Urban Meyer shares secrets on winning

That was Jack Welsh's philosophy as well.
I don't know Jack Welsh, George Welsh the old UVA coach?

That philosphy is troublesome, though probably more prevalent across the board than I am aware off. You spend time recruiting and convicing the kid and his parents that you will care for and develop the kid, but if he doesn't develop as coach wants, hit the road kid there is another 4 star kid in mind and you're just in the way tying up a scholarship.

Coaches get paid to win and he WINS. Just doesn't sound like the type that a parent would want to entrust their kid to.

Nobody can criticize Urban Meyer for recruiting Hernandez. Continuing to play Hernandez while ignoring his cataclysmic demise is exactly why "He's an all-around great coach." with a jaw dropping bowl record ....

I love the revisionist history. No one was saying this back then. No one even knew of problems back then. He had a few failed drug tests. That was it. There was no other incident that stuck to him people could point to.

According to published reports after the fact, the thing was, they didn't have proof of Hernandez doing anything wrong. One report called him a "con man." A guy that you had an inkling was bad news, but was so well spoken, he was hard to pin for anything. Yet you expect a coach to kick off a player that has not been proven to do any of these things? He wasn't in trouble with the law. He was a hard worker. What, exactly, was being ignored?

Like I said, it's sour grapes.

I think you're completely missing the human element to all this, and I suspect it's because you've never managed people. A lot of coaches, Urban chief among them, are not just coaches but they try to mold these guys into upstanding young men. You look at it and accuse Urban of simply ignoring a cataclysmic demise for sake of winning football games (to which you had no proof anyone thought that was going to happen at the time). Urban and other coaches look at it like a guy who has some character flaws, but if surrounded by the right people, can be shaped into productive members of society. Shame on any coach for wanting to be a good role model, huh?

Talk to a Gator fan to find out what really happened down there. He had lost control of the program..had recruited questionable players...players he got were entitled and hard to coach. He saw the hand writing on the wall and left. Muschamp had to clean house and start over. Gator fans do not believe his comments about health concerns. All of his health issues went away when the OSU job was open.

The guy might have learned from his Florida experience and changed his values and approach. But...he wasn't a quality guy in Florida and he didn't recruit quality kids or hold them accountable.

Hell of a coach though.

Oh yeah, Gator fans are real objective about that. They're the ones still blaming their problems on Urban 5 years later. Everything Will Muschamp did wrong was because of Urban.

That's like asking the jilted ex-lover for the truth about his or her spouse. Sure, you're going to get a truthful answer about that.

Meyer shares the steely eyed, no-nonsense demeanor of Parcells, Belichick, Saban, Lombardi. They would all walk over their grandmother for a win. Of the group, Meyer probably invested in more criminal thugs than the others. But would we want him as our coach?
Is that a serious question? Hell yeah.

If Meyer wanted to coach here we'd treat Diaco like Mr. McDowell treated Darryl Jenks

LOL at the absurdity of this post.

Is Urban your brother or something?

.-.
Show me a coach that has never tolerated a single arrest or legal issue, or recruited a single questionable character, and I'll show you the first truly righteous coach to ever have reached this level.

Jack was the legendary CEO of GE.

Again, it wasn't a single arrest (or even a handful). It was DOZENS. Many of which were lightly punished at best. You pointed out the facts that Hernandez had never really been punished for anything, which is EXACTLY the point we are making. No one really ever got punished for anything unless they were at the bottom of the depth chart. Then Urban would reign hellfire.

Carlos Dunlap asleep in his car at a red light with an open bottle of Crown Royal? 1 game suspension, back for the Sugar bowl.

Starter like Janoris Jenkins? Well, I'll let Janoris tell it:

"It’s a reality that Rams cornerback Janoris Jenkins, who was tolerated by Meyer but kicked out of school by his successor, Will Muschamp, astutely recognized in 2011.

“If Coach Meyer were still coaching, I’d still be playing for the Gators,” Jenkins said at the time. “Coach Meyer knows what it takes to win.”

I can go on if you'd like.

Tony Joiner - Arrested Tuesday night before the LSU game for breaking into a tow lot and steaing his car back from behind a locked fence. Took his captaincy away, no suspension.

Ronny Wilson - Shot off an AK-type weapon in a parking lot to intimidate people. 1 year suspension, allowed back next spring before he is arrested again and booted.

Did Urban steal your lunch money in school or something?

If he could've, he probably would've. Just pointing out what those with a pulse already know. Your shilling for Meyer makes the Paterno sycophants blush.

And yet, Urban is gone, and the past five years Florida has still had 24 more arrests. You think it's just Urban with arrest problems? This is a societal issue.

Check this list out, it's the past five seasons and just the ones that were found:

Got news for you, there's no such thing as a righteous coach in college football. Singling Urban Meyer out is just a case of a successful coach who's on-field resume can't be questioned, so people try to find something else to criticize him about. Every single coach takes chances on kids with questionable character. Every single coach gives kids second and third chances.

What Urban had at Florida, while rocky at times, was still an element you find at every single major program. The only reason you're singling him out is because he's the winningest active coach and has three titles.

"What those with a pulse already know" Oh, right, those bitter ex-girlfriends at Florida that think Urban is the devil!

LOL dude, you sound realllly bitter. Jealous much?

OK buddy. Have a good day.

No one can question his coaching, he's the best coach in the country (right there with Nick Saban) and lets leave it at that. I won't read one word in that book , he is trying to hard to put up a good boy image. Coaches like Belichchick, Calhoun have a slimy image but don't care what people think of them it seems like Urban Meyer does. Having said that hell yeah I would want a coach like that coaching Uconn would I want a team full of criminals no but would I take 10 plus wins a season hell yeah. Ill take a machavelian coach who wins over a nice guy who sucks any day.

I don't buy his reasons of leaving Florida for health reasons, and spending more time with family. He spent that year off from coaching as an ESPN college game day analyst going on the road every week. He used Tebow as a shield to hide the off the field issues in Gainsville, he stayed that one year after Tebow left so it wouldn't look suspicious.

Arrest, you mean as in shooting and murder? C'mon man get with the program he was a pc of crap and doubt many of those stripes have actually lost just maybe watered down.

And sadly, 24 arrests over 5 years is down 22% from his 5 years stretch ('05-'10). Many schools have issues, but he is as lax anyone I've ever seen when they happen. I don't give a rat's ass about his winning either.

If you want an example of a shady coach that hasn't won, I'll put Art Briles up there.

.-.
This is all revisionist history at its best. The guy is as snakey as any snake coach.

Sorry Kyle...you do seem a little protective of UM.

Here is where I have a problem with the 10%...these kids have a life other than football. You know..school...friends...family. Telling them to leave a school is a big deal. A football career isn't the

Don't forget a lot of those players getting arrested were recruited by UM.

So there wasn't a police report in April of 2007??? Gainsville Police didn't assign an investigator that recommended felony battery??? Hernandez didn't retain the services of an attorney??? Tim Tebow didn't request that he not be named as a witness in the police report??? The bar employee was not contacted by UF coaches and UF legal staff???

... Never Managed people is all you got???

Some of you guys would make excellent subjects for behavior for sports fans on message boards.

It's really funny to see people have to stretch to find faults with successful people of other teams. Yeah Meyer isn't without faults. Who among you wouldn't take chances on some kids to win games? None of you, that's the answer.

A lot of those arrests by Gainesville P.D. were pretty pathetic if you go back and look through the reports. The ones that weren't? Well most of those guys were adequately punished by Meyer. But I'm sure you'll impose your own moral codes and say that there should be a zero tolerance policy and they should be kicked off, even though you know as well as I do if you were the coach, you'd act a lot differently when you have talented players who you have come to know personally.

It's funny though. People really try so hard to criticize every coach. It's the nature of the beast.

Stretch??? lol, I can't even argue with you anymore if you don't want to accept facts.

Stretch??? lol, I can't even argue with you anymore if you don't want to accept facts.

When you have to project other peoples' behavior as a reason to criticize Urban himself, yeah you're stretching big time. You want to keep a self-righteous, holier-than-thou stance about what you perceive to be the "correct" way to run a program and how many arrests are acceptable; how many questionable characters you can recruit, and if a successful coach doesn't mean your arbitrary limit, therefore it's a character flaw.

You're definitely stretching, especially when I know most people are hypocrites and would be doing the same thing if they were paid millions of dollars to win at a major program. Like I said, there's not a single major college coach that isn't taking at-risk kids in their program. The difference is the ones that punish kids for mess ups and actually do attempt to care outside of football. But hey, you'll call that a "character flaw" because again, it doesn't meet your arbitrary code for coaches you hate.

You mean like the Ohio State fan feverously defending Urban Meyer on the message board of a team that isn't in their conference and doesn't exist within the same universe from a football perspective?

When everyone's point is the guy's book is a joke?
