Week 3 preview (Nov. 23-28)

Michigan takes down Oregon State, 61-52. Somewhat surprising to me, since Michigan is still missing Amy Dilk and I just didn't think they'd have the guard play. But their defense really carried them through this game.

Naz Hillmon went for 20 and 13 (plus 7 turnovers), and Leigha Brown was big down the stretch.

Uconn’s performance against South Florida looks much better this evening. They beat Stanford and outrebounded them 52-38. Brink, who had pulled in 22 against Indiana, had 11 today while Mununga had 23(!).

It's not like Oregon State has the guard play either...

I don't have Flohoops so I haven't been able to catch these games, but tomorrows slate intrigues me, and I will definitely be checking box scores. Michigan vs Miss St., Oregon St vs Notre Dame, LSU vs Missouri St, Maryland vs Stan, WVU vs BYU are what I'll be monitoring. My BY poll is begging for mercy with the amount of edits I've made already and we still have 1 1/2 weeks before submission

It's not even noon in Texas yet, but already some eye-opening results.

Florida State falls to Purdue, 66-61 -- the second consecutive loss for the Seminoles (lost to BYU yesterday).

UCLA falls to South Dakota State, 76-66. The Bruins will play tomorrow in the 7th place game of the Gulf Coast Showcase.

Earlier today, Virginia Tech narrowly escaped UT Martin, 54-49. The Skyhawks missed 2 free throws in the final minute that would've made it a one point game.

The Jackrabbits gain back a little cred for the Summit.

Myah Selland finally got back in the lineup. She started and played 14 minutes (scoring 9 points) before leaving with a shoulder injury. This poor kid cannot away from injury for more than two seconds.

UCLA is just not a good team right now. The loss to Kent State really wasn't a fluke, if you look at the other teams they've struggled to beat (Pepperdine, UVA).

UCLA desperately needs their injured players back. UCLA just doesn't have the talent at the moment. Their UO forward transfer and the PG transfer coming back will be an immediate boost for UCLA.

Agreed they desperately need Conti and Dugalic ASAP, but really they should be doing better than they have been with Osborne, Chou, Penn, Thomas and others. That's not a lineup that should be losing to Kent State.

Crazy turnaround in the DePaul-Vandy game.

DePaul committed an unbelievable 17 turnovers in the 1st quarter, after which they trailed 26-12.

They settled down and committed only 7 turnovers in the rest of the game, and won 91-74. Sonya Morris caught fire and finished with a career high 36 points on 14-22 FG (7-9 3FG). Freshman Aneesah Morrow finished with 28 points (9-13 FG), 15 rebounds and 5 steals.

Arkansas forgot how to play defense in the first quarter, but pulls away to throttle Sam Houston 92-66. Jersey with her best game of the year so far put in 16 on 5/8 shooting, including 3/4 from deep. Ramirez led the Hogs with 17.

Cal Baptist(4-1) beats a Power 5 conference team, TCU 91-77
Top point guard in assists, and assists per game, Ane Olaeta, had 25 points and 10 assists. Olaeta now has 47 assists in 5 games.(9.4apg) I think the Notre Dame Freshman, Olivia Miles, has 46 assists, but has played one more game than Olaeta.
CBU leads nation in apg at 22.

Really great game between Oregon St and Notre Dame. ND held onto their lead and escaped with a solid W. I really like their team, they are just really young, and I also think all their post are scorers, and I'd like Mabrey and Citron to get more looks. For Oregon State, it's not just making shots but I love how Talia played in the second half. She's got great size, and can really play inside and out. I just want her to be aggressive all the time. Similarly Taylor Jones is great, I wish she was a bit more aggressive. I really like the way she uses her length to contest shots on defense, and offensively she is solid. I think she just has to have a scorers mentality as well, for this team to remain a top 20 team.

Tough OT loss for Penn, out west, in the LMU Tournie
Another one of my favorite unheralded players is Kayla Padilla for Penn.

Indiana and Miami ended up being a nail-biter. Miami missed a 3-pointer in the final second that would have given them the upset, losing by 2

Would have been a terrible loss for Indiana, who looked incredibly flat. Miami got beat badly by Washington State and has struggled to put away the cupcakes on its schedule.

It was a tight low-scoring game, but Indiana pushed ahead 52-40 with over 5 minutes left. Kelsey Marshall almost singlehandedly won the game for Miami, scored all 11 of their points in the final run and just missed on the 3 attempt at the buzzer. Indiana scored one point on a free throw in the last 5 minutes.

The Flagship and Land Grant school of North Carolina . vs the Flagship and Land Grant School of Washington...... NC 2 WA 0

I wonder if that has ever happened before on the same day in WBB.... ? If it has, it can't be that often.

I'm not sure that either match up has ever happened before, and I bet just about any amount of money that both match ups couldn't have possibly ever happened on the same day before.

I was thinking.... it probably happens in the Pac 12 with Washington and Washington State playing Oregon and Oregon State respectively on the same day/night.

If I ever won the lottery (granted I've never played) I would set up a early season tournament double header... Flagship vs Flagship and Land Grant vs Land Grant. Texas and Texas A&M vs Virginia and VPI... and so on.

Oh, I was just thinking the North Carolina and Washington double header. Yeah, we get the NW cross state land grant vs. flagship thing going at the same time.

I'm in. Make it happen!

The AP Poll on Monday will be interesting. Expecting BYU, Georgia & Notre Dame to be ranked. UCLA, Florida St. & VA Tech should fall out. USF deserves to rise high.

BYU beats Florida State 61-54. Shaylee Gonzales goes for 24, including 10-11 FTs.

Florida State was bigger, faster, deeper, and far more talented. But their bloated football budget couldn't buy them the heart and grit that BYU showed. All the more impressive considering BYU was without their head coach.

Not to toot my own horn, but I had BYU ranked ahead of Florida State on my poll. (One of only two Boneyarders who had BYU in their top 25).
Cougars dominated ASU. CTT said she wished she recruited Gonzales harder. Even though Harding scored 25 against Lady Devils Gonzalez was the glue on that team. She was the Arizona Gatorade player of the year coming out her senior year and had 40 career double doubles in high school and seven triple-doubles. I was really impressed with her play.

Just curious -- does that mean she didn't try to recruit Gonzales? Or she just sort of half-heartedly did so because she underestimated how good she'd be?

Edit to add: Quite a day yesterday for BYU athletics:
  • Women's soccer team reached its first ever "College Cup" (final 4), with a dominant 4-1 win over South Carolina.
  • WBB won its 2nd consecutive game over an AP top 25 opponent — without their head coach on the sideline.
  • Its #13 ranked football team eked out a win over USC.
