UPDATE: XL upgrades back on track

Cellular data does not work at either Gampel and XL
I'm a xl season ticket holder and also attend random gampel games and get cellular data. Are you with a secondary company like Cricket or Mint? Those service providers do not get preferred usage on cell towers.

I never get data at either with Verizon and an iPhone 14 Pro.

After the state invests another $125 million in it the XL center will go from a "tired old arena" to a "newly renovated tired old arena."
As they say, lipstick on a pig. Expensive lipstick, but lipstick nonetheless.

It really needs to be leveled and started from scratch. It is ugly and outdated, just an abomination on the outside. Some architecture is worth saving but this building is not one of them.

That said, look what they did with the Perelli Building in New Haven. It's a much more unique building despite the brutalist design.

So for the average fan, no upgrade whatsoever to the game day experience, unless I missed something. But yeah, obviously you need a roof.
This plan is know as the “Lower Bowl Plan” as it focuses on the lower bowl and infrastructure. It’s essentially enabling the XL to modernize and draw new acts while becoming profitable.

For the average fan in the upper bowl (like myself) I believe we get enhanced concessions, new digital signs throughout the arena, better WiFi, more shows, and a general refresh (paint etc).

It’s not a rebuild but should keep the old girl going and profitable.

Are they planning on keeping the Civic Center/XL around forever? I don't understand this constant push to keep dumping money into it. It's a 50 year old building, that's been old and tired for close to 25 years.

Future of XL Center discussed during meeting

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) - A meeting over the future of the XL Center in Hartford wrapped up early Tuesday afternoon.

Members of the Capitol Region Developing Authority voted to approve an agreement with OVG.

Channel 3 was told that it was a 20-year agreement.

The state in exchange would spend about $145 million in renovations. OVG would kick in about $20 million.

The plan would be to have OVG take over and run the XL Center.

Officials have been discussing for years about how repairs to the venue were badly needed.

The plan would include new luxury seating and upgraded locker rooms for the University of Connecticut.

UConn’s back-to-back men’s NCAA Tournament basketball championships had a lot to do with the decision, officials said.

The state Bonding Commission still needs to approve some of the money.

A new name for the venue is also on the table. OVG would have the right.

The renovations would start in July 2026.

They’ve updated their story because a lot of that isn’t right. Renovations will start next month with completion in early 2026.

Revised:

Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam says that this is a win as well as a chance to cash in on UConn’s superpower status.

“We have been talking a lot to uconn and growing that link between the city of hartford and uconn and bringing that basketball capitol of the world here and building on that,” he said.

The renovations could start this August, and it would take about two years to complete. The XL Center would be open for the duration of the project.

Nobody wants to spend the money to build a new one. The economics of building a new arena in a city like Hartford, without a major professional team as the anchor tenant, just doesn't work. Unless a government entity wants to subsidize the construction of a new arena. And we all know that's not happening in Connecticut.

How will lower bowl Season ticket holders in "forever seats" be accommodated when they lose their seats?
That may not be affected be affected as Ticketmaster now has the contract for all events except UConn sports. But you did a nice job of looking for the downside a positive development.

So keep dumping money into it forever? These buildings have a shelf life. At some point they'll need a new arena and construction costs are only going up and it's a lot of money to be dumping into a decaying building.

The money or political will is not there for a new arena. I know this is a message board, but let's inject some reality into this thread.

Tell this to the Red Sox owners. Their building is twice as old and they keep pumping money into it. What about the baseball stadium near you?

I'm going to guess that Hartford will not get a new arena during our lifetime.

If they're going to build a new arena, you tell me realistically who is going to fund it.

Are you really comparing the XL Center to Fenway and Wrigley? Why not compare it to MSG too while you're at it?
