It is also stunning on a criminal level what the school is willing to overlook. The attorney's statement tells the public that there is sufficient plausible deniability for the school to let him play. While they may not be able to publicly divulge information on this, they could have (and should have) privately asked for far more detail on what happened beyond the brief, carefully crafted statement.
This is without question a situation where the school's stance (from day one) should have been "we aren't letting you play again until we are convinced your involvement was so far removed from this that we can in clear conscience let you play".
