With two friendlies coming up this week, I figured I would start a thread for the Men's National Team. I see no reason why we can not use this thread to discuss this team, and maybe start a European thread to discuss Euro futbol. I also see no reason why this thread can not be used a year from now, no need for new threads all the time, just use this one for all US Men's Soccer discussions from here on out.

Here is the roster for the two game starting a week from now.

GOALKEEPERS (2): Bill Hamid (D.C.United), Tim Howard (Everton)
DEFENDERS (9): Carlos Bocanegra (Rangers), Edgar Castillo (Club America), Timmy Chandler (FC Nürnberg), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover), Clarence Goodson (Brondby), Zach Loyd (FC Dallas), Michael Orozco Fiscal (San Luis), Heath Pearce (Chivas USA), Tim Ream (New York Red Bulls)
MIDFIELDERS (9): Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Clint Dempsey (Fulham), Maurice Edu (Rangers), Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim), Sacha Kljestan (Anderlecht), Jeff Larentowicz (Colorado Rapids), Robbie Rogers (Columbus Crew), Brek Shea (FC Dallas), Jose Torres (Pachuca)
FORWARDS (4): Juan Agudelo (New York Red Bulls), Jozy Altidore (AZ Alkmaar), Teal Bunbury (Sporting Kansas City), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy)

No Freddy Adu? Why would that be?
I hope Klinsmann starts to use the youth on the team - never too early to start WC qualifying prep. I believe that several of the remaining "old guard" will be past prime by the next World Cup.

I need to get a handle on all of the Americans playing here in Germany. FC Kaiserslautern's stadium is minutes from me.

Spector? Really? I know that Blackburn reneged on George John but I'd much rather see him called up than Spector. And Goodson again...

Dempsey isn't coming over but will be available for the Belgium friendly from what I heard.

True on Dempsey. Also, Fabian Johnson will not be playing because he is still listed on Germany's side due to playing for their youth teams. Spector does not bother me as much as Bornstein, West Ham showed last year if you know how to use him, he can give you production, so lets let the coach figure it out. These matches are about figuring out what he has and how to use those pieces. I do not know why some like Larentowicz are there, but JK knows more than I do, by a lot.

.-.
Looks like there will be an USMNT game at The Rent around Oct. 12. See the BB board.

Probably let him settle in with his new team.

game is at 11 tonight on espn2. I am watching the Canada/St. Lucia game now and am so happy we do not have to deal with this level of qualification.

And tonights starting lineup isa 4-3-3
Howard; Chandler, Orozco Fiscal, Bocanegra (c), Castillo; Donovan, Edu, Torres; Rogers, Altidore, Shea

US loses 1-0. What we learned tonight.....

Good first half until stoppage. a lot more passing and possession than we are used too. Our big problems are thought to be up front and the back line, so that is what i paid most attention too.

the mexican defenders are not going to get it done. Castillo in particular was horrible. best of the back line was Chandler, at least he was aggressive getting forward and made some good distribution from the back.

I do not think Rogers is not a national team level player, he puts the ball so far in front of him, such horrible touch, and has no control. Shea looked tired, he has played so much of late it is not surprising. The center forwards were okay. Jozy held well and made some real nice passes that lead to nothing. When Agudelo came in he brought a lot of energy and aggression, but he just does not have the finishing touch.

Just a friendly. For Belgium on Tuesday you will see Dempsey on the wing and likely some different defenders.

I agree with a lot of what you said. Rogers sticks out because he's just not at this level: he's just a body out there. Klinsmann needs to find someone else, hopefully Holden.

.-.
All I know is I've seen enough of Castillo for the rest of my life. He's terrible and he's a tiny freaking dude who can and does easily get muscled out of position. Like the announcers mentioned last night I was really hoping to see Agudelo come in and play alongside Jozy so we could get a look at 2 strikers. Especially when it became obvious CR was looking to turtle and pack 9 in the back and hope for a counter.

Brek also needs to start spreading the field by making his moves along the sidelines. He constantly overcrowded the middle and cut into other's spacing, he had some nice touches but he needed to be a little more selfish at times last night as well.

Looks like this is the starting lineup for today's game:
Howard; Cherundolo, Goodson, Bocanegra (capt.), Chandler; Edu, Torres, Dempsey; Rogers, Altidore, Shea

I have no clue why Klinsmann is sticking with Rogers. I'm not surprised, however, that Castillo is not in the starting XI. Who plays right back, Cherundolo or Chandler?

Dolo on the right, putting him on the left does not make sense. I am wondering how the TV is going to work with the tin top racing looking like they are having some weather issues to deal with.

Things we learned during the first half that leaves us with a 0-0 tie.
-Belgium is the better side
-Tim Howard is really good, really good
-Rogers is not a regular NT quality player.
-Chandler may not be a left back. Does not look quite as comfortable on the runs.

.-.
I guessed there wouldn't be some sort of teen wolf moment for Rogers.

Can I assume that Chandler is still an upgrade over any of the other recent left backs?

He has been fine defensively, just real bad crosses when he goes up

have direct tv and its raining and espn2 is not coming in ugh! let me kno if someone scores plz.

1-0 belgium. it is the 82nd minutes and the US is actually looking slightly better this half. Belgium is just the better squad though

Really, better squad? that's too bad. Fifa has them ranked 37. My ESPN2 still not coming in hope we squeeze in a goal.

USA got much better as the 2nd half went on. I hope Aguedelo gets more of a run in the next few matches, but I can understand playing other guys, too. You know Aguedelo's a key part of the future. You have to figure out what else you've got.

Debatable but probably. Maybe given some time. For now it looks like Chandler and Lichaj are the future with one of them playing LB out of position and necessity.

Although we are not scoring, we do seem to "look better" under Klinsmann.

I got a chance to watch the game, and I actually don't think the US looks better at all. In fact, they look the same as they've looked since the World cup. I might say they look better in the midfield, but that is only because Torres (along with Freddie Adu and often times Donovan) can possess the ball, make quick decisions, and generally keep defenses guessing.

I like what I see in Chandler (and yes, his crosses were quite bad), but overall the defense looks a little slow

no comment on Rogers . . .

I'm continually frustrated by Altidore- I know he's big and strong, but he doesn't have great touch, is not a good passer, and loses the ball almost every time he's fed when he comes back to receive it.

Brek Shea is a live body and looks dangerous, so I like what he brings to the team.

Not sure what to do going forward and who will fit where. I'm keenly looking forward to Holden coming back, but would love to see Davies and Adu get some pt.

I also think it's important to bring some young guys in on defense, since Bocanegra and Cherundolo will both be 35 in Brazil. I guess it's not unheard of to have players that age, but they're only going to get slower.

Am I missing all the posts from those who desperately wanted Bradley out and Klinsman in apologizing to the rest of us for causing the MNT to take eight steps backwards. This genuis needed two full games to determine Castillo couldn't play on this level? He's still determining it for Rodgers? He still thinks we are going to have a better chance of European teams trying to play more of their game and less of what brought us success? And he really thinks we have four midfielders who have been playing better than Michael Bradley?

I wish I was like many of you, and I could be so wrong without seeing the need to step back into the forum and question my earlier position.

Crickets.

And that's what looks good to me. I don't ever remember being able to possess the ball (especially against a decent European side). We used to just use out athleticism to counter. Now we are actually playing. Of course we have to actually do something with the possession, but hopefully that will come.

Yes, Holden and Adu I would like to see in this system. Don't know if Davies is ever gonna make it all the way back, unfortunately.

Only problem is who? Klinsmann has used Chandler at RB and I can see him as Dolo's replacement, if he doesn't have to switch over to LB out of necessity. Ream really hasn't impressed. Maybe Gonzalez or give Johns a shot?

Nope and no reason to. Best thing that's happened to USMNT in the past year or so (minus Donovan's goal - for the publicity).

Maybe Agbossoumonde, and yes, Gonzalez. Or what about having Edu play in the back, as either the center back or left back.

Agbossoumonde? HA! Lets see him actually play somewhere first. He is a long way from being part of the NT conversation. We have not even had a game with the new coach and our two best forward players yet, this is far from a debacle. Knowing who is not a part of the team is as useful as finding out who is. The most important factors in the quality of this team over the next year is Holden returning to full health, seeing what Bradley ends up doing in Italy, having Jozy continue to get time and put balls in the back plus id who could play best off of him, and identifying a couple people who should be playing on the back line.

If JK is adamant about using a defensive #6, can Bradley play that? Can he be trusted to do what he wants from that position? for the front six, 4 of them are Dempsey, Donovan, Holden, and Altidore. There are 2 spots, and if Bradley wants one, that is the easiest one because Jones is too old and angry and Edu just is not good enough. JK seems to like rat nest head in that spot but I have a hard time believing that he will be there long. Shea is looking good but he is still young and does not seem to know what to do in the 18, but his aggressiveness has been quite impressive.

This is a long process, and the November friendlies will be the first time I will actually care about results from this team (just hope we play descent teams, not world class teams like germany)

Pro sports board.....not trying to be a dikc but only way were gona build up this husky sports board is to follow thru with uconn stuff and not usa soccer and yanks games.

The problem is this thread was created before this board changed its name, so it will stick around and I doubt it will harm peoples ability to discuss uconn stuff. for every game there was always a thread on the main hoops or football board and it didnt harm those.

ok, i'll make it uconn related, Stuart Holden's brother played soccer at UConn, so there.

Yea, I'm going with Johns before Agboss. I don't see Edu playing a LB/RB, maybe CB, but hopefully we wouldn't need to.

What in the world does your sexual orientation have to do with this thread? And why is it our business?

2 USMNT matches coming up next week. The first is on Fox Soccer and the second is where ESPN decides to put it at the last second, but for now it is on the deuce.

Oct. 8, 2011 vs. Honduras
6 p.m. ET

Oct. 11, 2011 vs. Ecuador 7 p.m. ET

expect more experimentation in these games before a first team really getting down to business during the tba friendlies in November.

Isn't that the truth, makes it almost impossible to DVR. :(

.-.
Horrible news for the national team. Stu Holden is out for another 6 months after playing in only 1 carling cup match since his return from injury. Having another knee surgery, and who knows how he will be when he gets healthy again. I think Bolton must be using the same doctors as the NY Mets

That really blows. The report yesterday said 6 weeks . . . .

Here is the roster for the friendlies this coming week

GOALKEEPERS (3): Bill Hamid (D.C.United), Tim Howard (Everton), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)
DEFENDERS (7): Carlos Bocanegra (Rangers), Timmy Chandler (Nürnberg), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96), Clarence Goodson (Brondby), Oguchi Onyewu (Sporting Lisbon), Michael Orozco Fiscal (San Luis), Tim Ream (New York Red Bulls), Jonathan Spector (Birmingham City)
MIDFIELDERS (7): Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Michael Bradley (Chievo Verona), Clint Dempsey (Fulham), Maurice Edu (Rangers), Jeff Larentowicz (Colorado Rapids), Brek Shea (FC Dallas), Danny Williams (Hoffenheim)
FORWARDS (5): Juan Agudelo (New York Red Bulls), Jozy Altidore (AZ Alkmaar), DaMarcus Beasley (Puebla), Teal Bunbury (Sporting Kansas City), Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy)

Most interesting for me is to see what Beasley is able to bring. He has had a bit of a rejuvenation down in Mexico, so it will be interesting if he could be the one who can play well off of Jozy (who looks inept scoring for us, but is putting them in the back of the net left and right for his club).
