Oldude, you’re 100% correct. LSU coach has always played a cupcake schedule so she can build up her personal win resume. The poll voters seem to always rank her team based on the number of wins and not the quality of her opponents. First game against a good team, at home, and they lose.

4 undefeated teams down on the first day of the year: LSU, GA, 'Bama, & MD. Plus #6 Michigan falls to #11 Kentucky.

Pray for UConn's injured player to recover quickly to FULL Husky strength, and all to remain healthy.

Coaching and development to optimum teamwork will do the rest.

That isn't why, and unfair IMHO. Believe me - I'm no Mulkey fan but...

Kim Mulkey defends LSU's traditionally lighter nonconference schedules by stating she knows her team best, uses early games for evaluation, and focuses on preparing for tough SEC play and the NCAA Tournament, emphasizing that her proven success with this strategy silences critics who question the "soft" scheduling. She rejects outside opinions from TV or the NCAA Committee, prioritizing the internal development of her team through dominant wins to build confidence.

I also recall reading that she likes her players to take some time off in the summer instead of playing hoops 365, but I can't find that anywhere so I'm not sure if it's one of her reasons.

Also Kentucky is no slouch and losing on a last second 3 point bomb isn't exactly a disaster. I do believe LSU will probably lose 4-5 other games in the SEC, but they are a top 20 team for sure.

Kentucky outrebounded LSU 45 to 29! That is a recipe for disaster.

No surprise here. Kenny Brooks can coach, and his Kentucky tenure is only going to get better. They'll start to get top prospects, and expect the Wildcats to be consistently a Top Ten team in years to come.

Just posted about that in the Vandy thread on the general woman's board. You have to think LSU will be motivated coming off the loss. It's a nice test for both teams.

those are rationalizations.

the important point, it seems to me, is that mulkey is disrespecting the SPORT and FANS by INTENTIONALLY playing as many non-competitive teams as possible. i am amazed the media, coaches and the public let her skate on this conduct.

plus, her players -- many of them topnotch -- don't get the chance to prove their talents. a team (and players) should not be judged on potential, but performance. if I was an LSU supporter, i would be disgusted by mulkey's tactics.
 
One thing I find interesting about LSU is that neither of Kim’s hired guns had much of an impact in last nights game. Koval played only 17 minutes, scored 1 basket and had 2 rebounds. Fulwiley, who supposedly left SC for greener pastures at LSU, played about 16 minutes, was 1/6 from the floor and watched the end of the game from the bench.

ASU @ BYU (53%)

Vandy v LSU (75%)

If you need to kick a few puppies to develop confidence, then maybe it wouldn't hurt to find a new source of inspiration.

It is hard to argue that Mulkey has not been successful with her approach, for her teams and herself. Yet, the piece that has always been missing is a sensitivity as to how Baylor and now LSU could make more of a contribution to the growth of the game. The contrast between Geno and Kim could not be more stark. Maybe the women’s game doesn’t need this consideration anymore? I think it still does and hope Dawn, Vic, etc. follow the Geno model.

It looks like UConn-Texas final to me. SC and UCLA can give us or Texas a game, so it will be interesting once the brackets come out.

Dawn has never scheduled easy and has frequently played a schedule as tough, or tougher, than Geno.

To me, skim is cheating her own fanbase by not scheduling better opponents in the conference preseason

I like how you looked at Mulkey's ways from the perspective of the fans, the sport itself and the players. IMO we all need to do that. Aren't we all interested in an improved WCBB product on the court? Watching her play some Louisiana Sisters of the Poor is a bastardization of the sport.
I've posted this before, consider being a player in 2025-26. I personally don't like it when the focus is solely to get ready for March. IMO that's not natural. I'm HS class of 76, so I grew up in ACC and Big East country in which regular season games and conference championships were paramount. Then came the tournament.
Is it Emerson, "the journey is the destination".
Powers that be: change the doggone rules!

She also committed 3 fouls in those 16 minutes. Same M.O. that she had against UConn both games last season.
