Week 6 Dec 11 to Dec 17, 2023

Eastern Washington was up on Cal by double digits in the 3rd quarter, but the Bears outscored them 32-11 in Q4. Wow, where did that come from? Berkeley won by 8. I don't know what to make of them this year. Last several years they've had a good record in OOC, but get into conference play and struggle to win games. I think they are competent, but it's hard to see them finishing any higher than 9th or 10th in the Pac. I think EWU is pretty solid as well, very veteran team, gave Gonzaga quite a tussle a couple weeks ago.

Undefeated Colorado St. has a fight on their hands, tied w/ Long Beach St. just starting 2nd half.

Are we sure Santa Clara beat Oregon by almost 40? Playing Oregon St. tonight, they can't hit a 3 to save their lives and might not crack the 40 point barrier.

Gardner-Webb left the ranks of the winless teams, picked up a W against App. St.

Oregon St. beat Santa Clara 80-52, and they were going well into their bench throughout the game.

Long Beach St. knocked off Colorado St. by 1. Rams had a couple looks from near the rim at the end, but couldn't get it to go in .

Gardner-Webb left the ranks of the winless teams, picked up a W against App. St.
Xavier did as well, beating Southern Illinois Edwardsville by 25.

Teams still winless:
Little Rock Trojans 0-8
UT Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros 0-9
Alabama State Lady Hornets 0-8
Hampton Pirates 0-7
UMass Lowell River Hawks 0-10
Stonehill Skyhawks 0-10
Chicago State Cougars 0-17

There are other teams that aren't technically winless, but their only wins have come against non-D1 teams. For example, the McNeese Cowgirls are listed as 4-7 but those 4 wins were against Dillard University (NAIA), North American University (NAIA), Ecclesia College (NCCAA), and Centenary College (D-III).

Chicago State's best chances for a win over a D-I team are coming up in a home-and-away against the Long Island University Sharks, Jan. 15 and Feb. 5.

For a win of any sort, Chicago State stands an even better chance on Jan. 10 against Kuyper College, whose athletics program is in its very first year of existence.

To be fair, Grand Valley State is one of the top teams in Division II, and therefore better than quite a few D-I teams.
As an addendum to this, Massey actually ranks Grand Valley State #3 in Division II and #173 across all divisions of college basketball, which would place it just above the 50th percentile among D-I teams.

Wow. 2 games against NAIA schools? I don't even know what NCCAA is, is that a juco?

Seton Hall is thrashing UNLV. Is this gonna be a weekly thing, a new team cracks the Top 25, then immediately loses and falls out of the polls again?

Aside from the UConn-Louisville and Baylor-Miami games, the Seton Hall-UNLV matchup was one I really had my eye on today. I thought SHU might win at home, but I didn't predict a 30-point margin.

This was a hugely important win for SHU. They lost a 2OT game to Princeton and had zero significant wins before this (best wins were over East Carolina and Rutgers).

Azana Baines, after stops at Duke and Virginia Tech, is finally having herself a year in her 5th season of play.

Seton Hall defeats UNLV( #9 NET) 84-54. Intrigued to see how drastically both change tomorrow.

Not major programs.

I don’t mind when below mid major teams do it. Sure, get a win, it’s fine. But no P5, especially a ranked one, should ever be scheduling out of D1.
UConn is playing a non-Div 1 team on Wednesday

The ACC is not having a good day. Louisville got thumped by UConn. Virginia lost to Wofford by 1. Clemson is threatening to lose to Georgia St. At least Georgia Tech beat Georgia.

LeMoyne beat Buffalo. Gonna be hard for the Bulls to show their faces around upstate New York after that one.

Sorry Duke fans, but how did y'all lose to Clemson? Just lost to Georgia St. At home.

So the ACC lost their conference challenges to both the SoCon and Sun Belt today.

Game-winner by Wofford's Rachael Rose to beat Virginia:

Well, that's different..... ;)
Actually, it is different.

UConn is playing a road game in Canada as a homecoming event to honor a Canadian player who is a senior this year. These homecoming games are a Geno Auriemma tradition. Safe to say he's not taking his team to Canada just to find an easy opponent. I'm sure he would've loved to schedule a D1 opponent in the Toronto area if one existed.

I doubt that Ohio State scheduled a home game vs. a D2 team for a similar reason.

I Believe Utah had a similar situation with Alissa Pili’s homecoming in Alaska.
