI info and other stats. This year when I go on, it says that the site is not secure. Having been hacked a few months ago, this makes me nervous. Any of you notice this? Also what others sites would you recommend for reliable RPI info.

Thanks in advance.
