UConn v. Tulsa — Game Thread

I really hate how the commentator (male) called the game after the starters came out. Like dude just call the freaking game. Also, I don’t know, but as a player especially are freshman I feel a disconnect when it comes to the core 6. You could see it all on the court and you can read it all in the media. One last thing Geno could’ve at least put Kia or Crystal to run point and let Coombs play her natural 2 guard position.

Knowing what's in store for them, Tulsa may be reluctant to leave the locker room for the second half

Excluding Stevens, the Bench shot 0-9 in the 2nd quarter. Megan went 4-4 from the Free Throw Line. Thus the only points the reserved scored. The bench tied Tulsa 16-16 in the 2nd quarter. Has to be disappointing for the Players and the Geno.

wait a second............doesn't the bench always lose the fourth quarter?

Nan, pray for me that I have the strength to follow your suggestions on what not to post.
It was a comment on human nature. Sometimes no matter what you do, there’s someone who’s unhappy with you.

I think the bench defense was a little worse than the offense. They need to keep working at it.
They didn't seem to have their arms up like the starters usually do and Geno didn't seem to be telling them to do that.

Instead of Molly at the point, put in Crystal and the reserves would have had a much easier time and would have scored more points. The reserves were trying to hard to take their individual shots instead of running offense. Napheesa and Stevens did the same thing. Lack of confidence in the reserves scoring abilities.

Molly had a golden opportunity to get an assist on a 2 on 1 breakaway, instead she wanted to take the shot herself and fumbled the ball. Would have had an easy assist.

Still they stayed even with Tulsa, it could have been worse.

Obviously the bench will look rusty at times, but IMO that’s the point of developing your bench, the more they play the more comfortable they will get, I only said give them more mins if/when the huskies are up by a lot of points. I’m not a coach but I always assumed in order to get better u need in game experience, if the huskies are leading by a considerable amount there’s no reason why the bench shouldn’t see some time to further give them experience.

Hey, haven’t seen you for a while. Welomce back

Thanks, I’ve lurked but I haven’t wanted to post just due to the board vibe. We have a lot of quarterback coaching going on and it makes it hard to join the conversation when there’s a bunch of infighting going on.

On a happier note, hope your Christmas was wonderful and here’s to a healthy New Year!!!

Well, just call me a broken record, but why put them all in at once? put in one or two so that they get the experience of playing with the best. If Geno just decides that the starters (200 minutes/6 "starters" = 33 minutes each) get instead 15-20 minutes each and the rest goes to benchers being rotated through with 2-3 starters, then the benchers get a real chance to play competitive ball. Of course, I didn't sleep in a Holiday Inn Express last night, so maybe Geno does know more than I.
I have a theory. I think Geno was aware of the buzz about his short bench coming from reporters and fans. He played the reserves all at once to put an end to all of the arm chair coaching.

Recording the game while my wife is on the phone with our daughter. Following it on ESPN gamecast. Z was a turnover machine, it seemed. Three offensive rebounds in a row for Tulsa before Walker grabbed one for UConn. Lots of missed opportunities. Pheesa coming back in seemed to settle things down a bit. Sounds like no one from the bench came close to distinguishing themselves. Disappointing, to say the least. Most of them destined to go to the end of the bench, it seems.

Maybe they'll improve with a few more games under their belts but I have feeling Geno's patience will run out before then.

It looks like six deep in March, sad to say.

so that's it for the season for those five.............?

I think the coach wants to see if they can make things happen when the game is within 30 points.

Hi Nan, nice to see you on this frosty evening...

Interesting game. I’d guess Huskies drop the hammer on Tulsa in Q3...

I would't say the bench was a failure. They played the quarter even. That's not too bad with 4 of 5 bench players. It's a process.

I know this is TMI- but I'm in the throes of severe depression and an eating disorder and have to listen to arm chair therapists so I know what it's like..lol. At least I can still laugh..

I am just hoping the nurses come to take them back to their rooms before the second half starts.

UConn rated #1 in first poll. Shocking.

That's a good theory Dude but I have a feeling that Geno knows no matter what he does the "Arm Chair Coaching" will go on :p

He has thrown the subs under the bus twice now this week, and the week isn't over yet. I think he's trying to motivate them.
