Week of 1/15/24 Other Games

Is it too crazy to say that Kadary cost Seton Hall the game with the iso ball in OT? Has there been a less efficient triple double?

That clutch 3 that Alexander made…that the textbook example of what the refs are supposed to call as an offensive foul. Clearly flailed his legs out towards the defender & flopped.

Instead, they called the one on Newton the other night for doing nothing.

Big East needs to clean house with their officiating crews.
Yea definitely an unnatural kickout but the SH defender not falling down probably saved him

A
So getting 90 percent of the calls weren’t enough lol.
I don’t care, but apparently that’s how the SH fans felt, by the sound of it.

It's not too crazy, but otoh, if you've got Kadary's history and skill, you're probably thinking you're gonna make some of those layups.

That was an exciting game to watch, but man. The refs in this league are so bad. Not to say that every game in the past was called perfectly, but one out of every three or so games is practically unwatchable. The drama in Creighton/Hall was fantastic, but the style of play allowed by the refs is frankly embarrassing. They're letting Seton Hall just clobber on Creighton all day long. That is not good basketball.

I don't like a leg kickout like that being an offensive foul. Just a no call is fine. As long as you never call it a defensive foul if contact is made then the players who do it purposely will stop because there will be no benefit. Making the refs have to determine if it's natural or not just add more calls for them to get wrong and be subjective about. Even if it's natural and contact is made, the shot is already up and not affected. Just no call no matter what if the leg is out.

If you watch a lot of college basketball you'll see the refs all around kind of suck. Basketball is a very hard game to call and there just aren't that many people on the planet that are great at it. I really don't think it's just a Big East thing like we always harp on here. The best refs are in the NBA and every level below that is hit or miss.

Kalkbrenner altered a lot his shots. Kalkbrenner was outstanding this game.
Kalkbrenner was great but most of those misses were Kalbrenner being in his head because they were basically clean layups he was shorting.

Man that Creighton game was fun. Good thing UConn wasn’t playing in it or else I would have been insufferable

Great game for Kalkbrenner. Dominated the paint

Kadary is Seton Hall basketball encapsulated. Not the most skilled or talented, but an absolute bulldog who is getting to where he wants whether you’re there or not. 21 points, but 32 shots to get it. Damn

Five guys played 50+ minutes today

Not necessary for a warning to be issued and then (when it continues) technical on the home team.

It added to the chaos, but yes, absolutely indicative of a referee crew that lost control of a game.
I don’t disagree they didn’t have control, but regarding the fans, the warning was crap to begin with. They were not throwing anything or going on the court.

100%, on the incompetency of these clowns. Somewhere along the line Driscoll's crew decided that the rules of the game ( blatant hand checking and none stop fouling) by the less talented team ( Seton Hall) is just fine & no longer matters. And refs manipulating the outcome is part of the rule book, SMH! The Big East needs need a sitdown with all of them (alot of Big East refs on the rule book inconsistency ) or a suspension until the get it into their thick heads that allowing a one team hack fast is not acceptable. Or trying to make up the foul count (another scheme BE refs pull) when it's clear as day that only one team is the aggressor.

Don't agree at all, exhibit A is that once the NCAA's start they all step up and call the games right. Because even BE refs know they won't advance if they disregard the rule book. As we all know and saw last year .......as Dan Hurley said, once again, recently.

I feel like the refs lose control of the game once a week in this conference. They let the game become a street fight and then wonder why their warnings don't do anything. Karaban took an elbow to the forehead last week, no call. Ashworth the same thing today. When a player is walking around dripping blood on the court, that's usually a pretty good indication he got fouled.

Listened to the Creighton game on Sirius radio Creighton station. The announcer was going nuts yelling that one ref was "garbage" for calling a foul on Creighton and not calling a foul on Ashworth at the end of regulation! I guess we aren't the only ones with stripe issues!!

While it's a game nobody cares about, it does feature a familiar name scoring a career high.
Good for Diggins. I wish him luck. No ill will. He quickly realized he was in over his head at UConn and transferred out quickly and opened a spot for Hurley to fill with someone who could contribute more.

Wow, fun game. Seton Hall was shafted. Hope they win. Great Big East basketball today!!!!

You can never say Seton Hall was shafted. They get away with murder every game. I mean I get they play hard for Holloway and pretty good defense but it helps when you give guys like Wusu and #10 fouls each a game but only calm a percentage of them. This was once again a horribly officiated game but fun to watch. Happy the Jays finished it.

They aren’t bad and their last 2 losses were without Matt Cross who’s their best player and we’d love to have. Physically tough, smart, good rebounder and can score. Martin not doing a bad job considering how many decent players he lost in the portal (Luis at StJs, Fernandes and Gapare).

I'm actually okay with how bad the Big East refs are (presumably) biased against UConn. It's certainly frustrating in the moment, but if IIRC, Calhoun built teams who could seemingly shift playing styles based on opponent. The elite years could bang bodies like a football game vs Pittsburgh and run and gun vs. Texas and Duke.
IOW, they take what the are given.

5 vs. 8 in conference play can only help in Out of Conference games, and if one hasn't noticed l, the NCAA Tournament typically assigns OoC refs.

Here is the thing. Some observers will see both fan bases complain and conclude the refs are seeing it even and fair, so the refs must be doing a good job. In fact both fan bases could be right. In that case, both fan bases can and should complain, if the officiating is poor.

I know I will get flamed for this, but I almost always, not always, see the officials as unsung heroes. Without them there can't be a game played. Also, I don't criticize the officials all that much as I think calls over the course of many games even out (notice I didn't say "a game" necessarily).

Having said that, they are not above reproach and they must keep their integrity intact meaning no connections to sports betting and to not hold grudges. The Creighton-Seton Hall game today by the officials,... let's just say it wasn't their finest work. Seton Hall was getting away with so much. Greg McDermott had every reason to be pissed off today. I expect the home team to get the favorable calls in basketball, football, and hockey. However, the home team advantage with officiating shouldn't be so enormous (i.e. Providence at the AMP last year versus UConn).

I meant Davis #14 nice player but if refereed as it should be he would’ve fouled out early in regulation. Whoever he’s guarding he holds and stops with a forearm any drive bys. They’re tough and play hard but refs suck!
