From this Uconn fan, I can think of no rational reason to select TN over Uconn in a ore-season poll.

In the context we're discussing here, i.e. the talent of a player, trying is not relevant. Did you ever hear a player analysis list trying to do something as a positive? It's the doing that counts.
 
Even though I think not voting UConn #1 pre-season is ridiculous, I think pre-season polls are more ridiculous. Every year, in both hoops and football, the pre-season rankings lay out a false road map that usually takes, in hoops, at least 10 if not more games to shake out. Teams perform better or worse than expected. I'd rather see polls start at game 10 for hoops and 4 for football. At least hoops has the virtue of a real championship tournament where rankings at best earn a few wins.

Well the BCS standings, the thing that really counts for football does not come into play until well into the season.

And I don't see anything wrong with the preseason polls. It's just where people think the teams are. Things change as the season goes along. Doesn't mean the #1 team is going to win the NC, they are just considered #1 at this time (this week, etc.).

The problem, if problem is the right word, is that it takes a long time for the polls to reflect actual performance. Unlike political polls which give a fix on attitudes and only one event to show actual performance,, sports give immediate , on going results. So with 0 games played, the only basis for a poll is pure guess work even if there is some historical info, like the previous year or departed or new players, used to make the guess. Obviously sports polls give fans something to talk about and coaches and writers a chance to say something about teams they've never actually seen. But there are worse things in the world to fret about. We don't need polls to tell us, barring injury, that this UConn team should be the toughest out in the country.

But it's much more impressive to beat the 2nd ranked Duke, than just plain ole Duke. :cool:

Far be it from me to stop anyone from giving Duke a finger (although I have my own special candidate for that honor ).

Btw, meant to say on the BCS system, while i agree that it uses actual results, we all know that it still really doesn't compare apples to apples. It certainly does a reasonable job of identifying the top teams, but so can you and I. There is no way that system can take, say 4 unbeaten teams from 4 top conferences and know which team is #1 and #2. Until a real playoff system is used, all we know is that only 2 of the top 4 or 8 teams get to claim a championship as determined by a computer system.

I agree. All other sports have a playoff system. All other divisions do.

However, if I had my way, I'd dump the BCS, go back to polls and a mythical champion and have the old Bowl structure, all on New Years Day. But that's just me being nostalgic.

Preseason polls are merely cheerful diversions that allow fans to heap abuse on a few idiot anonymous voters who do not share our opinions.

The final season polls are what matters, and last year Baylor swept all 40 votes in the AP poll and also got one of the 31 votes in the Coaches poll that was taken after the NC game thanks to a presumably substance abusing Charlotte Smith of Elon. So that clearly makes Baylor the top team for last year by a 41-30 score. Possibly a good guess as to who the UTenn vote came from is naturally Ms. Smith, since if she can vote for the top team to be a Sweet 16 exit victim she would have no problem putting UTenn or even Providence ahead of UConn.

Does make you wonder if anyone checks the credentials of the voters at the Coaches poll. Ms. Smith, can you verify that your cranium is in place?
