As others have posted many UConn fans pick 1 marquee away game each season and travel to that 1 game, along with a bowl. I've been to games at RU in 06, 08, 10, and will be there Saturday. I could care less if Rutgers fans swear and yell at me, I know I intive it by my gameday attire. As long as nobody hits me or throws a battery at me I'm good. That has not happened at RU or anywhere else for that matter. I don't care about tailgating either so when people say they don't want to drive down to a noon game because they will have to leave super early to tailgate, it just does not make sense to me. I go to games to support my team...that's it. It takes me no more than 2.5 hours to drive down there from central CT, so a noon game does not present a problem at all. Parking isn't an issue if you park at the RAC and take the bus.
I think part of the reason we don't travel well is because we struggle to fill our own stadium with 40,000 people. I would guess at least 30% of our fan base attends games more for the tailgating and the socialising than for the actual game itself. The fan base just needs more time to grow before we can send 7,000 people to every away game. I wish we were at that level, but as long as we can put a winning product on the field year after year, or fan base will grow more dedicated and travel numbers will go up.
