Here we go folks. Things starting to get interesting with intraconference play. Top 25 teams, BE teams (blue), and undefeated in conference (green). Nine top 25 matchups this week.

Conference vs overall standings in top 8 from Warren Nolan's NET. ACC still a bit of a mosh pit with 5 teams 3 or more places apart in conf vs overall records. The tourney bracket byes beginning to look really important for some of the top 25 teams.

Minor (nitpicking) typo comment: the UConn at SoCar game is on ABC/Dis+...

2nd place in the WCC Portland narrowly averts disaster. Pair of 2 point wins on the road against San Diego and Pepperdine, both really bad teams.

Beers out again for Oklahoma, and they are trying to give away a game at home against Auburn. Outscored 20-9 in Q4 w/ the clock winding down.

Ole Miss understands the whole "Hard work beats talent when talent does not work hard" phrase. Great win for them. Wow!
Kentucky is also somewhat a pretender. They have beaten a few good teams but still haven't faced the best in the conference. They'll have a gauntlet with their last 6 games: 4 of those last 6 are Texas, LSU, Tennessee, and South Carolina. Kentucky could easily go 2-4 in their remaining games.

Iowa is gonna beat Nebraska. They will both be 7-6 in Big 10, but going in opposite directions. 5 straight wins for Iowa, Nebraska has lost 4 of 5. Not coincidentally Lucy Olsen is playing her best ball of the season during this winning streak.

How many times do I have to tell people you can't leave Taylor McCabe alone on the 3 point line? It's just not worth cheating into the lane or doubling someone else, you're going to get burned almost every time. Does no one do scouting reports anymore?

81-66 final, Iowa was in control just about the whole way. Olsen started red hot, went quiet for a while, then got going again. Season high 32 to go along w/ 6 rebounds and 7 assists. Stuelke and O'Grady never really got going, but McCabe, Affolter and Heiden helped out.

Prince really struggled for Nebraska. Big game for Rimdal but not nearly enough help. Markowksi struggled too but she put on some window dressing at the end when it was too late.

They really could have beaten usc earlier this season as well. Would have been big for their resume but they let it slip away

Good win for Iowa. I didn’t expect them to win both the Minnesota and Nebraska games. That’s huge though because their schedule is hard to finish up. I think they have ucla, michigan, and Ohio state to finish up.

Clear line of delineation now in the ACC. Big difference between #9 Virginia Tech and 10th-place Syracuse.

BYU hung tough w/ TCU in the first half, then got blown out after the break. 79-47 final. LONG season in Provo. Balanced scoring for the Frogs, nobody really went off.

Seems like a few teams got written off at the beginning of the year and probably shouldn't have been. Now several months later they are having fine seasons, but still are cruising under the radar. I'm thinking particularly of NC State and Baylor. Bears are finishing off West Virginia and will remain in a first place tie in the Big 12 coming down the home stretch.

Why does the NET love WV so much?

This isn't a shot at WV, I don't have a strong opinion of them, and will openly admit to not having watched them play. I'm just trying to have a better understanding of how these rankings work.

When I look at their team sheet I see:

Quad 1 0-3
Quad 2 2-2
Quad 3 7-0
Quad 4 10-0

So they have 17 wins against essentially non-tournament type teams. They have quality wins over OK State and Iowa State...but that's kinda it. And while those are quality wins, they aren't exactly signature, elite level wins.

The 10 toughest games according to NET rankings :

#3 Texas (Neutral Court) L 78-73
#21 @Baylor L 75-65
#28 @ok State L 64-57

#28 OK State W 54-37
#38 Iowa State W 82-68
#59 @Arizona L 77-62
#62 @Coloardo L 65-60

#62 Colorado W 73-46
#76 Kansas W 76-43
#79 BYU W 66-53

I just don't see it. It DOES look like Morgantown is a very tough place to play, they blow teams out at home. SOS is 74th, non conference SOS is 189. What am I missing? Is it because they played a close game with Texas? The fact they have some lopsided home wins against Quad 3s and a couple of 2s?

To me that resume looks like a fringe top 25 team yet they are 11th in the NET? (Maybe the NET hasn't been updated to reflect last night's game, but still seems wild). Pretty much every listed behind them all the way down to Richmond at 30th has a better resume when you just look at wins and losses by quads. And I get that simply looking at quads isn't the end all be all - but can someone explain why the computers seem to like WV so much?

I can't. I don't like NET. I honestly don't think it's better than RPI. Oregon had a season like this maybe 4 or 5 years ago? Lost to every good team they played, yet the NET loved them and their score never dropped.

NET is supposed to be more of a power rating tool than a resume assessment. It's trying to determine which teams are the best (and will perform the best in the NCAA tournament). If you win by 1 it doesn't mean that much since the difference between winning by 1 and losing by 1 is treated basically as randomness. A team can get a bigger boost by beating an ok team by 30 versus beating a good team by 3.

I'm not necessarily saying it does this well. But it's clearly not a metric to determine who's worthy. It's a metric to determine who's the best.

Like you suggested WV has created large margins in many victories, which NET values a lot.

South Dakota St. could virtually wrap up the Summit tonight. Up 20 late in Q4 @ North Dakota St., the 2nd place team. If the result holds they'll be 3 games up with only 4 left.
