Villanova Post Game Thread

By far our best half of the Big East season. Typically a get right game is against a much weaker opponent but this felt like a get right game...

Our defense fell apart the last 4 games and it was great tonight. Ross is a huge difference maker on D, he needs to get consistent huge minutes from now on. We played physical and smart. No dumb shots from Solo. The bench which has been MIA overall for a long time was awesome tonight. Reibe played great and had the most impressive play of the season with his catch and finish. Jaylin with two timely threes. Malachi gave us good minutes.

Without all the unforced turnovers in the first half this would've been a beatdown from start to finish.

So happy with that performance.
And feeding the ball to Reed.

Sorry, I was traveling and have not watched the game on replay yet. Can someone please tell me how the "cargo ship" played more minutes than anyone when he is supposedly not 100%? I saw he was the leading scorer but did we really need all of his 30+ mins?

Thought the same thing. So why can’t we play to our potential every game? That’s what has me frustrated.
Exactly. If they played like this against Creighton they win by at least 10. That loss is a big giant pimple on the resume.

.-.
I hate the way we finished the game.... letting easy drives to the hoop, then even worse, making weak reach in fouls. And all the late turnovers against the press. St. John's will eat us alive if we can't figure that out.

Still, a nice win against a good team on the road. The first 15 minutes of the second half we looked like the way I want us to look.

As someone already pointed out, at least 3-4 of them were the result of uncalled fouls.
Silas often was past his defender and then would stop thus losing his advantage- I wish he would just veer into his defender for an easy foul. Malachi does the same thing a lot. They could get a lot of foul calls if they wanted

Only complaints about this game is the looseness with the ball by Silas. Can’t be that loose with the ball against good teams. But also can we have someone in the backcourt to to an outlet for Silas so he doesn’t have to struggle bringing the ball up?

Also liked how tonight they made an effort to get the ball to the basket and they were coming off curls in the mid range where they had the option to pull up there or keep going. Also the limited number of 3s taken was a good thing. I think that this team falls in love with the 3pt shot and it hurts them. Team hit their free throws which was most definitely a welcome sight as well.
Every point was spot on.

Great all around game from all. Bench with 22 points was big and key in our 2nd half run. Glad Stewart and Smith played well. Still Karaban with 34 minutes is too much. I do like when Mullins snd Ball aren't on the court together as neither play great d without fouling. Need Stewie and Ross to keep playing smart on d for that to continue. Would like to see more of Smith with Demary as the opposition is really pressuring him and he has no outlet besides Our centers. Another ball handler would help with that. Smith has been playing better last few games so he would help Demary alot.

Yes seriously!! The topic was the last 5 minutes. Refs always suck, the question is do they suck enough to influence the outcome?
Yeah I didnt see anything in last 5 minutes where they sucked. You said it, refs always suck, so in your mind they are always going to suck.

Would like Danny to play Malachi with Silas at the 2. Maybe 10 minutes of that would help, minutes can come from Solo and Alex. Would help keep Silas fresh and Alex too, Silas was dragging tonight after dealing with the pressure all night. Will be worse on Wed and TOs still an issue for us. Was at the game tonight and really enjoyed it. D was fantastic but Nova doesn’t match up well with us. We did an amazing job at the pick and roll D!!

Hurley trusted the bench a lot more tonight and they played with more confidence and more freedom.

Lets thank @Chief00 that Hurley listened to his advice and we went with a double big lineup which propelled us to that win..

But seriously, we went 9 deep and everyone contributed. We played with more aggression and were locked in defensively
Reibe played 17 minutes but the double big was not needed because Karaban played 34 productive minutes as he rebounded from injury. We will see if this leg improvement continues or regresses again. Both Ross and Smith score 4 points. Stewart hitting 2 threes helped.

Yep, i totally agree and that is what I said a few posts above yours. It seems like Smith has adjusted to our offensive sets and has played good the last few games. We can't afford Demary being tired out as no one is helping him with the playmaking and starting sets.

I think Hurley knows he has to play his bench and let them play through their mistakes. They become hesitant if they have no idea if they will be hooked after one or two mistakes. I'm glad Hurley mentioned that in post game interview referring to Stewie. But it applies to all our bench players.

Honestly he could of played 26 or so minutes and we still would of won as our bench was great including both Stewart and Ross.

I wouldn't read too much into the last 5 minutes. We played a great game and they hit some shots they were missing earlier from outside.

This is playing out just like I predicted in the thread on "having an edge". They have moved from the phase of consistently underperforming to being inconsistent. They were good @Creighton, really good at home vs. Xavier, bad @SJU, ok @ Butler, bad at home vs. Georgetown, very bad at home vs. Creighton, good @ nova. They will now drift toward being consistently good with, maybe, an isolated set back.

Great game for the bench. All 4 contributed. Stewart hits 2 threes. Ross had some blocks and went 4-5 from the line. Reibe made his FT's too. He had Reed are both good at finishing around the rim. I've been really down on Smith all year and the offense never looks good when he is running it but he made several positive plays including 2 layups which is huge. The fact that our backup PG can't drive to the basket is one reason the offense looks so stagnant when he runs it. But if Smith can keep them honest the a legitimate drive game, that will open up passing lanes for him.
Smith has actually played decent the last few games but finally made some layups this game. Also, Smith was playing great in our OOC slate so not sure what you mean all year?
