What are you binge watching?

Not sure how this popped into my feed, but this is a 20 minute critique of Taylor Sheriden from an above average youtube movie critic that shreds Sheriden as a hack.

In Taylor’s world if you aren’t a billionaire or have a big inheritance then you get to live in the bunkhouse with Rip.

It’s amazing how good Sicario, Hell or High Water and Wind River are and how bad the TV shows are.

I've never seen his shows, they don't appeal to me but those movies are great. Hell or High Water was so damn good, I'm surprised so many people haven't seen it. So many people don't know Wind River either and that's also an excellent movie about a very real thing which happens on that reservation and other reservations.

If his shows suck he probably just figured out the formula which he knew would appeal to the brain-dead masses. Doesn't sound like there's any substance to the material but he can spin all sorts of other shows off of it.

Sicario is entertaining if you don't think too much about what is happening or how sexist the movie is. Hell or High Water is pretty good, although I am not sure I would like it as much if I watched it again.

"Running Point" Season 2 just dropped on Netflix. Watched a couple episodes. Breezy entertainment.

I didn't even know Sheridan was behind Sicario. Couple of thoughts in response... first, I wouldn't be at all shocked if that task force or whatever you call it was sexist as all get out IRL. Second, Blunt's character is probably the best-written female character in all of Sheridan's work that I'm aware of.

I don’t care if it’s sexist. Blunt was miscast in that role. 100lb women aren’t capable of being doorkickers. Probably the only weakness in that movie.

The whole idea of a cunning plan to get the cartels fighting amongst themselves was great. Then seeing one of their victims getting revenge was even better.

I would say she was probably the worst casting decision by far.

The task force didn’t care about her being a woman. They were focused on getting the job done. I don’t think they would have cared if she had blue hair and a nose ring.

Blunt was in phenomenal shape, and not close to the biggest problem with that movie.

Narcos Mexico covers the same ground much more effectively, with the added benefit that it is true in Narcos Mexico.

Sheriden ripped off real life, turned the Mexicans into stereotypes, and made the female lead into a sex object that needs to be protected by the men. Sheriden is a big fan of male characters needing to save their women from s*xual assault. He is a creep, and there will be a backlash against him soon.

I just finished Jury Duty: Company Retreat. Treads similar ground as the original Jury Duty, but in a different setting. Again, the producers found a "hero" that is incredibly likeable. Fun show with plenty of laughs.

She’s too small. Those people look jacked. She needed about 6 months of CrossFit. It was the only thing that didn’t seem authentic. I can see why normies would fall for it though.

She's there as the FBI presence that provides cover for Graver's team. I wouldn't think she'd need to be jacked to be in the FBI in her role. Just in good enough shape to pass their physical requirements, which it looks like she would. I've seen many depictions of FBI females in much worse shape.

And Alejandro, being the macho Mexican, would either kill her or protect her. After she signed off on the operation, it was the latter. I believe the ending was simply to show Alejandro still had a tiny bit of conscience, when telling her to go back to where the law still applies.

I'm amused that in a thread about Sheridan being a sexist creep, the most sexist thing said is that Blunt looks like she couldn't do a pushup.

Just my "normie" opinion, misántropo.

She’s literally described as a doorkicker in the movie dude. I’ve seen it like 12 times.

Get over it.

And in the movie the funny thing is they weren’t breaking the law as long as she was there, since the DoD and CIA provided capabilities that the FBI doesn’t have. It’s signed off by the President.

Her character should have been stuffed in a locker for her own good.

Your Friends and Neighbors (Apple TV) Watched season one. John Hamm is a high end hedge guy who gets fired and makes a ton of bad and criminal choices which naturally result in an ever more horrible spiral. But Hamm is so entitled he just keeps making more bad choices. The series is set in Westchester where Hamm is part of a shallow, vapid, ultra-rich enclave. No one in the series is very likeable (I kind of liked Lu, the no nonsense fence) and the shallow vapid characters are somewhat interesting. My wife is enjoying it more than I. James Marsden joins the cast in season two and he seems perfect for the neighborhood.

I have to see Sicario again. The only woman I remember being in the movie is Emily Blunt. The whole point seemed to be she was the naive by the books federal government person going into a land where nothing is by the books. She was in way over her head and her naivety and meek look was our lens as a viewer into a world we could never truly understand where nothing is black and white and by the books. She was a hugely important part of the storytelling. I'm sure there's other women in it, family of the cartel members but the world of Mexican cartels and the elite tactical units trying to take them down is a man's world and it takes a certain type of man.

It's incredibly rare for women to be a part of elite tactical units. As you point out you aren't going to see a physically weak woman like Emily Blunt in that role in real life so suspension of disbelief has to kick in as a viewer. It was used for the storytelling and wasn't believable but I don't see how it was sexist.

Would you cast Stephen Hawking as a Viking?
Not as a player, but I would think as an advisor he'd have worked miracles on blocking and coverage schemes.

Anyway, I think Emily would kick your ass in a fight.

She's supposed to be an FBI HRT Commander. But like she's like 100 lbs and also impossibly naive. I agree that there is nothing sexist about it.

The people in these units these days look like linebackers. I think they just wanted Emily Blunt in the movie. Maybe they should have gotten her Strong Lifts subscription and some creatine.

If you still think a 100 lb woman could beat any man in fight then you must think Marvel movies are historical fiction.

Well, she's trained in martial arts. Are you?

A simple Google search will give you many examples of a smaller women taking down men larger than they are..

Also, it's well established in the movie threads I have a low opinion of Marvel/DC flicks - and the adults who watch them.

It's always simple to tell the people who have never seriously lifted weights in their life. They think people who are really skinny and show visible abs are physically strong/jacked and they think guys like The Rock and Alan Ritchson look the way they do just off of training really hard, personal trainers, and eating chicken and broccoli.

Of course Emily Blunt isn't beating up any active normal sized men within a realistic age range and of course someone who looks like her wouldn't be kicking down doors in an elite tactical unit taking down drug cartels.

It's the movies.

While that may be true. I don't believe any 100 pound woman could --in reality-- take a punch. Not that anyone should test that theory. Tom Cruise is like 5-6, 150. It's all make believe. Yoda is like 1 foot tall and 30 pounds and he beat up Christopher Lee in the movies.

Women can’t bulk up like linebackers, for the most part. But Blunt did look muscular in Edge of Tomorrow (love that movie for its clever script) where she once again played a kickass woman

The gear she'd carry would weigh nearly as much as her.

Just stop. You're out of your depth here. Go watch Starfleet Academy.

You sound just like the Marvel fans here.

I'm betting Zoo is not a representative male specimen. Seems soft to me.

ftr, was once clowning around with a guy 8" shorter and 70# lighter than me. He was trying to show me some moves he learned in dojo. He wasnt even at brown belt status. Unfortunately he didn't pull his thrust early enough and tagged me in the solar plexus. I went down in a heap and it took a couple minutes to get wind back.

Im a believer that martial arts training is an equalizer. You've probably seen MMA footage of smaller women taking down larger guys.

I don't get the chauvinism with y'all. Type of stuff you'd usually hear from in-cels.

As 8899 used to say, "Sounds like you're projecting."

This conversation went from Blunt couldn't do such and such in Sicario to no 100 lb woman could win a fight against a "normal" man, to somehow invoking Alan Ritchson to prove I don't know what point.

I'd say I think I'm on solid ground here. Wish I knew an MMA trained female fighter to take on SJ for a large wager. But I know SJ wouldn't pay up anyway 😿

I assume you're joking with these posts and throwing around the chauvinism word but I do remember old timers in CT back in the day honestly thinking the undefeated UConn women's basketball team could beat the UConn men's basketball team. The reality is Geno could put together a group of guys on campus who could beat the undefeated women's basketball team.

A guy throwing you around obviously has nothing to do with anything.

Just going off the physical deficit alone it's unbelievably difficult for women to overcome the strength deficit they're at. That's why there was always much different physical standards. The strength isn't some negligible difference or some 30% or 50% difference you may read somewhere, it's massive.

I've been going to gyms most of my life and between the average male and female lifter you can expect a 100% difference in bench press. That goes for every other upper body lift.

There's hardly any women on any elite tactical teams and there's never been a woman Navy Seal.

Women are better than men at a lot of things and I wouldn't argue against someone who said women are better than men at most things but this is beyond silly.
