Was Boykin on the bench tonight?

I was thinking Walker too. I hope not. But by both the Courant and Jim Fuller she has academic issues that she is "struggling" with..
If she doesn't suit up and get a minute here or there soon---I wonder, I wonder, can't help it if I wonder (old song)???
Crockett had some issues, minor issues, but she made it to the end and played her best game as her last game, against Duke's Bales!!
I think her best game was the semi final against all the Texas big's where she got a ton of boards against bigger players-

Watching Butler...she is either regressing or never was ready. Watch how she claps on the bench...doesn't use her left hand. I wouldn't expect her anytime soon.
I was sitting 3 rows off the court right at the corner- the thumb never moved and the clapping on her wrist looked tentative! I just got home.

Why? Heather Buck was medically cleared to play her first year and she redshirted.

Apples and oranges. Heather never played a game that year so she didn't even have to apply for an extra year. Her illness was irrelevant.

Just out of curiosity, who said she was medically cleared? Maybe to walk upright and skip around, but she sure doesn't look medically ready to hold a pen, much less a basketball.

Jim Fuller on December 4th quoted Geno as saying the doctors had cleared her.

I'm beginning to get the little hairs on the back of my neck into an agitated state...

In the official UConn summery of the game ( AP)
It mentions that Saniya and Butler were in street clothes.
No mention at all of DJB

Ominous? Or out of sight, out of mind?

I don't think Butler has played a game either.

Yes but there is a HUGE difference. She would need to apply for a 6th year - something that is not only not automatic but is very rarely granted. Completely different than Buck's situation.

True. I don't think she wants to redshirt either after waiting a whole year and I think the team needs her. She will make a difference, more so than DJ.

If Boykin really is having academic issues, then it's exams week next week so she definitely wouldn't be there for this game. I hope as much as you all that she plays soon, but we need to remember that she's a freshman living hundreds of miles away from home, taking college classes, and trying to play for the most demanding coaching staff in WCBB. We all struggle at some point in life/college - mine was my sophomore year, for her perhaps it's her first semester. In any case, it's not our business other than what the newspapers have reported. Hopefully from next game through January she'll be able to get some playing time, as it will be semester break from classes. (Though I don't know if they typically take intersession classes or not...)

Yes, next week is the exam. week. Really wish the best for Boykin.

this thread is depressing...

seems that some fans are "worried" that UConn doesn't have enough to win it all with whom is available at this time... but refuse to directly say that

I heard that Butler was still having problems catching passes thrown to her in practice! Thus she can't play in a game!
And exams are next week so Boykin was left home with tutors to get her ready for those exams!

Can Butler apply for a medical red shirt? Would she want to? Her playing in games just seems to keep slipping deeper and deeper into the season, and I'm beginning to think that we won't see her on the court for at least another month.

I thought she was cleared to play by the medical staff. So it's a recurring problem?

Butler will be fine. The initial estimate said she would be out until the new year and that is when I think she will make her debut(January 6) against Tulsa. While she has been medically cleared by a Doctor that doesn't mean she is feeling 100% yet. After any surgery it takes time to get your confidence back.

So far UConn has played the #3, #10, #11, and #18 ranked teams and beat them all by double digits, two of them on the road. And that's without De'Janae or Natalie and with Saniya playing minimal time. I'm not seeing a reason for distress here.

The distress is the absence of a cherished kid with the most sketchy explanations...ok, home to attend to studies for a road trip, but this was a virtual home game.

Doing a little bit of research this is what I found ....

Every student athlete has a clock of 5 years, starting at first enrollment in college, in which to complete 4 years of competition.

Competition in one play in one intercollegiate competition in any one academic year constitutes one year of eligibility.

A "redshirt" is when a player does not compete for even that one play and therefore does not burn that eligibility year. But since you still only have five years to get in that four years of eligibility you only get one year "redshirt".

A medical hardship is technically not a redshirt. To qualify for a medical hardship these three conditions must be met: 1) injury is season ending, 2) occurs during the first half of season, and 3) athlete has not played in more 3o% of scheduled games.

A "red shirt" is elective.
A player must apply for a medical hardship at the end of the year.

Yes, all true. Only slight correction is that the player doesn't have to apply for a medical hardship waiver at the end of the year. It can be done at any point after the end of the year - even two or three years later. Just requires the certification of the doctor that the injury was season-ending along with medical evidence such as MRI's etc.

I don't need to know, and quite frankly don't care all that much (other than curiosity) because as long as we have Stewie, and Mo, and Tuck, we have a pretty decent shot at an 11th title. We have the triumvirate and no one else does!!!!
Since the 11th Championship will likely take more than 3 players the rest of us (more than you obviously) tend to care about the well being of the other players. Some of us care about the well being of all the players- Shocking I know!

Have any of the posters pining for Natalie and DJB and questioning doctors giving her clearance and yatah... yatah... to return ever heard of a "set back"? It happens in real life all the time especially with sport related injuries that require surgery.

I guess her last game was more memorial to me because in the opening minute Will scored on Bales and played a pretty good game to go along with BT's terrific game in Bridgeport that year. I don't remember much about the tX game.
