I don't see any current or recent FBS HC who's not on Viagra and Lipitor taking this job. And I'd want someone with actual HC experience and a bit of life left in them. So my list starts with Scotty Walden of Austin Peay. To me, he's exactly the mad scientist UConn needs to make games fun again and bring a breath of fresh air to Storrs. Only 30, his offenses are dynamite.

Others I'd consider in addition to Bob Chesney:
  • Brian Bohannon, Kennesaw St. (50)
  • Jay Hill, Weber St. (46)
  • Josh Conklin, Wofford (42)
  • Matt Entz, ND State (48)
  • Scott Abell, Davidson (51)
  • Bob Surace, Princeton (53)
  • Willie Simmons, Florida A&M (40)
  • Troy Taylor, Sacramento St. (53)
  • Bobby Hauck, Montana (57)

If we hire a defensive oriented HC, my next call would be to Ryan McCarthy at CCSU to become OC. I believe McCarthy only makes like $137K as HC there, so doubling his salary might get shake him loose.

Diaco buyout money is off the books. Can pay 1.5-2 mil for a coach which is more than any in the MAC and match AAC schools. So money talks. We need 1) excitement 2) innovation.

Whoever they hire needs to be able to recruit in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, DC, Florida and reach into Texas.

I would like some of the names I put forward last night.
Charlie Weis is a OC
Brian Brohm is OC at Purdue
Joe Moorhead OC at Oregon but might be looking for something bigger.

or a younger FCS coach who has had success who can bring in a solid staff.

Bill O'Brien is my #1 choice
I think he can get a P5 gig after this year if he wants a college HC job. That is where the Saban tree goes.

... Interesting ...
I think he can do for us what he did for Penn State before trying to take the Patriots job after Belichick retires (if he ever does). And he makes 1.1 million at Alabama - I bet we could push 2 million.

I want a young and hungry coach. I can live with some mistakes. I don't want a retread (Edsall/Pasqualoni) or a big time assistant who seems to have been passed over at one too many jobs he applied for (Bob Diaco). I would take a young OC or DC from basically any program if he was hungry and smart enough. He can get his experience on the job.

Bobby Hauck is a terrible FBS coach.

This is who we need to talk to and ask him how much money he will require to come up to Storrs for five years. Jamey Chadwell - Coastal Carolina Head Coach. His current salary is not that high.

Good call. I was looking at winning FCS coaches with (mostly) more than one team. Chadwell has that, he's only 44 and reportedly makes only $850K.

I'll throw Phil Longo, North Carolina's OC, into the mix. He is 53, and has a nice amount of success at the schools he has been at. He has Head Coach experience, and has been through the ranks -- most recently at NC, Ole Miss, Sam Houston State, Slippery Rock, and Youngstown State. He is a Jersey guy might be able to be talked into coming back to the Northeast. Phil Longo - Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach - Staff Directory - University of North Carolina Athletics
Wow! Doesn’t have much HCing experience but his offenses puts up crazy numbers pretty much everywhere he’s been an OC. Interesting candidate.

Jason Candle - Toledo HC - FBS MAC
Sean Lewis - Kent St. HC - FBS MAC
Tyson Helton - Western Kentucky HC - CUSA

Repeating
Brian Bohanan - Kennesaw State HC - FCS Big South
Josh Conklin - Wofford HC - FCS Southern

Brian Polian - Notre Dame STC

Phil Longo would be an awesome get!

His name surfaced on the rumored short list for UCF head coaching search.

For those w/o a sub, can you list the names? I saw Moorhead, but that's it. And I'm personally not all that interested in Moorhead, although I imagine it'll make the "get someone with ties to UConn" crowd happy.

Definitely think this goes without saying, but I hope whoever it is can keep most of the 2022 class in tact and limit transfers. They’ve put together a decent class for 2022 so it would suck to see that fall apart, but obviously with a new coaching staff comes player turnover.
