After the excitement and difficulty in facing the teams UConn played over the first two weekends of the season, the schedule for the rest of February and March more or less settles into a more normal routine that UConn baseball has gotten used to over the years. Generally the opponents are solid mid level teams that lack the stature of Michigan and Vandy. The next several weeks before AAC conference play begins in earnest in April (with the exception of the Cincinnati series in March) should hopefully allow various unproven players to show what they can do and get settled into their roles on the team. In particular I'm thinking of Joe Simeone and Colby Dunlop who need to get into the routine of providing consistently solid starts during this part of the season.

New Orleans swept Arkansas State last weekend. They are a step below the likes of SHSU and SELA (who we have played in recent years) but taking 2 out of 3 will be a fine result. A sweep likely gets us ranked unless nearly everyone in front of us holds serve.

Still no David Langer, but I was wondering if and when the freshman Todd Petersen might get some playing time. Definitely like seeing him get a chance. Also, Erik Stock gets a start at D.H.

Bushling hit well in the Michigan series, so his bat is still percolating. Bushling advances to 2B on a passed ball, but is stranded there as the next three batters go down in the top of the first. Hopefully Joe Simeone will be able to find the strike zone, his control was totally lacking against Michigan.

Bottom 2nd, Simeone gives up a no out solo homer. 1-0 New Orleans.

Gozzo throws out a base stealer for the third out after a hit by pitch. 1-0 UNO, with UConn coming to bat in the top of the 3rd. Simeone at 35 pitches.

Winkel with a terrific at bat where he forced about 10 pitches and wound up with a single. 1st and 2nd, 1 out. Middle of the order up.

We don't score - UNO's defense is playing ridiculously well. I cannot imagine they will be this good with the glove all series.

1-0 UNO. Just keep this close and put up a crooked number.

UConn is getting some baserunners, so that is a positive.

Bottom 3rd, Simeone with a leadoff four pitch walk. I'm inclined to say uh-oh.

Gozzo throws out another base stealer for the first out of the bottom of the 3rd to erase the runner.

Chris Jones reporting that Wang and Mayock are with the team and available to pitch this weekend.

Bottom 3rd, Simeone strands a runner at 2B to end the inning. 1-0 UNO. 58 pitches for Simeone.

Bottom 4th, Simeone in trouble with the bases loaded and two out. He gets out of it when Christian Fedko catches a line drive. 1-0 UNO. Simeone at 82 pitches. It would not surprise me if he comes out after this inning.
