DALLAS (AP) — A starter on Duke's 2010 national championship team purchased nearly $100,000 in custom jewelry that season from a New York firm that caters to professional athletes and is now suing him for failing to pay the balance of what he owes.

Lance Thomas purchased five pieces of diamond jewelry at a cost of $97,800 on Dec. 21, 2009, in the middle of his senior season, according the lawsuit. Documents included with the suit indicate he made a $30,000 down payment and received $67,800 in credit from the firm, the balance that remains unpaid.

....

Thomas, 24, is from Scotch Plains, N.J., and played at prep power St. Benedict's, according to his biography on the Duke website. The site said his mother is a manager at a Ford plant in New Jersey.

Watch the crack NCAA enfotcement squad send a Duke alum to nose around Durham. I guarantee that a report will come back to Emmert saying UConn had done wrong. After all, Thomas lived a state away from CT.

The NCAA is going to hammer them hard, right after they issue a decision on the Myron Piggie-Corey Magette payoff.

So, after the dust settles, maybe our 2011 championship win was over defending national champion Butler. ;)

It is possible his family has enough money for him to put 30K down. It also wouldn't be unheard of to get a loan for the rest...

The NCAA just announced that there is no reason to suspect Duke of any violation as a result of an investigation that they will begin there investigation next week. It will be led by Mike Krzyezewski.

Jay Williams brokers these deals including this 1. We are not talking about Brokers Reserve Whiskey here either that cost between 6 and 7 dollars for a 5th. The NCAA is on ass-hole patrol per the usual.

The NCAA has promised a swift resolution just as soon as Lead Investigator Richard Vitale submits his report.

Since large credit lines were issued to non-athlete Duke students, the NCAA will find no jurisdiction as this isn't purely an athletic enforcement issue. Wasn't Thomas that stiff that Rutgers fans were pining for?

Terms of the purchase were 30K up front, and the balance within the next 15 days. So essentially he had to come up with 100K as an amateur.

Soooooo...given the fairness and impartiality of the men running the NCAA, won't Duke have to vacate its national championship in 2010 and all its wins from the discovery of this infraction in 2010? The Duke Board has been one of the most vociferous in calling "UCon and Jim Calgooon" a "dirty" program. I would be delighted to see them made hypocrites.

We're probably grasping for straws here, but if Calhoun ever tied the golden boy K for championships, that would be a great, great day.

Jay Williams (Matt Nochimson) had a bag full of money ($25k) in large bills for Kevin Love (Nate Miles) at a dinner in LA (Cleveland) while his alma mater Duke (UConn) was recruiting him. Jay (Matt) was trying to induce him to hire him as his agent.

I recall that Ryan Boatwright's mom had to provide the NCAA with a penny-by-penny breakdown of where the money came from to purchase Christmas presents for her children.

That's the sort of questionable activity that the NCAA needs to stamp out of college basketball.

A player coming up with $30K in cash plus a $67k loan in order to purchase jewelry? That sort of behavior is so normal, Duke should receive a bonus National Championship for having a player involved in it.

So many issues here.
1. Interesting business strategy to say, "30k up front, 60k within 2 weeks." It's a "hook 'em hard" strategy with a lot of risk. They could easily say, "come back in 2 weeks when you have all 90k," but they don't, because the impulse-buy urge would be gone, as would the sale.

2. Was this guy a projected NBA player when he got this loan?

3. I hate Dook as much or, more likely, more than the next guy, but this occurred with a couple of months left in his senior season. Odds of the Dook program having anything to do with it directly - almost zero. What would be the point? The guy's career is about over. Would a booster front this money? Maybe, but, again, seems unlikely.

4. 30 grand is not a crazy amount of money. 90k is getting there quick, but he didn't end up coming up with the bread.

5. I'm in a bit of a glass Tate house, so I'll be careful throwing stones, but this is the second Dookie in a few years who has defaulted on his obligations. Perhaps they should have an ethics course just for the basketball players.
