Top 3rd, with 1 out and 2 runners on base, an RBI single for Rutgers that puts runners on the corners, 4-2 UConn. After a strikeout by Sears for the 2nd out, a wild pitch brings in another run. 4-3 UConn. Inning ends on another strikeout.

Thought maybe it was just a west coast thing, but what is it with the umps this year, they really seem to be squeezing the strike zone.

Bottom 3rd, UConn offense with a scoreless inning, with a possible scoring threat diminished by a double play for the first 2 outs. 4-3 UConn.

Top 4th, after a leadoff infield single, Andrew Sears is coming out of the game. Tom Ellisen coming in to pitch.

We have openers this year. Pitching is going to be a team effort. It is what it is.

Bottom 4th, with 1 out, Daniels singles and steals 2B. He is stranded, 4-3 UConn.

I would give Quiggers a fresh inning here but going back to Ellisen would be understandable.

I suspect we will see Stephen Quigley at some point this weekend, perhaps after Ellisen comes out tonight.

Top 5th, after getting the first 2 outs, Ellisen leaves runners at the corners. 4-3 UConn.

Rutgers cosplaying as UConn with these 2 out rallies. Nice job to escape that one.

Bases loaded after 2 walks and a HBP. It’d be nice if we could take advantage of these gifts. No one out.

Bottom 5th, David Smith with a leadoff walk and another stolen base. UConn loads the bases with no outs, all on freebies. Pitching change, so UConn is into the bullpen. Studley sac fly makes it 5-3 UConn, putting runners on the corners with 1 out. Broadhurst follows with another sac fly, 6-3 UConn. Huskies score 2 runs without getting any hits that inning.

Cutting down on the strikeouts makes it much easier to take advantage of walks. Nice job by the offense today.

Bottom 6th, Hyde with a 1 out single, second time he has been on base today. Scoreless inning for the UConn offense, 6-3 UConn.

UConn crushes a couple balls but has bad luck on balls hit in play. Still 6-3 heading to the 7th. We have had competitive at bats all day.

Top 7th, Rutgers gets 2 runners in scoring position with 2 outs. A single brings in a run, the second runner is thrown out at the plate by Smith. 6-4 UConn. Play is being reviewed for possible interference by the catcher Hyde, but from the replay I saw, no question in my mind that the runner was out. And he is ruled out.

Great job/focus by Hyde!

Bottom 7th, UConn offense goes down in order, 6-4 UConn.

Chris Jones expects Will Nowak will be coming in to pitch, a good decision to bring in a new pitcher at this time in my mind. Nowak does come in to pitch.

By the way, Chris Jones has been commenting on the tight strike zone.
